Buckeyes Crushed in Madison, Now What?
October 17, 2010McCoy Plays Well In Loss to Steelers
October 17, 2010The 1-4 Cleveland Browns travel to Heinz Field for their first matchup with the 3-1 rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger returns after a four game suspension for off the field indiscretion and misdeeds. NFL Network reporter Kara Henderson who is live from Heinz Field, just reported, “I dare say, there has not been an ounce of negative energy towards him in this Stadium today.” Here’s hoping TJ Ward or Marcus Benard can provide that kind of energy this afternoon. Colt McCoy will also be making his first start in the NFL. It should be an extremely conservative game plan against the excellent Steelers defense. The Browns come into the game looking to start a win streak against the Steelers, after their 2010 season highlight victory at home over Pittsburgh in December last season. Join us in the comments as we welcome Colt McCoy to the NFL.

@49 – you maybe right about Cribbs, but unless I misunderstand the rule (very possible) I had thought it was leading with your helmet that was illegal. That fit the bill for me. Very tue tho, absolute BS on the lack of a call on Mass getting laid out while prone.
QB controversy brewing? Sure he is scrambling sometimes, but McCoy is looking better then the guys we had the past 3 years before Wallace and Jake.
Colt looks ok. I’m pleased. Hodges has been awsome.
Can anyone tell me what our receivers are doing downfield when Colt has all kinds of time to throw the pocket holds and no one is getting open at all?
Ok… someone extend Reggie Hodges contract, now.
Almost a Safety, of course our secondary gives up the big play. I thought we improved there ? Oh wait, Elam was covering over the top, of course.
Eric Wright is officially dead to me
im so sick of watching our 2ndary
about as predictable as you get with a Rob Ryan D 3rd and goal and Eric Wright not making a tackle.
Ben is tough, man.
And I have an idea of what TJ can work on this off-season.
Ok, no blow out. Let’s show some grit. Dial up those screens, Daboll, cuz here come the blitzin.
Wright. Tackle not try and strip the ball? Dummy.
Horrible play by Wright again. 3rd and goal, just keep him out of the end zone.
The second we rushed eight everyone in Cleveland knew the Steelers were scoring. How is it we know the limitations of our defenses better than the coaches. It’s third down all you need is to get a stop so they can kick a fg. You don’t need a sack. Just drop into coverage. What is Ryan thinking there?
To think Wright was our top CB last year. I thought we had 3 starters in Haden Wright and Brown. Turns out we have 1 in Haden. Brown cant cover down field and Wright cant cover at all.
So the perfect draft this coming year, another Corner and another Safety anyone ?
I think the Helmet-to-Helmet is regardless of whether the player is defenseless or not. Should have been called twice on Harrison.
The second shold have resulted in an ejection.
If our D could step up and force a 3 and out we might get in it. doubt that happens.
I wish somebody would lay ouy Rape-lisburger.
No we need to draft a receiver who is a legitimate threat. Our defense has played solid almost every game. If we had any passing offense we could win. We have been in every single game we’ve played in the fourth quarter but we cant muster up any scoring. We all know we’re not gonna rush our way to victory against the Steelers.
i think we need a wr and a safety for sure. although it just depends who is available
This D is bend but dont break. Dominant defense will get you over the top faster then a great O. Getting a legitimate pass rusher, like Clay Matthews, should be the top priority. then another CB somewhere and a FS at some point.
I don’t understand why Sheldon Brown is trying to stay with the smaller, quicker, Randel-El while Eric Wright is getting run over by Hines Ward. It seems like we always have the wrong matchup.
Uh, we need a lot of things. WR, safety, RT, several LBs, another WR, maybe a QB, more DL, the list goes on.
Watson should’ve layed out for that. Looked like he gave up on him. I thought it was a nice throw.
Haha. We do have a non existent pass rush…watching our offense is just so painful.
im not sure how much more i can watch
@75….just be happy you’ve been able to make it this far….
The fact that our pathetic receiving corps lost its #1 and #2 options and we were still in it until a muffed punt in the 4th quarter is more than I was hoping for a few hours ago..
I’m not as pissed as usual vs the Steelers. Considering the injuries going into the game, the (non flagged) head-to-head devastations, etc. Either Pittsburgh is overrated or Cleveland is underrated.
TD McCoy to Watson. Just let McCoy play at this point.
Colt has definitely not been as bad as most anticipated based on his preseason play….that being said, I’m not ordering my #12 jersey yet….maybe next week haha
Norv Turner for OC…he could be available as soon as next weekend
its definitely not mccoys fault
Im impressed with Colt. granted, its garbage time for steelers, I like how McCoy has handled himself. He deserves a start next week.
gotta kick a FG as soon as we get in range
I can’t say I’m disappointed with McCoy. He’s done pretty well considering he has little in the offensive weapons department. He’s moved around in the pocket and has played pretty tough against a good Pittsburgh D.
vegas is now happy they made sure to cover the spread
Don’t know if you can even fault the D for the last two TDs….we gave them the ball inside the 20 on each drive
Ben pointing to heaven after a touchdown is the height of hypocrisy.
overall though, this team is heading in the right direction. It would have been nice to win obviously, but im not entirely displeased with the effort today.
what we need is a litany of draft picks next year like New England has…anyone know offhand what we do have for draft picks next year?
@historycat, I don’t know so much about hypocrisy as maybe a total lack of understanding of spiritual morals. But that’s just me. Though, I doubt he’s the only professional athlete to thank God on game days and have problems keeping his winkie in his pants on off days.
@87: I was about to say the same thing. Rough game fo sho, but I’m not soul-crushed like I was after Buffalo last year (or any game of its ilk).
As for Colt, it’s hard to get a read on the overall numbers because a lot of good things happened in garbage time. The TD play to Watson, however, reminded me of what Roethlisberger ALWAYS does to us; move out of the pocket and keep the play alive, and find an open guy for a TD.
All of that said, the one thing I keep coming back to is what my expectations were combined with how many other QBs have played in that stadium and gotten worked over. Colt wasn’t great by any stretch, but he wasn’t horrible and he made some solid throws. Both of those picks could easily have been INCs (and even a catch on the first), and he did what he did with no running game to speak of and no real receiving threat other than maybe Watson or Moore.
If they give him the start next week and he doesn’t implode, then comes the bye week followed by two home games. I don’t see why he can’t keep going. Not like he’s costing us a playoff spot.
I’m usually livid after a loss to Pittsburgh, but given the circumstances, I have to say I’m not that upset. Well, I’m upset with some of the things that happened in the game that affected the possible outcomes… but nothing you can do about that.
I’m saying just start McCoy for the rest of the season based-on what happened today. Delhomme and Wallace aren’t the future and the Browns aren’t going anywhere, so let’s see what the rookie can do.
@90 Im not sure that was garbage time? They were up by 18 yes, but Im not sure starters come out even then? Can anyone confirm if 1st team or 2nd team was in for Pittsburg?
I like Colt’s accuracy.
I still hate the Steelers and I…CAN…NOT…STAND…THEIR…QB (I am done even saying his name. He is such a d-bag.
@92, I guess what I mean by “garbage time” is that, while Pittsburgh still had starters in, they weren’t playing with the urgency they were earlier. They let the Browns score, but the objective was to make Cleveland burn enough clock that it became a moot point. So, while I don’t mean to imply that Colt was going against backups on that drive, to say the Steelers were playing the “grade A” defense would be a bit of a stretch.
