Laffey Sent Packing, Race For #5 Thins

It was a move that will go unnoticed by most Indians fans, but late yesterday, GM Chris Antonetti sent Left-hander Aaron Laffey to the Seattle Mariners for minor league Infielder Matt Lawson. (No, its not the return of Matt Lawton people). Laffey was in a group of pitchers vying for the fifth spot in the Indians starting rotation.

That group has now been reduced by one.

Laffey was a guy who I felt was really jacked around with by the Indians brass. Some of it was his own doing because he showed such versatility. Rewind to 2007, Cliff Lee was a mess and the Indians were in desperate need of a fifth starter. They turned to the minors where Laffey was excelling in both AA and AAA. He combined to go 13-4 with a 2.88 ERA and was given the call to join the big club. He made nine starts and went 4-2 with a 4.56 ERA. His ability to induce the ground ball impressed the Tribe enough to put him on their postseason roster ahead of Lee.

Think about that for a second.

Heading into 2008, Laffey seemed to be ready to take the next step at age 23 and become a fixture at the bottom of the rotation. Instead he bounced back and forth between AAA and the majors, where he was 5-7 with a 4.23 ERA in 16 starts. Then came the 2009 season which seemed to be where Laffey’s arm strength and health began to fail him.

Laffey won a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training, but with all of the various injuries and bullpen failures, the Indians made the decision to put Laffey in the bullpen in a key role to stabilize things. While he did a solid job at the time, his elbow problems began to flare up. He did his best to soldier on through it, but a DL stint lasted through the dog days of summer.

When he returned, he just wasn’t the same. 2010 was another year of the I-71 shuttle. When Laffey was up with the Tribe, he spent most of his time (29 of his 34 appearances) coming out of the bullpen. Towards the end of his season (before another DL stint), Laffey admitted that his 81 mph pitch was his “fastball” on a day he struck out the Twins Jim Thome.

With the Indians in need of an open spot on their 40-man roster thanks to the signing of reliever Chad Durbin, Antonetti decided to ship Laffey to the Pacific Northwest and former skipper Eric Wedge. Laffey will grind once again.

“I’m completely content with where I’m at and how I’m coming along with Spring Training,” Laffey said last week. “I’m really just focusing on myself and taking care of the things I’ve got to do to get better.

He will now do that with Seattle.

The way things are shaping up, Josh Tomlin, Jeanmar Gomez, and David Huff are now in a three-man race for the fifth spot in the rotation. I still can’t see how Huff is going to be the guy. The Indians have seen what he has to offer already.

I was always a Laffey fan and think he got a raw deal here in Cleveland. Here’s hoping for heath and success in Seattle.

I agree with you about Laffey getting a raw deal. But I still had to laugh at “Laffey will grind once again.”

So I guess this means the Indians think Chad Durbin is their long reliever? Is Durbin a lefty? We freaking need some lefties.

Per Pure Rage Perez, he’s just going to throw left-handed now.

  • Marvin

I agree. Laffey deserved better. I hope he tears it up for seattle. Maybe than Chris Antonetti will realize his mistake..

    @ Pat

Sipp and R. Perez don’t count?

Durbin will only be the team’s long reliever if he pitches his way into that role. No team would spend even the measly salary that we did on Durbin for a long reliever.

Is there some little known MLB bylaw that says we can only make trades with Seattle? Or do you think all the other GMs are just better at screening their calls when they know we’ve got junk to peddle?

  • Reggie Ruckus

Great stuff TD. Agree with you completely. For whatever reason the Tribe couldn’t make up its mind on Laffey and unfortunately for him, his chance at a fresh start is ruined because he’s back with Willis and Wedge who screwed him up in the first place. I wish Laffey the best. He’ll either become a quality starter or end up like Jason Davis. Can’t decide because I never saw him in one role long enough to make up my mind about him.

Hoping this is the last vestige of flip-flopping young pitchers’ roles that started with Dany Baez. Hate that when they make a decision to re-make a guy they reverse themselves repeatedly.

Laffey seemed like such a gamer. Wonder if it’s a MLB service time issue, or he saw writing on the wall and asked out now so he had a fair shot to make another team’s roster.

How could we trade a pitcher who hasn’t one a Cy Young yet?

  • rob

We did jack him around but I was because he had no arm strength…I say good riddance to all the soft lefties…..

  • mgbode

@Mark – for whatever reason, Seattle seems to like our trash. let’s not ruin it by asking why.

  • GhostToMost

Im not a huge fan of Laffey, but he’s a much better pitcher than David Huff. I guess it pays to be a first round pick.

  • JJ From AK

    @mgbode

They don’t just love it, they worship it. Franklin Gutierrez is like a god out there. Then again he is a gold glover now.

I really hate this move. I have always liked Laffey and was actually at the ballgame Sunday to see him throw an inning. If i only woulda known it would have been my first and last time seeing him in a tribe uni…

  • Charles

Not sure why people think Laffey got a raw deal, unless you don’t look at anything besides ERA. The guy had serious problems staying healthy and had very weak peripherals. At certain points in 2010 his fastball couldn’t hit 85. He was a pretty poor bet for the future. It was great to move him for something while they still could.

  • mgbode

@JJ – and Choo should have been a silver slugger here (crawford, really?). no, they weren’t the same trade, but we got Choo for Broussard whereas we got Joe Smith and Valbuena for Franky-G. Who got more ripped off there?

  • NJ

People are missing on Gute? Really?!?!

Guy had a .303 OBP last year and an OPS+ 87. His defense is a positive, but I still wouldn’t want him and his ridiculous contract.

  • s-devo

Is it just me or does the Tribe have a boner for infielders in the Mariners farm system?
