Hot Start, Schmott Schtart: What do the Indians’ First Ten Games Mean?
April 12, 2011The 5-Hole: Blue Jackets News and Notes – 4/12/11
April 12, 2011That headline is fun to type. Here’s hoping it stays true for at least a while. These by the numbers pieces are not original, I know. Plenty have used this format in the past. It is however a good way to compile miscellaneous information I find interesting. So enjoy…
8– Consecutive wins for the Tribe. Don’t let anyone downplay the streak by trying to say the Indians are beating bad teams. All any team can do is beat the opponent in front of them. Everyone was on the Red Sox bandwagon before the season started. (35 of 44 ESPN writers picked them to win the World Series actually.) The Mariners aren’t going to win the west, but we also have wins against the White Sox and now Angels as part of the streak. Sweeps are great, but they can’t be expected. Nobody expected this kind of run from the Tribe after opening day anyway remember?
4– Home runs from American League co-player of the week Asdrubal Cabrera. It took 10 games for Astro-Cab to best his home run total of three from last season.
9– Total wins last April. The Indians have 17 chances to equal or best that mark.
6,7– Best winning streaks for the Indians all of last season.
.276– Cleveland’s team batting average. Good for 3rd in the American League.
13– Total home runs hit by Tribe batters this season. Also good for 3rd best in the AL.
1.71– Team ERA over the last seven games. Best in the majors.
70– Strikeouts thrown by Indians pitchers. Good for 5th in the AL. Not bad for a staff composed of a bunch of ground ball pitchers is it? Talbot leads the team with 11, but Carmona (9), Masterson (9), Carrasco (8), and Tomlin (7) are all right there with him.
7– Quality starts. Out of 10 games played? We’ll take that percentage all season long if you don’t mind!
3– Games this weekend. By no means does WFNY get any kind of money or favors from the Indians to promote ticket sales. Now, that we’ve got that straight I sincerely hope that this weekend’s series against the Orioles averages at least 20,000 fans. No matter how they finish this series against the Angels, they deserve some recognition for a job well done so far. Pack the place Friday night and let them hear your support.

Before this season started I remember talking with my friends about how we could go see so many more games this year, cuz we were going to suck and we could buy tickets for cheap on stubhub/etc.
Well now that we had to go and be good all of a sudden I don’t think I’ll be finding as many deals online as I did before. Either way I’m going to this Fridays game, GO TRIBE
Who are these people and what did they do with my tribe? I might have to put my money where my mouth is and buy a ticket, if they keep this up!
Seriously, where did Asdrubal’s power suddenly come from?
Coming into C-Town for the weekend and planning on heading down to the Jake on Sunday as long as there’s no moisture falling from the sky. I’m willing to bear the cold, but not sit there soaking in it…
3 – the number of attempts it took the devil to complete his side of the bargain and fix Hannahan’s bat for a month.
189- the number of minutes it takes Choo to fall asleep in the hotel each night as he keeps replaying Hannahan hitting liners and him hitting like the real Hannahan.
3,286 – the number of times Larry has said to Paul in the last 10 days “See? See? TOLD you I could figure this thing out!”
(That’s right, an unprovoked shot at the Dolans, just because we don’t wanna get rusty)
@3 did he get a new tatoo on the underside of his forearm? Maybe that’s where.
@6
he did and instead of ink they used HGH….in fact i think Pronk lent him his 2007 tattoo kit.
ZING!
Orlando Cabrera is taking credit for Asdrubal’s sudden ability to hit for power. O-Cab says A-Cab was putting on a clinic in BP and he told him he should bring it into the games with him. Seems to be working thus far. Indians have said the dude is in good shape this year and it shows.
One things for sure, you can’t put a number on the amount of fun this streak has brought. I hope we see good crowds this weekend but the weather was looking kinda iffy. Temps in the low 50’s and rain on Saturday.
@ClevelandFan14,
That question never has a good answer!
8847 – Number of fans at Progressive field Saturday when it is in the 40’s, windy, and rainy.
1 – The number of fans who will be watching the game from the comforts of his home at an unmentioned address in Aurora, Ohio.
Ill be there Friday and contemplating Saturday and/or Sunday. GO TRIBE!
already have tix for Sat, not looking like the weather is going o cooperate though
Lou Brown said it best: “We’re contenders now!”
I’ll be there tonight, one of my few chances to see the Indians in Southern California
back in the 90s the stadium would be half tribe fans
I went last night in Anaheim and there were a good amount of Indians fans. It was awesome to be around Cleveland fans again. Hoping to call of work and catch the late afternoon game tomorrow.
Cahill signs relatively team-friendly deal. And, actually eats up one of his FA years for sure doing it (1 year past arbitration).
Possibly, eats into a total of 3 years of FA years if the team picks up the options (which it will do if he pitches well).
Before people get into a Dolan-hate filled fit….very similar to the Carmona deal we signed in 2008 (Cahill is a better overall prospect IMO)

The A’s and their All-Star righty reached agreement Monday on a new five-year contract worth $30.5 million, which takes him through all three of his arbitration-eligible seasons and first potential year of free agency.
“It feels good. I came up with them and I’m just glad they gave me the opportunity to lock me up and I’m guaranteed to pitch for a while, so I couldn’t be happier,” Cahill said in Chicago before the A’s played the White Sox.
The 23-year-old Cahill is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts this season. He was the A’s opening day starter after winning 18 games last year with a 2.97 ERA in his second season in the majors. Cahill was a prime reason Oakland led the AL in ERA (3.56) and shutouts (17) in 2010 while holding opponents to a .245 batting average.
“We’ve seen already through nine games how critical the starting rotation is to our success,” assistant general manager David Forst said. “It’s something we talked about during the offseason, to ensure we keep these guys through the years we control and beyond.”
Cahill had been slated to earn $440,000 under the contract he agreed to on March 7. The new deal includes a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $500,000 this year, $3.5 million in 2012, $5.5 million in 2013, $7.7 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015.
Oakland has a $13 million option for 2016 with a $300,000 buyout. If that option is exercised, the A’s can exercise a $13.5 million option for 2017 with a $500,000 buyout. The 2017 option price would escalate to $14 million if Cahill finishes among the top two in Cy Young Award voting in any year from 2011-16.

Carmona deal from 2008
[quote]
http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/04/cleveland_indians_fausto_carmo.html
Carmona signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Indians. The deal includes club options for 2012, 2013 and 2014. If the Indians exercise those options, the deal is worth $43 million and could climb to $48 million with bonuses.
Asked what he was going to do with his new-found wealth, Carmona laughed and said, “I’m going to pay Luis Rivera the $20 he fined me when he was my manager in Class A Lake County in 2003.”
Rivera, who attended Thursday’s press conference, serving as Carmona’s interpreter, cracked up before delivering Carmona’s answer to reporters.
The guaranteed portion of the contract breaks down this way: $750,000 signing bonus; $500,000 in 2008; $2.75 million in 2009; $4.9 million in 2010 and $6.1 million in 2011.
The club options are worth $7 million in 2012; $9 million in 2013; and $12 million in 2014

Sure the Mariners are not good, but going on the West Coast and winning two series (hopefully!) is never easy and should never be taken for granted.
Let’s win the series tonight boys!
Man will I be happy when they get home. These 10 o’ clock starts are killers!
Cabrera has always had potential to be a Tulo-style power SS. I called it back in 2008 that he would be a face of this club. I was at his unassisted triple play game!
Roll Tribe! I believe we are one of two teams (Baltimore – almost as shocking) in the MLB undefeated on the road in 2011. Roll Tribe!
Nowhere else to put this, but… if they’re going to lose a game, I don’t mind a loss like tonight. Haren was just about unhittable, and Carmona still matched him just about all night. The game was never out of reach at 2-0 (save the feeling that Haren wasn’t giving in at all) nor did it feel like a sloppy slugfest.
You can’t win em all. Haren was nasty tonight. I’d still like to take the series tomorrow. Go Tribe!
P.S did anyone hear Pure Rage call into the Alan Cox show today? If not you should check out the site and listen to the podcast. Pretty entertaining.
You forgot a number.
4: Total number of errors committed by Indians to this point, 1st in AL and tied for 1st in MLB.
coming back to CLE in may for a wedding.. thinking of snatching up some Tribe Tix to the Reds game!
