What makes the owner of a sports franchise “good?”: “If winning championships is the only criteria, then every Cleveland owner since 1964 has failed. But is that fair? George Steinbrenner was hailed as a great owner by Yankee apologists because he was willing to do “whatever it took” to win. That overlooks the fact that in 2009 the Yankees had $441 million in revenue – $173 million more than the second-place team! Having that much of an advantage makes it a lot easier to do “whatever it takes.” [Red Right 88]

Oof. According to Madden 11, Jerome Harrison will only rush for 737 yards with two touchdowns while the Browns go 4-12. [ESPN AFC North Blog]

Sure, Hafner hit the salami, but… “If not for two outstanding plays by Matt LaPorta in the sixth, the Mariners would have been the team to break the game open. With the bases loaded and one out, Ichiro hit a line drive over first base, and LaPorta dove, catching the ball in foul territory. Chone Figgins then tried a surprise two-out bunt, but LaPorta fielded the ball and nicked Figgins’ jersey with his glove to end the inning. LaPorta hasn’t played much at first in his professional career, but his hands and instincts around the base have been impressive for someone learning the position.” [Let’s Go Tribe]

Ted Ginn Jr cracks the top five Buckeyes of the decade: “Over the course of his career, Ginn went from a special teams phenom as a freshman to one of the best game breaking wide receivers in the country. He led the team in receiving in 2006 on the most prolific Ohio State offense of the decade.” [The Buckeye Battlecry]

Didn’t Ginn start out as a DB?
@ Mr C: Yup, Ginn was a DB prospect coming out of HS. He played QB at Glenville. Gonzo was a DB as well. Gamble was a converted WR who played both ways for a few years. OSU be good at switchin’ WRs and DBs around.
laporta has been a nice defensive surprise at 1st. we need a 2nd base glove. not sure donald has it.
If anything BESIDES the simulation of Madden ’11 is correct, Browns running backs will combine for 10,000 yards and at least 100 TDs. HB stretch to the left, guaranteed 20 yards every play. It’s fantastic.
SlawDiesel – call Daboll and let him know that, stat.
Giving the yankees management credit for anything is like giving the steelers organiztion credit for being classy. Both happen all the time in the media for no documented reason whatsoever.
@6 – have to give the Yankees FO some credit, just not a lot. Look at the Mets and Cubs for examples of how to spend a ton of $$$ and still be a terrible baseball team.
I see too many of these “predictions” by computers and reporters. What I’d really like to see is someone going back and looking to see who’s right and who’s wrong at the end of the season.
I think TMQ is the only one who looks back at preseason predictions.
