I whole-heartedly agree with this piece. We get emails daily from the Player’s Association. They have launched an all out blitz to win fans over- “This is not me taking a side in the lockout. This is me resenting even being asked to take a side. My side is “shut up, work it out, and play football.” I don’t care what you do or how you do it. I don’t even want to know. Quit trying to win sympathy and just figure it out.” [MJD/Shutdown Corner]

Tried to explain this over twitter to a fan. Should have pointed him here instead- “With that in mind, watch how the news that Choo has been signed to a one-year deal or a two-year deal (and remember that Boras agent Prince Fielder signed away his first two years of arbitration in a contract) or however this shakes out is presented and received by the usual suspects. When he’s “signed”, people will see it as a positive sign in that the Indians are keeping Choo…as if that has ever come into question, given his service time status.” [Paul C./The DiaTribe]

Draft process underway- “The Browns were among four teams that talked with North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin. The Browns were the only team to talk to Central Florida defensive end Bruce Miller.” [Delco/The OBR]

Hard to argue- “The Cleveland Cavaliers have hit the bottom. I’ve stood by the team through their rise and fall, and even now during their darkest hour. Plagued by injuries, players are out of position, out of synch and flat out embarrassed to be on the court in their own words. Jamison, Hickson and Mo Williams(notes) and have all been quoted with sentiments unbecoming of professional ball players. No matter who we play, right now they feel like they can beat us,” “in 13 years, I can honestly say I ain’t ever felt that embarrassed to be on the basketball court” [Branch/Yahoo!]

Was watching Big Ten hoops last night. Izzo must feel so good about his decision to stay at the college level after seeing the Cavs now.
The emails about the lockout are laughable. The simple fact that someone wants fans to take a side for a fight between millionaires and billionaires makes me chuckle.
As fans, we all know that the vast majority of football players are guided by paychecks, not by colors on a jersey. If this is the case, why should any of us give a damn if they got 55% of the revenue or 60%? I don’t care what they get, as long as I get a football game on Sunday.
I am picturing Eric Wedge waking up to the news about Milton Bradley this morning. Good luck with that Eric!
Can someone explain to me just what the NFL labor dispute is even about? I’d love to read an article about it or something.
While anything is certainly possible, I can’t imagine the NFL will actually reach the point where there will not be games this fall.
There is simply too much money involved for these guys not work things out, for example ESPN’s deal to pay $2 billion (that’s billion with a B) for Monday Night Football.
Chris: as with most things, the dispute is about money. The owners want to keep more of it because they have so much debt from stadium construction (see Jerry Jones in Dallas) that they want to keep a bigger part of the pie. The players are telling the owners to stuff it because they don’t believe they should have to foot the bill for where they play (workers shouldn’t have to pay for the factory).
That’s a highly simplified summary, but pretty accurate.
Sure, of course it’s about money. I just wasn’t sure which side was asking for more of it. 🙂
Both sides are asking for more, which is where the “whoa is me” attitude from both sides come into play.
It looks like the owners are trying to [take liberties?] with the players, and the players don’t particularly like it for obvious reasons. However, I don’t really care who gets our money, so long as games are played on Sunday.
@Chris
There are also issues of owners wanting a longer season and players wanting owners to pay into a retired players health insurance fund.
Don’t forget the rookie salary cap. That will be a part as well. I think the 18 game season and rookie salary cap are going to be the sticking points. Players seem to be very much against both.
@Mike E: Wait, Izzo’s not coming to the Cavs!?
#wfnysourced
I’m not sure how much the players will be against a rookie cap so long as the money goes to veterans instead.
As for the 18-game schedule…get ready to see the Charlie Frye’s of the world playing in the Super Bowl, because they will be the only ones left standing after running that gauntlet.
