Da Clip Show: Keeping an Eye on the Tribe’s AAA Squad – 5/3/11
May 3, 2011While We’re Waiting… Miller and Pomeranz, Taylor and Rubin, Plus Loving the Tribe
May 4, 2011More details as they become available, but Paul Hoynes of the PD broke the story this afternoon that Cleveland outfielder Shin Soo Choo was arrested early Monday on DUI charges. Choo is with the team in Oakland now, and is in the starting line-up for the night.
He is the second Indians’ player arrested for DUI this year. Austin Kearns is the other and his hearing in Kentucky was actually set for today.
GM Chris Antonetti had this to say, “We are aware of the incident with Shin-Soo Choo and have spoken to him about it. The Indians organization takes these issues very seriously and we are disappointed in the matter. We will continue to monitor the situation and we will not have any further comment at this time.”

Who are these guys? The 1986 Mets?!?
I kinda hope so a little.
I don’t know why but my first thought about this was “Choo drinks?”
We didn’t need something to break momentum right before a west coast trip. Why Choo do this to us?!
Does the MLB CBA allow for suspensions for DUI? I think it’s a joke after the crap Miguel Cabrera has pulled that he didn’t miss time. He was in a car drinking in front of the cop that busted him. Austin Kearns is a father and he got busted for DUI before camp. Now it’s Choo with a blood alcohol reported to be twice the legal limit. Using PED’s will get you suspended. PED’s make you a cheater. Driving Drunk can get you and someone else killed.
Shame on you Shin Soo Choo…that kinda rhymed. Very disappointing.
#4 disappointing yes…but it’s not baseball related. PED’s affect the game of baseball.
Dude, hire a driver when you go out. I’m sure there are plenty of fans willing to drive and keep their mouth shut if you want to go out for a few drinks on the town.
@2
Yeah that crossed my mind as well, he’s the last guy on the team I would expect to get a DUI. If you had told me that an Indians player was arrested for DUI, quite frankly, I would have guessed Shelley Duncan. Nothing against Shelley, but he just looks like a guy that enjoys the nightlife.
Hopefully this is a one time hiccup for Choo and Im glad nobody was injured as a result.
#7 hah agreed I woulda thought Duncan too.
@Titus
i am dumbfounded when i hear these reports for that very same reason. How in the heck can you not be able to afford a driver/cab if you are a person in Choo’s situation?
Not just afford it from the aspect of you make a ton of money but afford it for the fact that you will most certainly now be fined and have a tarnished reputation.
risk does not equal reward in this case.
I wonder if those Choo jerseys they’re giving away on the 21st will have a little pocket on the inside to hold a flask.
Hoynes just tweeted “Heard this: #Indians OF Shin-Soo Choo asked Sheffield Lake cops for directions to his house. When he drove away, he was arrested .”
@7 Agreed on Duncan. He has that same vibe Brian Giles gave off.
The NFL offers a program where players can get a ride if they are wasted…of course, Braylon Edwards failed to take advantage of it. You’d think MLB would offer a similar program.
I am very disappointed in Choo. I would hope that our guys would know better than to drink and drive, but sometimes people make mistakes. I personally would like to see a suspension here. Drinking and driving is very serious and I would like Major League Baseball to let players know that it will not be tolerated.
What was Choo doing in Shefftucky… err… Sheffield Lake? Where was he coming from or going to that required him to drive through that city? Seriously, there’s nothing there.
Choo lives in Avon Lake, and apparently he was hammered as he blew a .20 on a breathalyzer. If you were that smashed it wouldnt be difficult to make a wrong turn and end up in Sheffield Lake.

Well, my formative drinking years were largely spent in Avon Lake and I never once was so hammered as to drive into Sheffield Lake.
Well, not by accident, anyway. Apparently, Choo could drink me under the table.
.201? Well, he’s no Miguel Cabrera…
Seriously though, Choo is almost the last guy I’d expect on the team to see in this situation. At least according to the police report he complied entirely with the cops (not drinking during the stop, not arguing, not screaming “don’t you know who the f*** I am???”) or anything of the like. If Miguel got away so flipping easy, Choo better as well. No, it’s not okay. But unless they want to ignore the balance of justice, Choo shouldn’t do a whole lot of time for this.
Doesn’t his last name entitle him to free train rides?
Choo’s BAC > Cleanup Hitter Santana’s BA
I feel dirty now, but the joke needed to be made and I am disappointed noone else made it yet.
@mgbode, nicely played.
I am very disappointed. DUI is very serious and I hope he gets suspended (if true). Drink all you want fellas, just don’t put anyone elses lives’ at risk when you do it. I will still root for Choo, but hopefully he can learn from this and not make the same mistake again. Luckily no one was hurt.
Everybody I mean everbody knows if you drink don’t drive thru shefftucky grew up out their the cops out that way love to give tickets. But yea Choo was wrong oh well now he fits in with cleveland at least he didn’t accidentally pack a gun in his carry on. It will be interesting to see how acta handles this and keeps his team focused I hope
“Choo! Where is grandpa’s automobile!!!???”
Why were you drinking in Lorain?
One too many Sake got Shin-Soo in trouble, too bad one more Sake Sake couldn’t get him out of trouble…
After what has happened to Donte Stallworth I am suprised that athletes continue to do this.
… Yes because professional athletes are notorious for learning from others mistakes
C’mon, man. Lay off the Soju if you’re going to drive (or do anything at all, for that matter – stuff is craaazy).
Rumor that Choo has already agreed to attend the 72-hour Driver Intervention Program rather than the more onerous sentence of Scott Boras screaming at him for 24 straight hours.
@Harv – no way. Scott Boras just sent the team a binder that now compares Choo to Miggy Cabrera.
The cops knew he was drunk and waited for him to drive, so they could arrest him?
That said, he, and every athlete who drives under the influence, should be suspended at least a few games.
@ mgbode: mea culpa, right you are. In fact, the Boras powerpoint clearly demonstrates the correlation between binging and performance. FKA “The Mick Effect,” where piercing headache and moderate nausea reduce peripheral vision and focus all concentration on the seams of the ball.
@30
From what I read, I kinda get the feeling that the cops knew he had been drinking from the start, but were trying to cut him a break because hes Shin Soo Choo.
According to what I read they didn’t “detect the odor of alcohol” until the 3rd time he spoke to the same officer. It wasnt until he started weaving that they made him submit to a breathalyzer. Seems a bit fishy to me. Why would they follow him if they didnt think something was up?

@33
I shouldnt be lauging at that, but I am! Well done.
