ESPN’s AFC North blogger James Walker discusses the Browns selecting a running back late in the draft, among other things, “It’s a very good possibility, Anton. The Browns relied on Peyton Hillis too much in the running and passing game last season, and as a result he got hurt late in the year. The Browns were really counting on 2010 second-round pick Montario Hardesty, but his history of knee injuries is a concern. Look for the Browns to take a scat-back type to complement Hillis in the middle or late rounds. One name to keep an eye on is Shane Vereen from Cal.” [James Walker/AFC North Blog]
Nino at Indians Prospect Insider goes around the Tribe farm system, including information about Akron starter Scott Barnes, “Akron’s left-hander had the strikeout feel on Thursday night against Reading. He struck out seven in his first start of the season last week, but was much more efficient this time out, going seven innings and only allowing two base runners. Barnes struck out a team high 127 and is well on his way to leading the team again. Barnes now leads the Eastern League in strikeouts and is now 1-0 on the young season.” [Nino/IPI]
David Wade has a nice read on Jackie Robinson Day, which was Friday across Major League Baseball, “On the field, his bold style of play was as radical to the league as the color of his skin. Robinson combined speed and power in ways we often see today, but were not as prevalent in the 1940s. He withstood intense pressure from white players (including many of those on his own team), managers and fans who hoped he would fail and prove their prejudiced assumption that black players could not cut it in the big leagues.” [The Hardball Times]
Our old friend Coco Crisp is bringing back the Afro which is comparable to a Tribe player of the past, Oscar Gamble, “In a move that caused both teammates and baseball fans to frizz out with excitement, the Oakland Athletics outfielder took out his trademark braids on Thursday, silly, because his “head was itching.” But what sprung up was something we’ve long waited for — an Afro that rivaled the one belonging to Gamble, the 1970s outfielder who made the style an art form through his iconic baseball cards.” [Big League Stew]
Dave Wooley over at Stepien Rules closes the year with one last Skyenga post, chronicling his ascension up the Cavalier scoring list, “For the 4th consecutive game, Skyenga posted a positive plus-minus, putting up a +8 against the Wiz. He also scored 6 points and grabbed 2 rebounds in 16 active minutes. Hopefully another solid performance like this will leave a sweet taste in the mouths of the Cavaliers front office heading into the offseason. The 6 points not only moved Skyenga past two more former Cavaliers, it also propelled him past the 300 point barrier in his career!!!” [Stepien Rules]
