NFL Draft: Browns Select Montario Hardesty

The Browns traded up into the second round to select Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty. Hardesty isn’t a pure speed back, but ran well at the combine. He rushed 560 times at Tennessee (2nd most in team history) for 2,391 yards and 26 touchdowns. He is a durability question, with multiple knee injuries.

The Browns gave up a third round pick (#71 overall) and two fifth round picks (#134 and 146 overall) to jump up 11 spots and select Hardesty. The move leaves the Browns with 4 picks. Numbers 92, 160, 177 and 186 overall. Interesting that the Browns entered the draft with 10 picks and suddenly they have only 5 left after getting Haden, Ward and now Hardesty.

Here’s a snippet from Rivals.com-

A tall, well-built back with a strong lower body and an aggressive running style when attacking the line of scrimmage, Hardesty does a nice job keeping his pad level down inside and is surprisingly slippery for a guy his size. He does a nice job setting up blocks, being patient inside and accelerating into daylight. He exhibits a good first step and gets up to speed quickly. He showcases the ability to make defenders miss in tight areas and can finish runs inside. Overall, he isn’t powerful or elusive when nothing is there, and he isn’t the kind of back who can consistently create on his own. But he’s effective when asked to run downhill and can wear down an opposing defense. He does a great job in the pass game and has the ability to be split out wide and can separate from defensive backs in the pass game. He’s a natural receiver who plucks the ball away from his body and is comfortable running routes and creating after the catch. Hardesty is also a very efficient pass protector who does a nice job dropping his pad level and remaining balanced when asked to mirror a linebacker off the edge. He’s had some health issues that need to be checked out, and his future durability is a concern

Wait…I thought we had three 3rd rounders. Did we give two of them up?

  • saggy

    Boooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

  • CP

TJ Ward and Montario Hardesty…..that was the 3rd round, right? No? Oh….

  • Big Show

Colt McCoy was still there I believe too, which is what makes this really weird to me. I checked another site whose review of this guy was that he would have a hard time having success at the next level, as he isn’t big enough to be a power back and doesn’t have a second gear. But, I shall breath deep for in Holmgren we trust.

    T.J. Was 2nd round. We still have 2 3rd rounders I believe…all is not lost….

  • saggy

    bruce campbell, welcome to cleveland…

  • Nototious C.H.A.C.E.

    COLT!!!!!! YEAHHH!!!

  • Team Wallace

good value pick. value-wise, it compensates for hardesty…

  • MattC

Hell yeah! Still a little unsure about Ward and hardesty, but Colt at 85 is a HUGE steal. This is great news. I have a great feeling about this kid.

  • tom

listening to him speak on the radio right now…sounds like a good kid.

The place McCoy was drafted is nice value but
other then that the second day wasn’t all that
impressive to me. McCoy can sit as third
stringer for a year maybe two while fans cry
and whine he should play. Oh great!

  • Christopher

Pre-ordering my McCoy Jersery right now!

  • Christopher

Oh man, all they have are Hardesty jerseys.

  • b

anyone know what the hell Everson Griffen did to piss off the entire league 3 rounds over?? he’s projected late 1st rounder early 2nd at worst

  • mike

hardesty is a steal. this guy is a stud.

  • Al Clarke

As a devote SEC Tennessee Volunteer fan, I’m gonna have to say that I am recording names of everyone that is doubting Hardesty’s future potential for the Browns. He will be a stud for the Browns or any team that would have selected him whether in the second round, where he more deserving belonged, or in the later rounds as a steal. Fact of the matter is when Hardesty got the full chance to show what he could do, he did just that…and continued in the combine while leading in some categories and being in the tops of RB in all others !! Now let’s dispel some of the other myths that most of the media people are reporting about his previous injuries, which is where most of the anti-2nd rd pick haters are getting your information from.

As a true freshman, he tore his ACL and was out for the rest of the season as the second string back behind ex Volunteer starter Gerald Riggs Jr. When Hardesty tore his ACL in his right knee, other backs like Lamarcus Coker (eventually kicked out for violating drug policies) and Arian Foster (now with Texans) got a chance to shine. Hardesty was fully recovered for the start of the following season in 2006, despite a less serious left knee injury that occurred during spring practice and required minor surgery. In fact, Hardesty had a highlight play in the first game of the 2006 season breaking 6 or 7 tackles for a TD against Cal. By this time though, Coach Fulmer preferred Foster and Coker over Hardesty and he got less carries. Hardesty didn’t sulk about it though. He just worked harder and focused and stayed out of trouble until he was needed and called upon. Hardesty later had water drained from one of his knees, which people and reporters are calling a third surgery and other minor nagging injuries that any football player would get. It was never a really of question of his injuries although that was the reason given to reporters b/c he was a highly touted back coming about of high school and wasn’t getting carries like he should have. When Coach Fulmer resigned and Foster graduated, Hardesty had a clean slate again to make his impressions felt. One of the criticisms of those last years in the Fulmer era was Fulmer played favoritism and seniority over the best player for the position and was reported that he ‘criminally’ under-utilized Hardesty. Kiffin could see the truth of Hardesty even though his original reports on his injuries made Kiffin think it was more serious when he first got to Tennessee. Kiffin shouldered the offense on Hardesty most times during the past season b/c he knew he could handle it. Because Hardesty is as focused and disciplined as he is, he was ready when the call came.

Now that’s the RB that the Browns traded up for. If you match his personality, hard work and positive attitude, with his skill set, the Browns have one heluva RB that will be a future Hall of Famer!

    Enough said!

    Re: Al Clarke,

Thanks for the insight. I didn’t mean to doubt the dude, his stats are solid. Simply didn’t know if was the Brown’s biggest need at the time. If he turns out solid, then like usual I will look stupid when it comes on who to draft :D . I hope that is the case.

Take care, and thanks again for the insight. For the record, I am still glad we got Colt, even if he doesn’t pan out, we needed to take a QB and see what he can do I think.

For those who are in doubt, check the combine stats.Coach Holmgren
traded for Brett whom few people knew.Besides that fact,he knows the type of work ethic, dedication and professionalism he’s getting
in this young man thruogh a previous “Tenured” player “GK53″ from the same small hometown.Coincidence? OH MAN!

  • http://www.heyhokie.com Vengeful Pat

I saw Tennessee’s bowl game against Virginia Tech. As a running back, Hardesty didn’t look like anything special. He could never get himself going and averaged about 2 yards per carry. He did have 4 catches for 79 yards and seems to be good at receiving the ball in space. Maybe he can be a third down back.

  • Al Clarke

Seems like Hardesty is still on the path to greatness! Can’t wait for training camp and preseason. I’m sure the dissenters would have jumped their ships and come aboard mines by then.

    lol@denny….I must admit…pretty funny!

@Vengeful Pat…Vols had one of the worst OL in the SEC, and most other conferences for that matter, with two walk-ons in starting positions. Even with that, the Vols were still able to pull off a 7-6 season and bowl game…much of which is to Hardesty’s contribution. So when you watch just the bowl game when the OL had completely flattened out by then, it isn’t exactly a representation of the plays that Hardesty has had all season in the SEC. By the way, I’m willing to bet Hardesty will do better than just being a third down back! lol
