“Poor Cleveland. The Browns should be better this season, but they almost surely won’t good enough to catch the rest of the pack. I’m not talking about the AFC. I’m talking about the AFC North, where Cleveland finished last the past two seasons and looks like a hat trick waiting to happen. That could change, but the Browns would have to play nearly flawless football — with opponents making the mistakes — for them to close on the field.
The good news: They’re better, Cleveland fans. This football team is an improvement on the club that won its final four games a year ago when coach Eric Mangini fought to lay a foundation.” [Clark Judge/CBS Sports]

A hilarious exclusive interview with the two Chris Perezes: “If I throw it at the batter and he has time to move out of the way, it isn’t fast enough.” [CastroTurf]

Breaking down the best centers in the NBA, with a lot of Zydrunas Ilguaskas defense: “It’s possible that no NBA big man is as comfortable hanging with the screen-and-roll as Anderson Varejao. And though the Cleveland big man still has a pretty awful offensive game despite the occasional catch and finish, his ability to help his guards and slink back to cover his opponent makes him a very passable starting pivot (though you would still prefer the luxury of having him come off the bench).” [Kelly Dwyer/BDL]

Remember when Andre Rison called himself the greatest wide receiver of all time? Well, about a year later, he has landed a gig coaching high school football. [SportsbyBrooks]

And finally, a real American winning machine: “And finally, Nothing gives you more joy than the collective misery of Ohio State fans following a loss. When you watch Ohio State, you want them to wreck, not piss excellence. But you know, and I know, and you know that I know one thing: Ohio State does piss excellence, week in and week out. More frequently than an alcoholic diabetic. But you live for that car wreck, don’t you? Because for one, maybe two Saturdays a year, you get to text your Ohio State buddies and say ‘U SUX LOLZ!!!’ But we don’t do that to you, because most of us can’t afford all the texts we would have to send, week in and week out, to reinforce what we both already know: Your team really does suck, and never will piss excellence like Ohio State does.” [Off-Tackle Empire]

Poor Clark Judge, he almost surely “won’t good” enough to write for ESPN.
Scott is up with the roosters this morning! I like it!
May I suggest a piece contemplating why none of our offensive linemen took offense when N. Suh ragged-dolled our QB? You can’t just let somebody do that to your guy — especially not a rookie — and just ignore it. I wonder what Doug Dieken thought about that?
MrCleve-
I completely agree. I expected a chop block or two from one of our lineman.
I come from the mindset of hitting the QB as much and as hard as possible. Remove the head. But, not in preseason. I like seeing defenses take a 15 yard penalty to get a good shot on the opposing QB, because if you can get the backup in the game. That 15 yards is worth it. But you can’t risk seriously injuring somebody in a preseason game…
I don’t know about catching the Ravens but the Steelers and the Bengals are definite possibilities for the Browns to catch. The Steelers have their star quarterback on the shelf for the first six games and the Bengals are always on the verge of self-combustion.
JK – I’m glad you caught that as well. Was too good to edit out.
Is this a running joke to include Z in nearly all these photos? Please fill me in… way too much to be a coincidence. Does KD like or dislike/disrespect Z?
DocZeus- I think the Bengals are better than the Ravens, who are both worlds apart from us. The Steelers are also better than us, but I think we’re within striking distance of them.
Bengals D is much better than everybody thinks, and they have one of the best offenses in the league. They just cut Antonio Bryant, who would be a #1 on our team. Benson is a real solid back, and their OL is getting better. Ravens are old, Donte is hurt, Mason is a billion years old and Ray Ray is over the hill as well.
@ Mr. Cleaveland – Amen, brother. I was disappointed that every player on the field wasn’t in Suh’s face after that BS. Maybe they didn’t see the last part where he twisted Jake’s head and slammed him to the ground, but everyone knew about the facemask since it was called.
Regular season I might look at it a little differently…but the preseason is all about getting in game shape and not getting people hurt. Apparently the rookie doesn’t understand that…
@ Kirk…That is pretty funny about Z appearing in nearly every picture. My favorite part is the fact that in the David Lee pic, the Cavs are winning the game vs. the Knicks by 20 in the 4th quarter. Oh how I’ll miss those days this winter.
It’ll be Bengals-Ravens for the top spot in the division this year, and both are significantly more talented than the Browns CURRENTLY. However, both are also living on borrowed time–the Ravens D is not exactly young, and the Bengals are putting faith in several guys who haven’t exactly been the most reliable (Palmer, Chad Johnson, TO, Benson). We aren’t nearly as far back of the yinzers overall, but they still have more total talent. And anyone who actually thinks Roethlisberger will actually miss six games has obviously not been paying attention to how the NFL treats the Steelers; he’ll be back just in time to play the Browns. In Pittsburgh. Off a bye week.
We don’t have to roll 6-0 through the North each season to become a legit squad again, but we do have to be much more competitive. I would love to see us split all three division series this season, but I’m thinking 1-1 against Cincy, 1-1 against Pitt, and 0-2 against Bmore is more likely.
