January 26, 2011Dime: Sullinger is “Safest” Pick for Cavs

Craig knocks out a great piece on WHEN Cleveland gets a title- “If our “sports misery” truly was misery by its most traditional definition, we wouldn’t be sports fans anymore. In the sports world as we have learned over the years, sports misery can become a badge of honor. The hard-headed refusal to stop rooting begins to define a fan base as just a little bit too crazy to be messed with.” [Craig/Still WFNY]

Reports have the Browns talking with Helu at the Senior Bowl- “Another running back I liked during the morning practice was Nebraska’s Roy Helu, Jr. Helu showed tremendous quickness out of an early sprint draw handoff from Ricky Stanzi. He seems to be a very effective transitional runner from the backfield through the first to the second level — Helu keeps his pads low and explodes through tackles with quickness. The Cornhuskers’ I-back has some serious size (5-11, 215 pounds) behind his speed, and he could be a very nice hybris back at the next level.” [Shut Down Corner]

With Dawson’s contract situation, Browns check into kickers in the draft- Henery is the top rated kicker of this year’s draft class. With rumors circulating that Phil Dawson might have played his final game with the Browns, it isn’t a surprise to hear that Cleveland is checking out Henery. Over the next couple of weeks, there will probably be a lot of players reported on that the Browns “scouted” or “talked to.” In order to keep track of all of the players and where and how often the Browns showed interest in them, I’ll form a table that will be posted one or two times per week, depending on the number of updates that come in.” [Dawgs by Nature]

The case for Vernon Gholston, biggest Jets bust ever- “After three complete professional seasons, two of them under a head coach known for his defensive mind and getting the most out of his guys, Gholston has played in 45 games. He has recorded 42 tackles. Zero sacks. Over the course of the season he was eclipsed in terms of snaps by no-name undrafted free agents and 13-year veterans, each of whom thoroughly surpassed Vern’s production. Brad Smith accumulated more tackles than Gholston this year.” [The Legend of Cecilio Guante]

Eyenga now the Cavaliers’ 216th leading scorer. For the record, he is hitting 19% from beyond the three point line. Four makes out of twenty one shots. Not good. [Stepien Rules]

Something I thought about while watching that last browns game but I can’t remember if it was ever discussed here – why did we go for 2 after the touchdown? Why not let Dawson kick his last point in his last game at Browns stadium as a member of the Browns? It seemed very odd to me at the time, but maybe I was the only one to blow it out of proportion
Anyone else support a moratorium on “Skyenga”? It’s not funny or particularly clever…mostly just depressing that he’s the most compelling reason to watch the team right now
Vern needs to go to a 4-3 team where he doesn’t have to worry about LB responsibilities.
21 shots is not an indicative sample size.
