While We’re Waiting… Remembering Joe Carter, Iron Chef Symon and Cavs Crumbling
January 21, 2011Browns Coaching Search Concerning, Not Doomed
January 21, 2011The Cavaliers are 41 games into the regular season and there are still players who do not understand the team’s offensive schemes.
As amazing as that sounds, Byron Scott says that there are members of his team that still do not grasp what needs to be done on the offensive end. With Wednesday night’s game within reach, Scott says that the inability to execute in crunch time led to the eight-point defeat.
“We still have guys who don’t understand what we’re doing offensively,” said Scott. “Like I told them today, there’s no reason why that should be because most of these guys have been here all year long, so they should understand what we’re doing at all times.”
Per Scott, “four or five guys” that know the offense pretty well, listed at 90 percent. Some of the other guys, however, know about 50 percent of the scheme due to infrequently run plays and not being with the team for the full season. While the Princeton offense takes time to learn, the fact that the team is four months into organized basketball and specific players are still not up to speed has been deemed unacceptable.
Scott was visibly frustrated when discussing these matters, stating that if he had hair, he would have pulled it out after calling a play and getting baffled look from certain players. The frustration and self-characterized tantrums during practice are understandable given the team’s current 8-33 record and very little room for error.
On Wednesday night, there were multiple instances when point guard Ramon Sessions was attempting to point teammates – including veteran Jamario Moon – in the right direction, leading to slower execution and players running into one another on cuts. And despite having a short bench due to various injuries, center Ryan Hollins has not played in three of the past five games due to what Scott claims are lapses on both ends of the floor. Both players have been with the Cavaliers since the start of training camp.
“They might have to pull their playbooks out or get [to practice] earlier,” said Scott. “[They can] start going over [things] with us before we start practice. Just like we’re doing a lot of emphasizing on the defensive end, we may have to do that on offense as well.”

I’d think a year at Meridian Community College would prepare someone better than that.
Not hard to guess who the people are he’s referring to.
Yes…the players wearing Cavs jerseys.
To answer all those rhetorical questions: Yes, it can get worse. And this is it.
If these poor guys were getting paid a fair salary, maybe they’d have time to learn the plays. Presumably a lot of them have had to pick up a part-time job or two.
You forgot to say that most of these guys will have thrown away their money in 5 years and will be broke also.
This team is just lost period.
