Browns Lack of Pass-Rush is Alarming
September 3, 2010Talking Browns and Final Cuts
September 3, 2010ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Cleveland RB and 2nd round draft pick Monterio Hardesty has a torn ACL which will keep him out for the entire season–
Hardesty, the Browns’ second-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft, will miss the entire regular season after an MRI on Friday revealed the extent of the injury to his left knee, according to the source. The Browns’ preseason finale was Hardesty’s debut after he suffered a bone bruise in his right knee at the start of training camp.
More on what this means for the Browns later.

FUDGE
Was affraid of the kid’s durability from the start. He’s got the talent and skills, but those knees of his are already going through 4 major injuries I believe.
I just threw up in my mouth
this pisses me off. all lsat year i’ve been reading grossi imply the browns dont think harrison is durable enough to be a feature back. and then they effing TRADE UP to get a guy with two knee surgeries. RUFKM?
question #1: has a college running back who had surgery on both knees ever been drafted in the 2nd round or higher?
question #2: has a running back who had surgery on both knees ever gone on to have a successful career as a ‘featured’ RB?
question #3: we knew about the acl, but i didn’t know his other knee had been scoped. was i asleep or was it not reported?
this really sucks. especially when a starting right guard (ducasse) was taken two slots after him.
@4 – Carnell Williams.
He’s had success in the nfl but he’s still working his way back and he beat out a pretty good Derrick Ward for the starters job last year and looked pretty good. Outside of that I’m drawing a blank.
jk- can’t answer the first two off the top of my head, but the scope was reported earlier during camp. The Browns found a RG in Lauvao, so that shouldn’t upset you too much. What is upsetting is it cost them a 3rd and 2 5ths to move up and get Hardesty with these injury concerns.
Jamal Lewis had 2 torn ACLs, and he has a game against the browns to show he was a feature back.
Im not too upset by this though. I feel for the kid, but at the same time this is where our dpeth is. Hillis and Harrison will get the bulk and we also get to see more of of Davis can do. Im excited about that group and if Hardesty makes his way back then thats even better (for 2011 that is).
RE: Williams – his injuries weren’t in college but far more severe (torn patellar).
@7…Agreed, the only bright spot in this is that James Davis will get an opportunity to show what he can do this year….
Still, I was really excited to see Hardesty this year.
After he scored the TD I was screaming at Mangini to take him out…Man, this just ruined my day….
Willis McGahee’s knee virtually exploded in that championship game against OSU, and he still had some pretty solid years as a feature guy.
This isn’t the end of the world, but definitely a blow.
Having flashbacks of James Davis being hyped all last summer before going down for the season.
Lewis- 2 torn and then repaired… just to clarify if theres confusion.
Well that sucks…
I knew we shouldn’t have drafted this guy. What a waste of a draft pick…
And so it begins…before it even is official…
Why do I have visions of James Davis sneaking out of the clubhouse a la Willie Mays Hayes and then doing a little dance in the parking lot?
@jimkanicki,
You ask several poignant questions, however, Ducasse barely looks like a suitable RG. I’ve been watching HBO Hard Knocks and Ducasse has been getting beat horribly, leaving Sanchez open for some serious beatings.
This one hurts b/c it wasn’t just ONE pick – we traded up to get this kid.
This just sucks. Well, the kids knows adversity as he’s been through it before. Let’s see him in camp next year and hope for the best.
I’m reaching here…
I agree with bobby.
This sucks a lot for Hardesty and I feel for him having to miss his entire rookie season on a 2-yard run but at the same time I think we’re fine at RB with what we have. Hillis has really brought some more dynamics to the offense and we get to see James Davis and what he can do.
Get well soon MH.
[…] Chris Jennings. Unless that knee of Hardesty’s puts him on IR or the PUP list. He would be another practice squad candidate if he made it through […]
Holy …
His future now has more red flags than a May Day parade. Reminiscent of Lawyer Tillman, gifted receiver from Auburn circa 1989. Very tall (for receivers back then) and had impact player written all over him. Believe Accorsi traded a future first rounder to take him at the top of the 2nd round, idea being that he and Metcalf would help a slow team go vertical. But Tillman’s legs were awful, one major injury after another, lost his speed and leap. They tried to convert him to tight end to salvage something, disaster. Great talent and skills, but his body was a ticking time bomb.
From now on, the Browns should understand that when they draft a running back, he won’t play until the next year. Once they accept that, they’ll be able to plan around it.
Wonderful, so when he comes back, he’ll be slower, rustier, and even more prone to injury. Not to mention, ACL injuries generally take 2 years to really recover from, so we’re looking at 2012. That is, of course, if he even stays healthy next year.
He probably would’ve been available in the 3rd or 4th round anyways. Too bad.
How many people are we allowed to keep on IR?
we should probably cut colt mccooy too. they were drafted in the same round, so it’s only logical.
@23 – I think the Browns did understand this. Which is why we drafted a RB and traded for a RB in the offseason. Our depth is stacked there.
@24 – with the looming lockout, Hardesty has a good chance at staying healthy in ’11. Beyond that, it doesn’t look so good.
My head kinda exploded when they traded-up for this guy. I hadn’t heard of him AND it was a guy with knee issues?!? It just doesn’t make any sense to take gambles so high when the team had so many holes to fill. Oh well. James Davis will get his chance after all, which could turn-out to be a good thing for Browns fans.
Hey… I’m trying to stay optimistic here!!!
Horace what age do you live in?
Welker ruptured his ACL in the playoffs and is back this preseason. ACL injuries are no where close to 2 seasons anymore. Hardesty should be back and ready by training camp next year… pending lockouts.
@Bobby:
Terrible example picking Welker, b/c he might start the season on the PUP list. These are his comments from YESTERDAY about playing in week 1:
“I still feel like I’m a long ways off from that (playing in week 1) personally,” said Welker. “People say it looks the same. I don’t feel the same. So I’m not gonna put a number on myself.”
ACL injuries are still 2 year ordeals even if a player can physically play a year later. Check your facts.

my central point is this: RB was not an area of need. we like led the league rushing in the last four games. (1st, 2nd, 3rd.. whatever.. we were good in that department and good in spite of defenses loading the box against us since that didnt have to worry about our passing.)
the undertones about harrison being too small to hold up as a feature back are what led to giving up three picks to move ~12 slots. and then we pick a guy with two knee surgeries to be our feature back because our emerging back who led the league when he started couldnt be a feature back? again.. RUFKM?
and ben, i dont know where you’re coming from with the mccoy jazz. if youve got something to say, say it.
Jim, I’m with you. I just felt like a smarty pants because I knew about Ducasse and actually had something besides conjecture to contribute for once.
The sky is not falling.
its a disappointment yes, but we have plenty of depth at running back.
Relax people.
Kellen had a knee surgery in his rookie season after Butch Davis was playing him on special teams… I would say even with Kellen’s injuries he’s had a pretty impactful career as a pass-catching Tight End.
Horace- He’ll still be back within a year even if he starts on the PUP. he got hurt in the playoffs. Its no where close to 2 years. 6 months until he’ll be able to start sport specific training, maybe 9 until he’s back to 95-98%. Now if the staph infections come back in Berea then it could be longer, but he will be able to start next year.
Sorry, last game of the reg. season he when he got hurt. And the article you point to, he STILL says theres not way hes goin on the PUP or sitting out.
