February 10, 2011While We’re Waiting… Spring Training Storylines, Cabrera Signing and McShay Picks
February 11, 2011According to a report by Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, the Indians will be adding SS Orlando Cabrera to the team. Cabrera spent last season playing for the Reds.
He is a strong defensive player that doesn’t hurt you at the plate as a middle infielder. He is 36, so he is certainly not a long term solution by any means, but does give the Tribe some flexibility. He could easily play second or short if the team wanted to move Asdrubal to second. He could even put in some time at third base, which of course is the big mystery position for the Tribe.
ESPN Insider hints that Cabrera might not have had many offers for a starting job, and that he could end up in a platoon situation with Jason Donald at second and Valbuena at third. This is a typical move for the Indians, bringing in an aging vet to compete for an infield spot, while providing depth and experience. See Carroll, Jamey or DeRosa, Mark.
The team has not confirmed the move.

Why didn’t we just keep Carroll, Jamey, or DeRosa, Mark?

Everytime we sign one of these old guys way past their prime who wont retire because they think they still got it I feel like I’m in Back to the Future.
Why here, does Cabrera have to repay gambling debts to the mob by next week? Actually, like this. Even if he’s never played third, he’d be our best guy at that position since, um, Aaron Boone.
Hey, what about Aaron Boone at third? Or The Muscle – wonder what he’s up to. Antonetti has one major league contract for all you old salts and he’s nailing it up on the mast. You want it, boys, whoever grabs it first.
Ok, that wraps up today’s episode of Tribe Bile.

Should we just start shopping him to Seattle now or wait until April?

Platoon!!!
On the brightside, the Indians might win more games than the Cavs this year
Hey finally a free agent who can play, well mostly. Cabrera might be a little long in the tooth now but I like his fire. Nice signing if it happens.
Personally I love the move. He is a better defender than any of the middle infielders we currently have. Last time I checked that was a pretty big problem for us last year.
@10 – he won’t even be our best defensive middle fielder named Cabrera 🙂
Cabrera Squared could be a great middle combo for groundball pitchers though (dangit Westbrook, come home)
There needs to be an All-Cabrera team.. like an all star team but only palyers named cabrera. There’s like 6 at each position, right?
I miss Jolbert Cabrera… he could fly…
@11 I like Asdrubal but I really think he lacks range sometimes. Maybe it’s just me?
