April 26, 2010Angels 5 Indians 2: More of the Same

Had LeBron James done what he did Monday night in the fourth quarter to Chicago in an Eastern Conference Finals, it would have probably ranked as one of his best playoff performances without any hesitation. As it was, it came in a first round game against a .500 team that had no business even being in the game.
So it gets downplayed a bit – as much as a 40-8-8 “If I don’t do this we’re going to lose homecourt advantage to a team that has one reliable scoring option and needed 82 games to get into the playoffs in the East” can get downplayed.” [Dan Labbe/Cavs Corner]

Bad mix: Psychologists and a soapbox… “Native American mascots and logos have long been the subject of much debate. Should schools and teams get rid of them? Are they racist? Does it really matter? Should a bunch of middle-aged white people get to make those decisions? What does it really hurt?
What you should be asking is: How does Chief Wahoo effect my view of Polish people? Can one seemingly innocent logo representing Native Americans actively change my perception of the Irish? Yes, yes it can apparently.” [Chief Grzegorek/64 and Counting]

Develop the kids! “Given the situation of the 2010 Indians – not competitive – an emphasis should obviously be placed on player development. How do we get guys like LaPorta, Santana, Masterson, Rondon et al. to turn into the best players they can be? But decisions about player development still need to be made in the larger context of organizational assets and roster utilization.” [Lets Go Tribe]

And finally, spring football! “A spring game is a lot of things. It’s a chance for the staff to see personnel at various spots in a game-like situation, it serves as a player reward for 14 grueling practice sessions and it’s a chance for the fans to come out and get a sneak peak at the team for next to nothing, among other things. One thing a spring game is not, however, is a starting lineup blueprint for the opener. While we’re able to infer most of what the two-deep will look like in September, there are still some battles to be waged for playing time. Here are a few to keep in mind before the Buckeyes pick things back up again in August.” [Jason/Eleven Warriors]

40-8-8? wow.
That reminds me: did anyone see that Dick Vitale interview with Mike and Mike? I never watch the guys but just happened to turn and see LeBron’s name on the screen. Vitale said “I never say this but…” and then went on to talk about how LeBron James is going to be the best there ever was. (The next Roy Hobbs!)
That “racism” study had 79 students TOTAL chopped into three groups. I’m not saying it’s conclusions aren’t valid because of an extremely small sample size but, wait, yes I am.
@ 5K – Where did you find the actual numbers at? I found the abstract, but it didn’t list anything but vague assertions about their research.
do we really need a survey to tell us that wahoo is tasteless and outdated? i think we should stick with the C cap.
I dont’ see how it is tasteless. I Wahoo hat is 100x better than the plain old C or I
I’m sick of hearing the wahoo argument….I’m irish and I could care less a cartoon representation of my lineage is used to sell t-shirts and jersey’s. I get the argument being made I just disagree with it and I always will. If all of a sudden the Nashville Honky’s or crackers pop up as a professional team, I won’t be throwing my hands up in disgust.
Chris, it’s listed in the 64 & Counting article:
“In the first study, conducted on the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana campus, 79 students selected at random filled out a 25-item “Scale of Anti-Asian American Stereotypes.” Participants rated on a one-to-five scale whether they agreed with such statements as “Asian Americans are motivated to obtain too much power in our society.”
For one-third of the survey takers, the questionnaire was pulled out of a folder decorated with stickers depicting Chief Illiniwek. For another third, the folder was festooned with the capital letter “I,” the alternate logo of U of I athletics. For the final third, the folder was blank.
The results: Those exposed to the image of the mascot, however peripherally, endorsed anti-Asian American stereotypes to a greater extent than those in the other two groups.”
