Early positive news from spring training- “Last year, Brantley struggled with getting started on time, causing a chain reaction that made it difficult for him to recognize pitches. Indians manager Manny Acta noted that one problem that came out of that was Brantley had struggles attacking pitches on the outer half of the plate. Nunnally said Brantley became predictable for Major League fielders, who would shade him in and toward the left-field line…. It is obviously early in Spring Training, but Nunnally said he has not seen similar issues in his early sessions with Brantley. He said the outfielder’s mechanics are sound right now. The only thing Nunnally said he is working on right now with Brantley is making sure he stays on top of the ball when taking pitches to the opposite field.” [Bastian/Major League Bastian]

Making the case for the small market- “Regardless, some people tend to believe that having the NBA relevant in New York is a great thing for the league as a whole. It is clearly a huge market and has one of the most historic arenas and all of that. The people that I have found in favor of the move are typically those who are making money off of it. Relevance in big cities, such as New York, leads to more fans and more interest in the league. More interest means more media coverage. These are certainly positive aspects but when I consider the big picture concerning the welfare of the NBA, I find myself firmly planted in the other camp.” [Kaczmarek/Fear the Sword]

Looking for a new gig? MLB is looking for one lucky fan to get a ‘dream job’- “Major League Baseball is conducting a casting call for a baseball fan’s dream job. The winner of this Dream Job promotion will move to NYC to star in a baseball web series and be a part of a live interactive experience for baseball fans that will include watching every MLB game over the course of the entire baseball season (simultaneously when multiple games are on at the same time), blogging opinions, interacting with fans through social media and appearing in video blogs. The web series will be distributed on MLB.com and through social media outlets.” [MLB.com]

Walker’s AFC North player rankings continue with Cribbs #32, Mack #30 and Steinbach #25 (!?)- [Walker/AFC North Blog]
Speaking Walker, notice the overall subject, and reasoning behind this piece from yesterday, and this piece I wrote on January 24th. My point isn’t to say that I think Walker stole my idea. Not in the least. My point is how is this not a topic more people are talking about in regard to the labor situation?

That MLB job sounds like hell on earth. I like baseball as much as the next guy, but come on. Every game, for every team, all season long? No thank you.
Dawson? Franchise Tag? Come on WFNY!
@1 – I had the exact same reaction. And that was assuming that it was every game for just one team. The Ludovico Technique from Clockwork Orange meets Major League Baseball…
#1 & #3, you fail to mention the worst part – having to move to NY.
Gotta go, ESPN agents are coming after me now…
Just sayin- how is Cribbs the 32nd best player of the AFC north last year? he was not good, and should not have even made the list.
living in NYC, being forcefed every bad baseball game I don’t care about (looking at you NL) and having to interact with a bunch of random people online who likely will treat you as their personal internet whipping boy. Oh sure, where do I sign up?
and that anti-NY-centric blog post was written BEFORE Deron Williams became a soon-to-be Brooklyn Net.
if the NFL and NFLPA agree to a deal in August or early Sept, delay the start of the season by a few weeks and then just go, yeah it’ll stink watching our defense the first few weeks. then again, we should be used to that, no?
@bobby – I think Walker contemplated Cribbs injuries when making that list and gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Brantley fluff pieces still get me excited. If he can get his OBP up, then we actually might have an offense this year (Brantley, Asdrubal, Choo, Santana, Sizemore as our top5 in the order)
Id take Thabeet. Not that Hasheem has proven anything but Ryan Hollins clearly isn’t the answer at C.
