September 4, 2010Browns final cut list finally announced
September 4, 2010Coming off a season with the Browns where he threw for three touchdowns, was picked off ten times, and tallied a year-end passer rating of 42.1, why shouldn’t Derek Anderson be the week one starter for the Cards? He has a cannon for an arm you know.
But more than any physical things Derek Anderson brings to the field, it appears he will be Arizona’s starter when they open up next week in St. Louis because he is not as awful as the other guy.
That other guy – ‘the can’t miss winner from USC with all the intangibles and who can make all the throws’ – was cut today by Arizona to make way for DA.
This per the Associated Press:
“The Arizona Cardinals have released quarterback Matt Leinart, ending a rocky stint with the team that began with fanfare as he was drafted 10th overall in 2006 and ended this preseason with the former USC star taking a backseat to Derek Anderson.
The team announced the decision to release the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Saturday.
Leinart played in 29 games with 17 starts for Arizona, and threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
Have fun with this Cardinals fans.
My prediction is by week three you’ll be begging Wisenhunt to go Brad Childress and try to convince Warner to come back for week four. Just hope Kurt doesn’t hurt himself in the meantime on that dancing show.

For this preseason, the numbers posted by Anderson and Leinart were as follows:
Game 1 – Houston:
DA: 13/22 for 88 yards. 1 TD, 2 INTs. Passer Rating of 45.3.
Leinart: 6/7 for 49 yards. 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 95.8.
Game 2 – Titans:
DA: 11/19 for 105 yards. 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 73.4.
Leinart: 4/6 for 28 yards. 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 77.1.
Game 3 – Bears:
DA: 7 of 12 for 94 yards. 1 TD, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 111.1.
Leinart: 9 of 10 for 84 yards. 1 TD, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 135.0.
Game 4 – Redskins:
DA: 2 of 3 for 47 yards. 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 109.7.
Leinart: 3 of 5 for 14 yards. 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Passer Rating of 64.6.
Kidding aside, best of luck to DA though. He did beat out a guy in Leinart who was drafted 10th overall, and given every opportunity to succeed. It’ll be his show this season as a result, and he’ll be manning the controls for as long as the Cardinals think they need to ready their next QB of the future, Max Hall.

I really cant say im going to pull for DA, however i wouldnt be surprised if he has a record setting year. I guess that’s the cleveland sports fan in me…
Derek Anderson and his complete lack of talent somehow ruins another team.
DA is like Lane Kiffin. He’s never done anything, but he keeps getting work.
Love that comment, DA is Lane Kiffin LOL.
Anderson is one of the worst QB’s Ive never seen. Id rather have Jamarcus Russell than Derek Anderson. Well, maybe I shouldnt go that far, but DA is really bad. Leinart is no stud, hes been a big disappointment, but he can at least complete 50 percent of his passes. I get the feeling Whisenhunt never liked the guy and was just itching for a reason to cut him. I guess he was able to convince ownership that DA was somehow a better choice, good luck with that! Looks like the Cardinals are officially back to being a bottom feeder.
Whisenhunt has quoted that (undrafted rookie) Max Hall was his best quarterback in camp, so it’s very possible DA is on a short leash.
Kidding aside, the Cardinals need to just run the ball 50 times a game and let DA throw 13 passes deep to Fitzgerald every night. If he completes 5 of them for 150 or so, it’s a good day.
Forgive Ken Wisenhunt and the Cardinals front office, Lord…for they know not what they are doing.
When I heard that DA was going to be the starter in Arizona, I stayed a mile away form Larry Fitzgerald in both my fantasy drafts.
Man…how bad is Matt Leinhart?
@ Ben – DA is like Lane Kiffin…quality line. Good stuff.
Cardinals fans . . . may God have mercy on your souls.
I think that’s the key. Leinart makes Brady Quinn blush with the number of checkdowns he goes to.
hahahahahaha.
over/under on how many starts DA gets this season? Even w/o knowing what qb(s) the Cards pick up this weekend, I say: 4
I tell what kind of quarterback he’ll be by how many checkdowns he does. Quinn, Leinart, ect, can go 9-14 for… 40 yards. The rookies who they let play football, Flacco, Ryan, Stafford, they use their arm.
Checkdown quarterbacks have no place in the league. I wouldn’t be shocked for DA has a decent season. Not on my fantasy team however.
When DA had a primary WR that could catch, he lit up here – in Cleveland. Give him some good surroundings in AZ and some of you may be eating your words here.
My theory is that DA is like the bad boyfriend to the NFL coach.
The coaches are all like “hey look at that guy’s arm! I like that.” …and DA’s all like “Sup.” …and the coaches are all like “I bet I’m a strong enough coach to turn you around and make you better.” …but then their relationship gets into trouble when DA doesn’t care enough again for the 4 or 5th time or throws his 8th pick when he could have just been paying attention to the coach’s needs and got the first down, but NOOOOOO DA doesn’t listen to ME! YOU JUST GO ON AND DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. OK! I DO SO MUCH FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU GIVE ME? HUH!? HUH!? NOTHING! THAT’S WHAT!!
Oh. Sorry.
#12: That was great!!!
Well.
I’ll drop my standard line here: DA was good when noone had film on him.
when opponents had 8 games worth of film, his stats in Cleveland did a 180 degree turn.
this will not change in AZ. He’ll still have issues with short pass touch/velocity, will lock onto a reciever, and will make his receiving corps have to do the “circus” catch (a la BE & KW2). This may get Larry F. a nice new broken rib.
Opponents will sell out to stop the run, and make DA beat them with short throws by playing a deep coverage.
He’d make a good back up, the Steelers should grab him.
He’ll play 15 seasons and make millions!
