February 7, 2011Lack of Go-To Option Sinks Cavs Again, Streak Extends to 25

Agree 100% with this- “5. There are far fewer bandwagon Cavs fans than I thought there were. Dan Gilbert makes people renew their season tickets before LeBron makes his decision to leave last year, people invest hundreds and thousands of dollars into the team as a result on the chance he re-ups, he doesn’t, and the Cavaliers are 8-43 heading towards the All Star break. I’d have expected some sentiment amongst season ticket holders of a feeling of being swindled to some degree, or in the very least an empty arena despite the ticket sales. Neither has obviously happened though, and the response has been the exact opposite. The atmosphere in the arena has felt like a playoff crowd more than a few times this season, and that’s sort of amazing to me all things considering.” [Bowers/Still WFNY]

Handing out offseason grades for the AL Central. Guess what Cleveland got- “The Tribe won 69 games, and they’ve done nothing this offseason to upgrade the team through free agency or trades. Chris Antonetti, in his first year as general manager, is on a tight leash from the Dolan family, and Austin Kearns’ $1.8 million contract is the only major league deal given out by the team this winter.” [Crasnick/ESPN]

Looking ahead to the 2012 recruiting class- “With 5 players already in the fold, the Buckeyes will be looking to add approximately 10-15 additional prospects over the next 12 months. Like 2011, the class will fill up quickly (primarily with in-state players), leaving the coaches plenty of time to focus on a small number of elite out-of-state targets that will take a bit longer to reel in. Regardless of who the Buckeyes sign, disappointment is inevitable in 2012. Ohio State will miss on some extremely talented players simply because there won’t be room for them. The in-state players heading abroad will be particularly difficult to witness, but you play the hand you are dealt.” [Jim/Buckeye Battle Cry]

A top 5 reasons to befriend a Cavs fan list. Cavs fans getting a lot of link love today- “5. Honest – Cleveland fans know the score. They realize the team is struggling, they don’t deny the many mistakes made on the court, but they still fill the seats and flip on the TV. They can present an accurate picture of the situation because they pay attention. The only friend worth having is an honest friend who doesn’t pretend or manipulate for their own gain. Cleveland fans have little to gain “standing by their man” except ridicule from the rest of the NBA fans, but the alternative isn’t an option for a true fan.” [Branch/Yahoo!]

The AL Central report card piece prefaces the report cards with this:
“Did the five clubs meet their goals this offseason and advance their organizational agendas? We take a look with our AL Central report cards:”
I fail to see how the Indians earn only a D in advancing their organizational agenda, presuming this is to groom the young players and hope for contention in the next two years. Plus they subtracted Andy Marte. That itself is worth at least a C.
