Well, games like last night on ESPN sure will help with this- “Cabrera certainly has the numbers on his side. Among those listed at the position on the ballot, Asdrubal has the second-best batting average, while providing the most runs scored, home runs and runs batted in. In fact, the shortstops with the most comparable numbers to Cabrera are Jhonny Peralta and Alexei Ramirez.
But even with Cabrera’s excellent stat line for a shortstop, he isn’t leading the majors in home runs or flirting with .400 – those are the kinds of things that grab national attention and ensure that fans on the opposite coast know of your player’s All-Star worthiness. Truth is, outside of the AL Central, fans probably still don’t know much about Asdrubal, nor care that he is worth a starting spot on this year’s team.” [Me/StillWFNY]

“Since Acta’s arrival at the start of 2010, he and pitching coach Tim Belcher, along with bullpen coach Scott Radinsky, have helped turn the Tribe’s pitching staff into one of the top units in baseball. In a year when the American League Central appears to be up for grabs, Cleveland’s timing could not have been better. “We’re leading the American League in victories,” said Indians closer Chris Perez, who laughed as he pondered that reality. “That’s crazy.”
Acta never thought such a prospect was far-fetched. But performing at such a high level this year? “To tell you the truth,” Acta said, “it has come quicker than I was expecting it.” [Bastian/MLB.com]

Good reminder of where these guys came from- “This mutt of a club is living proof. Three-fifths of the starting rotation was imported from the East — specifically the Red Sox, Phillies and Rays. The closer came from the Cardinals. The speedy leadoff man and slugging first baseman were both Brewers. The slick-fielding shortstop and the five-tool right fielder were both acquired from Seattle. Even the two holdovers from the ’07 starting lineup were developed elsewhere before they were bred in Tribe colors. For the purposes of illustration and illumination, take a look at how the major pieces of the 2011 team came together, in order of arrival to the organization:” [Castrovince/MLB.com]

Mark Titus (former Buckeye basketball player) blogs about the OSU football mess- “So to recap, I have no facts, I don’t know what I’m talking about, and in no way should I be taken seriously. All I’m saying is that I won’t be surprised in the slightest if the NCAA digs up some serious dirt on the Ohio State football team (especially the stuff surrounding the discounted and/or free cars) because it’s something I’ve been scratching my head over for years. So if you’re an OSU football fan, I’d suggest not getting your hopes up. There’s a solid chance that this won’t end well.” [Club Trillion]

“This week we stay in Cleveland to take a look at another pending free agent: Ray Edwards. The starting defensive end has been solid for the Minnesota Vikings. Edwards recorded 16.5 sacks over the past two seasons in Minnesota, despite sharing the spotlight with talented Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. Now Edwards, 26, will be looking to cash in and should be one of the top free agents this summer. Cleveland certainly has the money to spend and a big need on the defensive line. The Browns will switch to a 4-3 scheme this season and recently spent their first two draft picks on defensive tackle Phil Taylor and defensive end Jabaal Sheard.
Could Edwards be the final piece to Cleveland’s rebuilt defensive line? The Browns started the offseason with little on their front four. But a group with Edwards, Sheard, Taylor and Ahtyba Rubin would be a young and talented nucleus to build around for years to come.” [Walker/AFC North Blog]

Ray Edwards would be nice. That would give us solid back-up options with Mitchell and Bernard along 2 hopefully good starters in Sheard and Edwards. Also, Edwards and Rubin are both young enough to make the unit last a for a few years assuming these rooks turn out.
The Club Trillion Post is interesting. As a commenter on Titus’ blog already mentioned…maybe some of OSU’s problems could have been avoided if one single person at the school was willing to recognize that OSU footballers driving brand new cars all over campus didn’t “pass the sniff test.”
Ray Edwards and Sidney Rice are the 2 FAs I would want the most. But, we need to make sure we don’t have 2010 FA rules to make it happen.
@Rick – Asdrubel is going to be pleasently surprised with votes because I would think an inordinate amount of fans know him specifically from Fantasy Baseball. At SS where there are little options, Asdrubel has been ridiculous.
