Game Preview: Jackets vs. Predators (Game #19)
November 22, 2010While We’re Waiting… Michigan Week, Joey Graham, More Ohio State/Michigan Week
November 23, 2010Update: Nothing to see here. It appears that all the speculation that started with Colin Cowherd was for nothing. The Browns didn’t do anything except move their press conference back. I am relieved. I am relieved that given the opportunity to act completely dysfunctionally, it didn’t happen in Berea this time. There are ways to handle your business and I don’t think firing people in the middle of the season (except in extreme examples: Wade Phillips) makes any sense what-so-ever. We will have more on this tomorrow, but as of now, nothing happened. Waiting to find out how healthy Colt McCoy is and we now know that Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace are both completely healthy. (End update.)
The Internet is abuzz with rumor and speculation right now. Eric Mangini’s press conference was allegedly rescheduled from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Then it was changed again from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Colin Cowherd’s name has been bandied about as someone who fueled further speculation that there could be major shakeups in Berea today. So now we are left to wait and wonder. I have tried my best to get to the bottom of it, but there is no clarity anywhere right now if anything is or is not actually happening today.
Some seem to think that today is the day that Brian Daboll gets his walking papers. Others seem to think that Mangini is a goner and that Rob Ryan or Mike Holmgren will take the reigns immediately. One gentleman on Twitter who goes by the name of _Believeland joked that the Browns are going to announce Jim Brown’s triumphant return to the ring of honor and advisor status. I am still skeptical that anything major is going to happen today, but these are the Browns. Predicting the unpredictable is always a good bet, I guess.
I am additionally skeptical that anything should happen today. I had a tough time with yesterday’s loss too. I think there is a finger of partial blame pointed at Daboll and the Browns’ offensive staff as I said yesterday. Still, I can’t imagine that much positive can be accomplished by making major organizational changes right this very second as the Browns are prepping to finish out their season.
We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, do you think anyone should be fired today? I still vote no. This just seems so strange considering how well the Browns were playing before injuries took hold against the Jets.
Also, you will remember I talked extensively about Mangini and the Proverbial Hot Seat earlier this year.

@Chris- For 1, I would have attacked the end zone when Haden’s INT set the ball up around the 18 yard line. Whether it be a straight drop back, or a PA then pass to Watson over the middle.
To take it a step forward, The browns need to line up Moore at 1, MoMass/Cribbs as 2 and Stuckey in the slot (cribbs there when MoMass is 2). Do people forget how good MoMass was before BE got traded? he was a solid #2 option, and i believe was like 8 catches for 120 some odd yards the game before Edwards was dealt. Moore has solid hands and can fight for the ball. He needs to be targeted more. Getting a top notch wide out (AJ Green probably) should be the top priority now… over getting a D playmaker.
Last thing- can St Clair play G? he has no movement to prevent the outside rush, but once Womack is back St. Clair should probably get looks inside with Lauvao.
I agree with Humboldt. Maybe Holmgren’s ex OC (name is escaping me right now but hes on staff somewhere…) should take over for Daboll.
“does Daboll have the skillset to take the Browns offense to a Super Bowl? Reasoned analysis would be lovely.
Acquire some decent wide receivers and I could probably offer you some reasoned analysis. However, since you obviously crave an answer right now, the answer is no. It’s hard to perform a “skillset” without any tools. I’d also like to add that Bill Walsh couldn’t win a Super Bowl with the talent on hand.
@bobby – Gil Haskell is who you are looking for. But taking over in the middle of the season with a new playbook isn’t going to accomplish anything positive.
Seriously, Craig, please see about having this picture made into a t-shirt. I’ll buy it. If not, I’m just going to steal it and do it myself.
I can tell ya right now what’s gonna happen in the offseason. Bye bye Daboll and hello Brad Childress.
I think Holmgren will try to pull Mornhinweg from Philly.

Tony Grossi offers no actual analysis of the game, he simply spouts off stories that relate to firing Mangini and Daboll, etc. Seriously, firing anyone would send this team backwards. Mangini’s system is working, Daboll is using the tools that he has afforded to him. How can you win games with the polished turds of receiving corps, minus Cribbs. We have no threats people. Hillis is a beast, and that’s great, but we need some receiving threats to throw defenses off. This whole “running people out of town” has to stop. It’s a fast food mentality that the Browns will make the playoffs and it has to be done now now now. I give Mangini two years and if he doesn’t make the playoffs, you need to evaluate why. Is it coaching, player talent? Coaches are just scapegoats because owners are afraid to tell a player that they suck and are ruining the team (see Favre).
The Browns will be a playoff team, if not next year, definitely in 2012. It takes time to get player talent and a system in place. People need to be patient. Football is a team sport, you need to have quality players in each position, doesn’t mean a superstar, just quality and reliable.
I for one enjoy that the Browns are competing in each game and are in it until the end. It’s a lot better than it was last year. The coaches cannot go out and play for the players. The players have to execute with the plays they are given and called out. People need to stop [WFNY edit: seriously, read the rules!! crapping] their pants and lower their expectations and have some patience. Be happy we have a competitive team and enjoy watching and rooting for them.
