January 11, 2011Browns Could Do Worse Than to Draft the Next Matthews
January 11, 2011As potential coaching candidates come in and out of Berea, Browns fans are left wondering where exactly the search stands.
Cleveland’s front office has remained very tight-lipped throughout the first 10 days of the option exploration, confirming only the names and days of candidate interviews. But as The Chronicle-Telegram’s Scott Petrak states, this could all change in the coming days as more candidates become available.
[Jon] Gruden will be done with his Monday night duties, and Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is available after Philadelphia was ousted from the playoffs Sunday by Green Bay. Shurmur has been labeled the “front-runner” to get the job by many national reporters, but may have to withstand a few more challengers.
Late last week, WFNY’s TD and DP also placed their prognostication on St. Louis’ Shurmer. Per the Eagles’ AndyReid, the Browns had not yet submitted paperwork to talk to Morninweg, who was the front-runner per Las Vegas just one week ago.
The team is expected to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell later today. With Shurmer and Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularky (not to be confused with Mullarky’s Irish Pub) already paying visit, Fewell will be the third candidate to sit down with Browns president Mike Holmgren. One topic of discussion may be Fewell’s 4-3 defense which ranked seventh in the NFL through the 2010 regular season.

Shurmer? Ugh…
Look…I’m sure he’s a great guy, but his current qualifications include coaching a Rams offense with the best rookie QB to a losing record. I know they had a chance to make the playoffs, but the NFC West was terrible this year.
One of the links in the “You May Also Like” section is a one on one with MattyFos. Is Matty a candidate for the Browns head coaching job?
Not a fan. But I guess that’s why I’m not a former super bowl winning coach running an NFL organization. I still trust in H&H…just not a sexy name at all.
Matty would restore honor to the franchise.
*sigh* When are people gonna realize that Gruden is a lost cause? All these fans/media/radio/TV personalities spending time talking about Jon Gruden to Cleveland is just a waste of everyone’s time and energy. In my opinion, if people wanna get real about this coaching search, spend that time more wisely by researching names likes Shurmur, Fewell, Mularkey (not to be confused with Mullarkey’s Irish Pub), and MAYBE Mornhinweg.
Oh, but those names are boring to a name like Gruden or Cowher. So instead, we’ll talk about those two guys and then get all mad and rant & rave because “HOLGREM didn’t hire Gruden!! He hired some guy we’ve never heard of before. Bah, garble, garble!!” *sigh*
CoachA12- I think the speculation about Gruden is entirely fair. #1- Gruden’s own son mentioned a couple weeks ago that Gruden woould either coach SF or the Browns. #2- Gruden’s dad mentioned that he wanted his son to coach the Browns and #3- Gruden has coached under, and by all accounts, is still friendly with Holmgren.
I don’t think he will end up here but he is certainly not out of the question. Whether it is a good fit is a whole other topic entirely.
I just think the love/hate commentary regarding Gruden is overblown on both sides.
Do I think he’s the greatest coaching prospect for this team since Paul Brown? Not really.
But would you really be that upset if they hired him? If you answered yes…congrats. You are officially a hater. And as they say, haters gon’ hate.
Sexy doesn’t work with Cleveland. See: Edwards, Winslow, James, etc.
Find the right man for the job and who cares if his name sounds like a middle-school teacher.
The same people who knock Gruden probably defended Mangini. For me Gruden is a Bill Cowher Jr. And after all if the losers that have been head coach how could anyone knock Gruden? I’m glad Holmgren is hiring as opposed to other people.
Also, if WFNY readers are now in the running, I am officially throwing my hat in the ring.
Now, if you’ll humor me, some resume highlights:
-watches lots of football
-over 15 years of Madden experience
-knows how to manage a game clock (see: “Madden” above)
-speaks in complete sentences
-willing to relocate (will change avatar name to “C-Land Kevin”)
-wasn’t born a Buckeye Fan (won’t encourage selection of mediocre Buckeyes in draft)
-willing/able to grow sweet mustache
Your move Holmgren…
@ #1 Ditto. I want an upgrade at coach. Where is the “wow factor”?
I am not a hater re: Gruden. I was totally on the Gruden bandwagon for a long time. But I have come to the realization that he is most-likely not returning to coaching in 2011 and therefore, I feel that any continued pining for him and subsequent disappointment/anger felt when he doesn’t get hired would be ill-advised. Instead, I feel it behoove all parties involved to get to know the ‘REAL’ candidates so you can’t claim ignorance when you’re moping about getting a guy you’ve never heard of before. “Mwwahhhhh, but I wanted Gruden cuz’ I see him on TV and he frowns a lot.”
@ Billy…I agree. In my opinion, head coaching experience isn’t required, but I’d like a somewhat better track record of success.
I am on the C-Bus Kevin train. That guy has one heckava resume.
I would be honored to be interviewed for the coaching job.
What happened with the coaching staff? Weren’t they supposed to meet with Holmgren yesterday? I haven’t heard anything about those meetings.
This all seems so foolish. We all know who’s the man for the job – Ron Prince. #RonP4Cleveland
Gruden.
Nuff said
If not wanting Gruden due to the fact that he showed an inability to sustain a quality team, thanks in large part to indecisiveness with key personnel (namely the QB position) and utter failure to develop young talent, all while slowly alienating the fans and media (not that THAT could ever happen in Cleveland!), then I suppose I am a hater. He is not a building block, he is a capstone. If we were on the verge of a Super Bowl and Mangini had failed to get us over the top, the Chucky would be our guy. I can’t imagine anyone making the argument that this franchise is at that point.
