Week 17 Open Thread: Steelers at Browns

And here we are folks, the NFL season comes to an end today for the Cleveland Browns (5-10) as they host the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Steelers (11-4) at 1 p.m. It is a rematch of a Pittsburgh win earlier in the season, and the Browns will hope to match their record from last year with another upset. Colt McCoy will get an opportunity for his third win against a playoff team, but he will be tested against James Harrison and the always stingy Steelers defense. We shall see how this outcome also affects offseason feelings, much like last year’s win over Pittsburgh spurred optimism heading into the Mike Holmgren era.

As always, stick with WFNY for your in-game comments and travel around the site for all the preview materials. “The Browns Will Win If…” and Craig’s intel info are the essentials, and we shall see again shortly after this game about the fate of head coach Eric Mangini.

I, too, just saw CBS cut to a “more competitive game.” I would like to point out that the more competitive game features two teams that were just as bad as the Browns last year. So much for the no talent argument.

#8: Wait, let’s not be rash, how ’bout you be coach and I be The Tiebreaker?”

#7: “Did I mention we beat NO and NE?”

#6: “We knocked Roethlisberger out of the game, didn’t we?”

@ 101 further to your point… Tampa Bay is playing inspired football & has a an outside chance to make the playoffs with the youngest team in the league. Last year’s 3-13 Buccaneers!

#5: “First we get rid of the bad dudes, then we fix up the practice facility, then we learn to practice, then we learn in-game skills … right on schedule, Holms!”

    from the Mangini meeting tomorrow:

Holmgren: These are the new draft picks. These are the Browns Draft picks. And to you they’re gold, and you don’t get them. Why? Because to give them to you would be throwing them away. They’re for closers.

  • historycat

Holmgren: We’re adding a little something to this month’s AFL Central contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you’re fired. (And Eric, you came in 3rd).

#4: “I’m just sayin’ that my method of flip-flopping QBs at the end of a meaningless season worked pretty well last year.”

ok, someone else take over, can’t take it any more.

Dabol: We don’t gotta sit here and listen to this.
Holmgren: You CERTAINLY don’t pal, ’cause the good news is – you’re fired.

Whatever Holmgren might think about Mangini, the players have clearly decided his job is not worth fighting for. There is no excuse for letting your (one time) rival do this to you at home. The talent discrepancy is real, but it not the yawning chasm that this game is. This ending pretty much balances out the real positives that had shown up a couple of times this year.

Holmgren [to Ryan]: Put. That coffee. Down. Coffee’s for closers only.

  • historycat

Holmgren: And to answer you question, pal, why am I here? I came here because the Lerner’s asked me to. They asked me for a favor. I said the real favor, follow my advice and fire your EDITing EDIT because a loser is a loser.

This comments section has turned into the Cleveland Browns of comments sections.

    Nice.

Even Donovan and Dieken are laughing out load at Mangini’s FG call in the first half.

  • historycat

    4 sacks
    8 hurries
    6 knocked down

    that’s 18 plays.

  • historycat

They just compared Royal to a little league right fielder. Nice.

  • Emily

    Royal again.

  • subadai

That’s it Eric. Don’t go down w/ out a senseless challenge. Just so we don’t forget what a knuckleknob you are.

  • subadai

On an unrelated note: I don’t think this Miller Lite vortex bottle contraption does a damn thing.

  • Emily

    FINALLY.

  • historycat

Why are you going for 2? are you trying to get Colt and Cribbs hurt? Especially when they could challenge and take it off the board.

That’s a special kind of dumb.

  • subadai

“That’s a special kind of dumb.”

That takes a Randy Lerner kind of dumb.

  • ManSleezee

Daboll’s run out of tricks (& hopefully games as the Browns OC)… Clearly. The defense seems to know what’s coming every time Wallace is on the field.

  • historycat

And then you don’t go onside? so what’s the point?

I’m so confused by this “game plan”

  • saggy

    the Browns suck.

  • saggy

by the way, i also think Rob Ryan sucks. I’d be fine with him gone. Overrated slob.

    haha, Slob Ryan.

I wish I had a non-linear editing machine for the real world. I could then simply splice the end of Week 13 2009 with the beginning of Week 13 2010… and it would make sense to me.

I am inexplicably confused right now.

  • Shamrock

It’s time for the same fans who saved this sorry franchise to send a clear message to this team and that is you are no longer going to accept this sorry bunch of crap that the Browns call football. Why Holmgren gave Mangini another year is beyond me but it’s tine for HEADS to roll. The thing I heard was that Holmgren was possibly interested in young assistant coaches as head coach possibilities. I sure hope this isn’t true I really do. Like the hiring of Holmgren this team needs a coach and staff that has experience, winning tradition and just some kind of clue. Good luck.

  • Mark

@Shamrock – you mean young assistants like Sean Payton? Or Lovie Smith? Or John Harbaugh? Or Mike Tomlin? Or Raheem Morris?

  • Marc K

If anyone cares.. we moved a couple spots up in the draft order with Detroit and Dallas winning today.. We’ll have the sixth pick next year.
