2011 NFL Draft: Cleveland Browns Trade Sixth-Overall Pick to the Atlanta Falcons

On the clock without a player of perceived value in mind and a desire to add draft picks, the Cleveland Browns traded their sixth-overall selection to the Atlanta Falcons.

In return, Tom Heckert and Mike Holmgren received Atlanta’s first-round selection (27th overall), their second- and fourth-round picks in 2011 and their first-round selection in 2012.  The Browns could conceivably move back up in the first-round given their bevy of 2011 picks; either way, this move undoubtedly signals big-picture thinking from the Browns front office.

Update: Worth mentioning that if we go by the trade value chart, the Falcons would have to finish with the best record in the NFL for the trade to break even.  Anything less is tilted in the Browns favor.

Package some picks to trade up into the early 20′s for Quinn?

  • Poop

    I love this move!!!

  • Adam

Maybe we lock up the right side of the offensive line?

Browns have yet to address the trade in Berea – boys are working the phones hard.

This draft should be interesting, but would be more interesting if teams could trade players for picks. Hopefully the teams will improve upon their ability to get value for their draft position. There have been some real busts over the years, Leaf and Russell, just to name two. Over the past 15 years or so, Pittsburgh has gotten the most value for its picks and Detroit has gotten the least.

    Fricken sweet.

  • Chris

I like this a lot right now. I’ll love it when we see what we get…

  • Hype

@Rob last time we traded up for a guy named Quinn it didn’t work out so well…lol

  • Jim

I thought there were five legit players in this draft; and they went with the first five picks. Everyone else has legit question marks. No reason to reach at six, especially with so many holes to fill. Great move by the Brownies.

  • Mark

Someone should tell Eric Mangini that’s how you trade down.

  • Ike

Nice move by Heckert. #27 seems a bit extreme, but they can move back up and they’ve accumulated picks in the process. Well done.

  • TSR3000

Deron is that a portion of your final thesis? Wtf

  • http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com deron

    @TSR3000

    Lol! I wish.

  • Brad

I know it’s a bit of a buzzkill, but I see this as McCoy insurance. Give him another year to show his stuff, and if not, Browns have a lot of ammo for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

  • Harv 21

kind of hope this is the prelude to a move back up into a higher spot in the first while keeping most of Atlanta’s picks. If they don’t move back up, maybe implies they are looking at one specific guy or Heckert thinks the talent level just completely flattened out after the first 4 or 5 guys were gone.

  • 216in614

with the ability they showed last year to find talent outside the 1st round this is surely a heist.

  • http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com deron

Andrew Luck is the best prospect in a long time, but McCoy deserves to be given a fair shot this year. He showed some potential last year.

  • Mark

@Brad – the only way you get into the Andrew Luck sweepstakes is by being the worst team in the league. Let’s hope that’s not us. No team with the #1 pick next year is trading it. Would you trade the next Peyton Manning? That’s who Luck is.

  • Shaun

Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert should be jailed for larceny. Don’t like dropping all the way to 27, but you get an extra first.

  • Brad

    @deron @Mark

I really hope McCoy is the guy, and I think he is. Just saying, in the back of Holmgren’s mind, Luck probably factored in. But if McCoy isn’t the guy, we’ll have a very high pick, and four teams who I expect to be bad next year have picked QBs this year, meaning they won’t take Luck next.

  • Max

are we gonna draft dquan bowers . we took a risk on a shaky knee last year are we gonna do it again?

  • J

What the heck(ert) you talking about Quinn didn’t work out?? @hype…

You ever heard of Peyton hillis??????????

    THANK YOU!!

    Great move! Go browns!!

  • Haas

    @Brad

That is unless one of those teams gets a new HC. You see it a lot of times where a new HC means a new QB.

  • Matt S

Browns trade up to 21, maybe to get Bowers?

  • Smitz

Phil Taylor. He’ll be out of the NFL in three years.

  • Gren

    @ Brad

The Panthers have taken 2 QB’s with their first picks the past 2 years. Not saying it will happen again but, you never know.

  • mgbode

@Smitz – that’s crazy talk. Ted Washington is still in the league after how many years? the NFL always needs more beef in the middle.

we are molding our defense like Minnesota’s (or how Jauron had his in Chicago with Ted Washington and Traylor). big beef in the middle, faster/smaller DE’s and hopefully some good LB play. it’s a time tested strategy and we got our first piece.

I love the trade down. Can’t believe we were actually the beneficiary of a Ditka-style trade. We are one Matt Ryan injury away from a very high pick from them too :)

The trade up I was not all that happy about. I hate giving up the third when we still need DB/WR/DE/RT in that range. And, I would have loved Cam Jordan. But, I see where they are going with this pick and I doubt he would have lasted until 27.

Enjoy your season Browns! Haha. Holgrem called it in in Seattle what do you expect from him even older now?
