Shaun Rogers: “I Think I Did Alright”

Somewhere, Shaun Rogers is clicking the heels of his ruby-red cleats, repeatedly envisioning what it would be like to return home.

In a recent interview with KILT in Houston, the 31-year-old defensive tackle says that his “dream scenario” is to sign with his hometown team of the Houston Texans.

The first round of Browns offseason moves came last week when the team parted ways with several players who would be considered to be on the down side of their respective careers.  One of these players was the former Pro Bowl lineman who has had an up-and-down stint with the Browns since being acquired back in 2008.

Rogers, unfortunately, was due to make considerably more money that he was worth and the Browns were forced to part ways.  Shortly thereafter, the team’s GM Tom Heckert called Rogers a “different cat,” likely due to his temperamental nature which was evident from the first week former head coach Eric Mangini stepped into Berea.

In the interview with KILT, Rogers wanted to clear the air on any negative perception that may be looming in front of potential employers, selling them on the fact that he can be on the field for all three downs.

“The league is getting specialized as far as guys playing two downs and bringing in other guys in third down situations,” said Rogers. “You see that a lot in the league. In my career I’ve been blessed and had the ability to do both. I’m just looking to get healthy and go out there and play at a level where I played at for many years which I consider to be one of the upper levels or a Pro-Bowl level.”

Rogers admitted that his injury in 2009 opened the door for Athyba Rubin to take over within the 3-4 defense and surprise coaches in back-to-back seasons.  The veteran lineman also stated that, despite his agent pleading otherwise, that he played through injuries through all of 2010.

Through the season, Rogers amassed a career-low in tackles with 17 and tied his career-low in sacks with two – a total that matched the previous year despite playing in four more contests.

“We’re competitors in this game and guys go out there and try and give there all excluding all circumstances,” said Rogers. ”I think I did alright with what I was asked to do this year.”

But hey, it’s cool. No big whoop. Not like i’m a professional or anything.

Dude may complain about playing for losers, but strikes me as a guy who will always seek the last buck and eat the last donut, no matter how good the team.

What a waste, this guy could be HOF material if he’d been kidnapped at age 25 and had his brain swapped with that of almost any other lineman. (Hmm, maybe there’s a business idea in there somewhere …)

The Browns have been rebuilding every 2-3 seasons? They get a winning season and then they screw it up and want to blame players. Seems the blame points to ownership. Can’t keep drinking the “blame the player” kool aid too much longer.

Yeah Shaun you did alright , when the mood struck you!

  • bobby

I have no ill-will towards Big Baby. He was one of my favorite browns and I was hoping to see him bounce back this year. I think everyone knows he could be a dominating player when he wants, but at least he’s never Haynesworth’ed his way through anything.

” I did alright with what I was asked to do this year ” This statement from Shaun is hard to believe. He can’t tell me that the Browns said just go to practice on Fridays. How does any team make game plans around a player that doesn’t practice ? Shaun had one good year with the Browns . How can you miss a player when it seemed that he didn’t want to be there ? I wish him luck , but I’m glad hes gone .

  • STEVENCLEVELAND

He thinks he “did Allright”……….what a fat, worthless loser. The dummy doesn’t real, ize that if he ever got his buffet slammin behind anywhere south of ohhh..330 he probably would be a PERENNIAL pro-bowler (and just think of the all you can eat fish and poi at the Mauii Radisson, Shaun!)

  • Ed takacs

Keep fireing the coach and you will never have a back to back winning season.

  • Eddie

Rogers was WAY overdue to be let go. He had NO willingness to get on the field and play PRO Football. My bet is he will at best sign at a low grade pay for any team willing to take a chance on him.

  • Chris

I think he did “alright” too. That’s the problem, though, because he has pro-bowl caliber talent.

  • whipjacka

I don’t really understand the hate towards rogers. It seems to me that our offense was the problem this year. Stop being so sour

  • Shamrock

Hope Rogers goes to Baltimore or Pittsburgh as a FA!

  • JM

So Rogers admitted he can’t play 3 downs? It is either 2 or just 1. Nice.
