Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge Under League Review

The video above is Cavaliers power forward JJ Hickson shooting a pair of free throws in Monday night’s Game Two against the Boston Celtics.  If you pay close attention to the seats just right of the stanchion, you will see Boston general manager Danny Ainge attempting to distract the shooting Hickson.

During the second attempt, Ainge managed to get his hands on a towel and proceeded to toss it into the air.  Per the Associated Press, this action is under league review.

“That was interesting to see that happen during the flow of the game, from Danny Ainge,” Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown said. “If it’s within the rules, hey, at this time, you do whatever you can to win. As long as it’s within the rules.”

And given the league review, there is a chance that these actions may actually not be within said rules.  Ainge has long been considered a fiery competitor, but his actions on Monday may have some ramifications.  More on this as it develops.

    Much ado about nothing. The NBA will tell him to cut it out and we will all forget about it while sobbing about LeBrons elbow. What a crappy day its been.

    I really don’t see how this is any different from what Cavs fans do during opposing teams’ free throws, aside from the fact that fans are not employed as league GMs. There are team employees that bang the noise makers and stuff as well. If this had taken place in Boston, or had it been Danny Ferry doing the towel-tossing in Cleveland, nobody would have noticed. Since he was the only one trying to distract JJ on JJ’s home court, it was noticable.

    I’ll be quite surprised if this becomes a thing. He didn’t throw anything onto the court, unlike beer-tossing bro.

    Wow, how weak is this? lol. Who cares. It’s part of the game, or should be at least. We’re getting so soft in our professional sports on all the wrong things.

    Nothing will happen, but it’s pretty bush league and classless for a member of another teams front office to react that way. Cuban is really the only owner who screams and all of that, but it’s mostly at the refs and he does it in a different manner.

    Danny Ainge, what a douche. If I sat around him and saw that I woulda jacked that towel or yelled obscenities at him.

    I mean seriously, who throws a towel?

    Hope someone throws a shoe or a battery at him at game 5

    But with a 23-point lead for his side, how desperate was he?

    I say, fear the Cavs in Beantown. I can’t see them lying down for a second game straight. Those two games promise to be some of the most exciting ones we have seen in the LeBron era.

    someone needs to “spill” a beer on him during game 5…or a handful of peanut shells and skins would coat him nicely. Hes the same prick he was when he was a player, just older, and slower. He’s a horrible GM too. Without Kevin McHale giving him Garnett for 30 cents on a dollar, where would that team be? No title in ’08. Probably never past the second round. What a douche

    FWIW, Bulls bench players were throwing towels in the air on occassion in the first round. Not sure where the league would draw the line.

    Danny Ainge could drop his drawers and I could not care less. What I do care about is whether or not the Cavaliers will step their game up and play to the level they are capable of and winning games.

    I dont mind it at all. I love seeing owners and GMs getting fired up at the games. MJ pointing to the bench when Howard fouled out is another great example. If I were rich enough to own a team I know I would be at the bench yelling and getting fired up as well.

    It may be funny, but I bet it’s also fine-y – as in going to cost him money.

    His seat placement was a benefit of his office. And his act is noteworthy because of his seat placement.

    I doubt Stern’s going to take kindly to it.

    Nothing will happen publicly, but the league will absolutely tell him to knock that stuff off. Why? Because NBA team executives aren’t the same as fans. Fans are supposed to make noise and create distractions (within reason), but executives in the public eye are tied directly to the NBA’s image. A team GM should not be doing that.

    Personally? I think it was a bush-league move by a guy who can’t let go of his days as a player, and he comes across as petty and pathetic. Which is fine by me since he represents Boston.

    Kinda funny he is trying to make the worst free throw team in the nba even worse and when they are up 23. Nice.

    Stanchion = the base supporting the shootyhoop. The seats just to the right are, well, just to the right. BASED ON THE CAMERA’S FRAME OF REFERENCE.
