While We’re Waiting…Browns Future, Staph Prevention and LeBron’s Twitter

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com

Cleveland Reboot doing some forward thinking, kind of like the Jetsons. Are Joe Haden and TJ Ward like the kitchen of tomorrow? Talking draft prospects before week 7- “While Smith has been one of my favorite players over the past few seasons, it’s obvious that his body can no longer endure a 16-game schedule – or in 2010, a five-game schedule. And as I’ve suggested a hundred times before, it’s past time for the Browns to actually invest in some young defensive line talent. In many ways, the 2011 Draft Watch begins…..well, now.” [DK/Cleveland Reboot]

There are companies that can make buildings bacteria resistant? Perhaps the Browns should get on board with the Bengals to eliminate staph infections- “Two years ago, Carter started ByoGlobe, one of several companies that specialize in making buildings and their interior surfaces bacteria-resistant. ByoGlobe, which uses a negative-electrostatic-charged sprayer and a special eco-friendly solution to coat suspect areas, counts the Bengals, Dolphins and Penn State football among its clients. But ByoGlobe isn’t alone: Coating Specialists, a company that also dispenses antimicrobial applications, has done business with the Yankees, Redskins, Magic, Notre Dame and the U.S. Army. Another firm, AtmosAir Solutions, provides technology that attacks airborne bacteria; its clientele spans most major sports, from Thrashers to Chiefs to Mariners, and is currently negotiating with an NBA team.” [Ric Bucher/ESPN]

Steelers’ fans react to Harrison’s ‘retirement talk’- “The following retirement talk is unfortunate and more than a little embarrassing. I understand the underlying frustration on Silverback’s part, but this is a childish way to respond to it. Harrison has to know especially after the pain comments and the fine itself that he doesn’t have friends in the media. They’ll gladly jump on any slip of the tongue. Sure, his agent claims his retirement talk is serious, though I have very serious doubts about that. Mike Tomlin has already since said that Harrison will be back at practice Thursday after being excused Wednesday. Good, the sooner this latest drama can be put behind the team, the better.” [Christmas Ape/DC Steeler Nation]

It seems everyone’s favorite Heat superstar is playing the victim card. Unnecessarily. “What I do take issue with is Brian’s assertion, no doubt taken from LeBron’s own description, that James “deals” with this on a “daily basis.” There’s racism everywhere, and people are morons. But LeBron doesn’t have to deal with this on a daily basis. At all. He doesn’t have to open up that TweetDeck. He doesn’t have to have a Twitter account at all. He doesn’t have to visit the message boards, or comment sections, and he doesn’t have to observe any sort of un-moderated community that would lead to these sorts of nasty, distressing comments.” [Kelly Dwyer/Ball Don't Lie]

Buckeye fans and armchair coaches strap yourselves in for some ‘what went wrong’ against Wisconsin. Well done sir- “My next issue is walking our 3rd LB up onto the LOS to cover up a TE. So we go to a 5-2, which you would think would help against the run. However, that defender was basically taken out of the play by alignment because they were running up the gut. All the TE had to do was keep him from crossing his face and then continue on to pick off a second level player. We were basically playing a 4-2 in an attempt to stop A GAP DIVES.” [Keith/Eleven Warriors]

You read that Steeler Nation blog and you have to wonder how they see all of this 180 degrees differently? They actually think this is some sort of media driven agenda to keep them and Harrison down? WTF?

“James Harrison: History’s greatest monster. At least according to the mainstream media. That is, until he’s inevitably supplanted by Ben Roethlisberger for something or other.” I like the “something or other” part. Big Ben sexually assults a woman? Yeah, damn that media! It was just “something or other.”

I’m going to defend LeBron for a moment. Dwyer is right in that LeBron doesn’t have to have a Twitter Account and read racist comments but why should that be an excuse to let racism slide. I think what LeBron did in this case is actually pretty brave. We shouldn’t let racism slide just because LeBron is a famous athlete who happened to go on a television show and act like a giant douche. He’s got the right to not to be demeaned for simply being who he is like the rest of us.

    That being said… Screw LeBron.

A coworker was telling me that this morning on SportsCenter ESPN showed some sort of poll showing the “white races’” hate towards LBJ? If that is true that is disgusting and ESPN should be ashamed of themselves.

  • b

Sportscenter did do that, but was ridiculous is that the polls, looked at objectively, only showed that it is the blacks who are outside the mainstream.
The polls basically boiled down to LBJ’s overall favorable opinion rating at about 35%, which took into account every race, not just black and white.
Then they broke down by only black and white, and whites were around the 32% mark, but blacks were at like 68%.
So it looks to me like white people are in the mainstream, though we didn’t see what Hispanic, Asian, Arab, etc. ratings are, whereas blacks would seem to be more than TWICE as likely to see him favorably. But somehow it’s white people whose opinions are based solely on race??

  • JK

    Exactly, b.

And just so you guys know, since we’re Cleveland fans. We are now all racist. Terrific, thanks ESPN.

“There are companies that can make buildings bacteria resistant? Perhaps the Browns should get on board with the Bengals to eliminate staph infections”

Didn’t they do this? I remember when the Winslow drama hit, the team talked about how they had experts in the lockerrooms cleaning stuff, and teaching everyone how to guard against staph.

    Levelheaded Steelers fans, FTW.

    Who said/implied that?

re: D line prospects- I know we have been hearing Claiborne’s name for a couple years now, and he’s supposedly the next great thing. What would make me wonder is his performance against Michigan last weekend. Claiborne was lined up over a redshirt freshman for most of the game and was noticably quiet. I don’t remember hearing his name much. I don’t remember too many impact plays.

I’m just saying you draft a guy that high who can make an impact no matter what…and getting “equalized” by a RS Frosh? Sends off warning bells in my mind.

  • b

@Mark, too many people, bordering on everyone, including LBJ, ESPN, CNN, Jesse Jackson, Jim Brown, etc.

  • Mike

I could not disagree more with Dwyer. So it’s LeBron James who needs to change his behavior to avoid running into hateful behavior? That is absolutely ignorant. The people sending the messages should be the ones being ridiculed and shouted-down, not LeBron.

  • Max

@ Mike- if you acknowledge their ignorace you give it life. If you ignore it, they get bored and try to ruin someone elses day

  • B-bo

I’m going to continue banging this drum: drafting O- and D-lines should be priority one. A strong o-line gives RBs room to run, QBs time to throw, and WRs time to get open. A strong D-line can pressure the QB–making life easier for the secondary–or at the very least occupy blockers to allow LBs through, and stuff the run. We have 60% of an o-line, and about 33% of a d-line right now.

you know what? i just realized we are going to be reading a gazillion pointless articles from ESPN about LeBron and the Heat. seriously, the racism stuff is crap. i can’t stand racism, and there is no place in the world for it. I think this article – and LeBron’s action of releasing tweets – are just to try and justify his quote on Larry King.

I, for one, have been a follower of Windhorst on twitter. But, after this piece of crap article, I am no longer following that sellout of a shill of ESPN. He may as well change his name to Stuart Scott Windhorst for all I care. I can’t believe the smug look on his face in that picture – it just adds to my contempt for his writing.

He used to be the best. Now he’s being used by ESPN.

first, lBJ had a tweet encouraging “hate tweets” to him. then, once the onslaught of hate tweets started he complained about receiving all these hate tweets. it was like he was trying to set this whole story up to get people to feel sorry for him in a pr move or something!
secondly, lebron recently discussed about how he “hated” people from cleveland growing up. i am not so narrow minded to think hating people because of where they are from is as awful as hating someone because of race, but at the end of the day “hate” is still a strong word and hate is hate. lebron’s actions over the years certainly showed he held people from cleveland with little regard, and for no reason other than the arbitrary fact of where those people lived. although clearly not the same thing, there is still a certain level of hypocrisy in lebron complaining about receiving racially-based hate tweets, while at the same time openly (and in a joking tone) talking about how he hated a group of people (ie, clevelanders) based solely on geographical origination.
