Who would you rather have as a college freshman: Oden or Sullinger?
January 23, 2011While We’re Waiting… Dirty Sanchez, Skyenga and Tribe of Yester-year
January 24, 2011One reason is Aaron Rodgers. By the time this season’s over his name could very well be with, or ahead of, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the ‘best quarterback in the game discussion’, but I don’t really care about that.
I would like to see Aaron Rodgers win as many Super Bowls as Brett Farve was able to muster while calling the frozen tundra of Lambeau field home. Insert Chris Berman’s voice over that last line if you’d like to make it sound more annoying in your head.
Farve played 20 seasons in the NFL, 16 of which with the Cheese Heads. He won one Super Bowl.
Aaron Rodgers handled the ‘changing of the guard’ in Packertown with more class than I can ever imagine a player handling a situation like that. He’s started for the Packers for the last three seasons and all he’s done is prove why it was most definitely time for Brett Farve to pack up his Wrangler Jeans and head elsewhere.
He’s a six year NFLer overall, and it would just make all the incessant Brett Farve talk that we’ve heard over the last three or four years more tolerable for me if Aaron Rodgers can already do what it took Farve 20 years to do.
Win one Super Bowl.
The second reason I’d like to see the Packers win is not directly tied to the actually game at all. I think if the Packers go to the Super Bowl, Clay Matthews Jr. – the Cleveland Brown – could garner some attention needed to get him into the Hall of Fame, where he belongs.
I’ve always believed that Clay Matthews – the Brownie – should be in the Hall of Fame. If John Elway wouldn’t have led that drive down the field, or Earnest didn’t drop the pigskin, maybe he would be. But he’s not.
Bruce Matthews, his brother, made a point of going on record saying that he should be when Bruce was inducted into the Hall in 2007.
From Bruce Matthews’ Hall of Fame induction speech:
“I want to go on the record as saying that my brother Clay Matthews was without a doubt the best all around linebacker I’ve ever played with or against. There were some who may have been better at one discipline of linebacking, but none better all around. He played outside, inside, played the run well, covered backs, wide receivers, tight ends, rushed the passer, and excelled at all of them.
In an era of specialization, he was on the field every play and holds the record for most games played by a linebacker. The only negative surrounding my induction into the Hall of Fame is that my brother isn’t already in here.
All I can say is I look forward to the day when he’s standing up here getting inducted because he’s very deserving. He taught me about hard work, discipline, dedication, and the mindset necessary to excel. He was not only a role model, a big brother, but a best friend, and I thank God for him. I love you, my brother.”
Cleveland also loved and still loves Clay Matthews Jr. today, and I honestly think having his son – Clay Matthews III – playing in the Super Bowl would help him get fitted for that ugly blazer.
Think about the ESPN and NFL Network feel good story specials about the son of a 19-year NFL linebacker who’s grown up to be a superstar linebacker himself. I can hear the younger Clay talking about winning the ring that proved to be elusive to his father during his playing days, video footage rolling of Clay the Brown back in the day at Cleveland Browns stadium, etc.
I’m thinking that would get people asking the question, yeah that dude was a monster…how is he not in the Hall of Fame yet?
And in the weird world of Hall of Fame politics, I think it would help the 16-year Brownie for some reason. So yeah, go Packers.

Aaron Rodgers has a long time and a lot of work to do before his name is thrown in with Brady and Manning.
Go Pack! Would love to see Rodgers, Matthews, and especially AJ Hawk get rings!
Excellent piece, Bowers. It’s like you are in my head. Those are exactly the reasons that I’m pulling for the Pack. I really thought that Rogers was getting jobbed back when all the Favre crap was going on. I have always pulled for him because of that. Also, I have always liked lil’ Clay. I thought he was perfect for the 3-4 we played and it would’ve been really cool if we had drafted him. But, not drafting guys to play the system is one big reason why Mangini is gone.
Oh I’m definitely rooting for the Packers all the way. Aaron Rodgers is my favorite QB (besides Colt of course!).
Packers! Post # 2 sez it all!
@#2 — Don’t forget Ryan Pickett and Matt Wilhelm! Go Pack!
I want them to win because I don’t see the Bears beating Pittsburgh if they win tonight.
Green Bay held on that was an ugl
Ugly win but a win all the same. Steelers taking care of business showing just how far the Browns have to go to contend in the division. A loooooooooong way.
brooks said it right.
go pack. dom capers should be able to figure out how to contain and frustrate ben.
Go pack go… If the Stillers win another title, NE Ohio will become Pittsburgh east (moreso than it already is?)
For the record I picked the bad guys to win the superbowl before the season started, because life isn’t fair, and things can always get worse as a Cleveland fan.
This one’s easy. The Packers can beat The Enabling Rapist Brigade in a shootout (I don’t know if the Steeler DBs can handle those Packer wideouts), and Clay Jr. gives Browns fans a legit rooting on top of it. GO PACKERS!
