Cavs News and Notes: Fanatic Jerseys, Bucks Preview, and Eyenga Returns
January 21, 2011Cavs latest loss is to Earl Boykins and the Bucks
January 22, 2011Eric Mangini may be on his way to Tennessee: “On Thursday’s PFT Live, former Browns and Jets coach Eric Mangini said he’s “looking at a lot of different opportunities” for 2011.
Although Mangini’s comments came before the news broke that Chuck Cecil will not be back as Titans’ defensive coordinator in 2011, it now appears that the best of Mangini’s opportunities may be to coordinate the Titans’ defense.
Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that Mangini is a serious candidate for Tennessee’s defensive coordinator position.
Jeff Fisher has preferred a 4-3 defense in Tennessee, but Mangini arriving would open the possibility that the Titans would switch to a 3-4.” [Michael David Smith / PFT]

Manny Ramirez is on his way to Tampa Bay, along with Johnny Damon: “The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to terms with both former All-Stars. Damon agreed to a one-year deal worth $5.25 million plus incentives tied to attendance, and Ramirez one year at $2 million. Both deals are pending physicals.
The 38-year-old Ramirez began last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, then was claimed on waivers late in the summer by the Chicago White Sox. He hit a combined .298 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in the final season of a $45 million, two-year contract he signed with the Dodgers.
Hampered by injuries, the longtime slugger had 320 plate appearances in 90 games. Still a power threat, he likely will be a designated hitter for the Rays.” [John Heyman / SI.com]

On Brown’s hiring Dick Jauron yesterday: “Jauron brings a wealth of experience to the defensive side of the ball, along with a degree of experience that new head coach Pat Shurmur is currently lacking. Let’s call this a nice sense of balance, as Shurmur’s main priority would seemingly come in fixing a moribund offensive attack.
While the merits of Jauron can be argued – mostly based on his last two head coaching jobs – his hire could prove critical to a unit that will likely face a high amount of personnel turnover during the offseason.” [Dave Kolonich / OBR]

On Cavs plus / minus, effort: “Two of the worst players for the Cavaliers this year, in terms of +/-, have been J.J. Hickson and Mo Williams.
Hickson has a total of -285, a per game of -7.31 and a per minute of -0.303, while Williams is at a total of -278, a per game of -8.42 and a per minute of -0.227. Those numbers are very poor, especially for players with the talent levels of Hickson and Williams.
These poor numbers scream out lack of effort for these players, which is inexcusable.” [Dave Wooley / Stepien Rules]

Previewing the OSU – Illini game later today: “Ohio State moves into a difficult stretch this weekend as they go back on the road to face the #22 Fighting Illini of Illinois in front of what is sure to be a very hostile and very loud Assembly Hall crowd.
The 12 Noon tipoff will be nationally televised on CBS, giving many hoops fans a chance to see the Buckeyes for the first time in a while. Seven of OSU’s next nine opponents are ranked in the top 25, which makes it important to get the tough stretch off to a good start.
With the #1 ranking displayed proudly in front of their name, the OSU players will be under more pressure than many of them have ever seen. Each team they play from here on will treat the game like it’s a Final Four contest and coaches will pull out all the stops to try to spring the upset.” [Joe / Eleven Warriors]

One year at $2 million for Manny. Approximately one-fifth of what the Indians will pay their DH, potentially three-times the productivity. A ton more baked in nostalgia.
Good for Mangini if it works out. I don’t have any ill will toward the guy, and I think DC is the ideal role for him.
And I’m particularly excited to see Manny heading to the Rays. I get over to the mausoleum that is Tropicana Field at least a half-dozen times each season (mainly when the Tribe comes to town), and look forward to seeing him in action–when healthy, of course. Say what you want about the guy, he’s still probably the best right-handed hitter I’ve ever seen. The fact that Johnny Damon’s noodle arm might also be on display in the outfield from time to time is just a bonus: “Looks like Jesus, Acts like Judas, Throws like Mary” is still my favorite crowd sign from a baseball game ever!
BUT MANGINI WILL NEVER WORK AGAIN BECAUSE EVERY COACH HATES HIM AND HE’S TERRIBLE AND MORE LOUD NOISES!!!
(seriously, good for Mangini. Fisher’s no-nonsense style fits him as well as Rob Ryans nonsense style fits Dallas)
1. I said Mangini was suited to either be a position coach or coordinator.
2. I said Mo Willuams was a bum yet nobody even mentions him this despite his Houdini act in last years playoffs. Instead it was all LeBron’s fault.
3. I said JJ Hickson was terrible. I guess stats don’t lie.
On a side note I tuned into the last Cavaliers game which featured email questions and lived hearing all the positives. With Samuels, Harris, Agee and Eyenga the team has a future according to McLoud and Carr. Future of relocating maybe. I understand being homers but c’mon now let’s have some perspective. I mean these two made the connectors here sound like you know what you are talking about and that ain’t easy.
lived = loved
And we didn’t try to sign Manny for a measly $2 mil??? Not surprising.
