Open Thread: Panthers vs. Browns

The Browns are squaring off against the Panthers this afternoon in Cleveland Browns’ stadium.  If you happen to not be at the game or even if you have a snazzy smartphone down there, you can commiserate with all your fellow Browns fans here.

Make sure you come back shortly after the game for a recap of what we hope is a Browns’ first victory with Jake Delhomme at the helm.

I thought I’d feel pretty good about a win but that kinda sucked. Oh well, I’ll take it.

  • REEPJP

If Evan Moore doesn’t fumble the ball on the 2 yard line the game never is as close as it was….

  • Chris

@197: I’ve been thinking that the past two games… It’s like they are n’t even trying to tackle.

  • Vorax

Reep, the last guy who should be getting blame is Moore…

  • REEPJP

@Vorax, I understand that, and am not necessarily blaming Moore (I love the guy) but it’s impossible to deny that if he doesn’t fumble that ball, we at least come away with 3 more points (more than likely 7 with the way Hillis was running).

On the bright side, another game without Eric Wright, and another game without a team’s #1 receiver burning up the Browns.

Hat’s off to Joe Haden. He, Peyton Hills, Colt McCoy, and TJ Ward are making this season worthwhile.

I don’t know if I should be happy Robo had a good game or mad that because its a fluke/took this long to happen.

  • Chris

Paydaman: if it’s not a fluke, I don’t care HOW long it took to happen.

Another positive note is momass has come alive these past two games.

  • Chris

@reep: if the panthers don’t keep two of our drives alive with dumb penalties, we lose.

  • Believelander

This win should be forever known as the Great Escape.

  • C-Bus Kevin

On the not-so-bright-side, the bills dropped an OT TD in the endzone, and the Steelers just won on a FG. Crap…

  • historycat

@C-bus. I hate to say it, but I needed Pukesburg to win. Kept me alive in my pool.

/Glad I don’t have to pull for them anymore.

Also, I gotta say, there’s blame across the board for this shoulda-lost game.

    A) Evan Moore, if you’re going to fight for a TD at the goal line, PLEASE concern yourself with ball control FIRST and yardage SECOND, especially when you already got a first down inside the 5. -3 points.

    B) Jake Delhomme, please stop throwing the ball to the opposing team. -7 points.

    C) Offensive line, please convert on 4th and 1. No blame on Eric Mangini for going for it here; just blame on the wastage failing to convert on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and short. -3 points.

    D) Jesus Christ, I never thought I’d be calling for Eric Wright, but he needs to get his fat arse back into the game at least in limited nickel play. Ray Ventrone is a good person, but he’s not a legitimate nickelback, and has cost us big.

    E) Entire defense, please play NEARLY as well in the second half as you do in the first.

    F) Offensive line, please allow the Browns to get an actual first down when they can close out the game on offense. You are failing to dig in late when it’s super-critical. Also, Brian Daboll, why the Vickers-less runs? They know you’re going to run.

    G) Ref, please don’t bone the call on the booth review, because the receiver was clearly touched prior to any part of himself or the ball crossing into out of bounds territory. I mean really, seriously. The game was over, but it’s ok, let’s let them kick a field goal to win it anyway.

But seriously, if Moore doesn’t fumble, even if we come away with 3 there, Mangini will clearly opt for the FG on the 4th and 1 later. Going up by a full touchdown would make a big difference, and things would have been a hell of a lot more complicated for the Panthers later on. We missed opportunities on one, two, or three touchdowns/field goals because of execution, not coaching. Rob Ryan did his job on the gigantic YAC catch at the end there that got the Panthers to the 50; his job was to achieve an incomplete or a completion short of the first down. The latter occurred, and nobody did their job and made the damn tackle. If he gets tackled at, say, the 30 instead of the 50, the game is almost assuredly wrapped up as the clock continues to burn.

I’m gonna stay positive. Excuse me if this doesn’t seem natural, but I’m a Browns fan. Positive just doesn’t come easy.

    1) Joe Haden had the first game where he made an impact play at an important point in the game. He also tackled really well. He had coverage on the last pass play and he was in really good position. I think he knocks that ball down 9/10 times. Elam played well. And Ward was Ward. I think those 3 are going to be a pretty good core for the secondary.

    2) Robiske showed that he may have a place in the NFL. It’s not as a starting WR, but he may actually have some value as a deep bench receiver. He needs to start playing special teams though to really secure his roster spot.

    3) The WHOLE team played like crap the second half and we won. Folks, this is the NFL. There are 16 games. Winning teams have games like this where they don’t deserve to win, but do (look at Pittsburgh today for a perfect example). That’s progress. The ass-est kind of progress possible. But progress.

    4) Mangini sounded legitimately pissed in his presser. After a win. That might be a first. I think there are gonna be some really tough practices this week. Oklahoma Drills for one and all.

    5) This game is over.
