Aeros Consider Name Change, Giving Away Seats for Life

We told you at the beginning of the season that new COO Jim Pfander was determined to make Akron the best AA franchise possible, and that everything was being evaluated and improved where necessary. Apparently that includes the name Aeros as well.

The club is giving away some nice prizes to get your input-

Grand prize winner will receive a pair of season tickets for life, team jacket and baseball cap and ceremonial first pitch for 2012 Home Opener. Four runner-up winners will receive team jacket and baseball cap.

You can suggest a name, or simply vote to keep the Aeros current moniker. I don’t see anything wrong with the Aeros name as is, but perhaps there is something more appropriate? What would you suggest? The contest ends today, so go to the site and enter for your chance to win.

And please, nobody’s going to name the team after anything that has to do with LeBron.

    Akron Antlers
    Akron Ants
    Akron Antithesis

Keep the alliteration alive. I will now go to the website and put in my real suggestion and when I win and throw out the first pitch it will be a knuckleball.

  • Shamrock

    Akron James or Akron AsCloseAsClevelandWillGet2ATitle

  • NJ

Keep the name. Just ditch the cartoony, third-grade logo.

Also, am I the only one bothered that land locked Columbus has a team with a nautical motif?

  • Andrew

They should be the Columbus Landlubbers. It’s more fitting.

    The Akron Attitude

  • ClemJax

I’m usually for going with something that makes reference to a city’s background or history…but in this case, while “Akron Rubbers” would have practically unlimited marketing potential, it might not keep the family friendly atmosphere around.

  • Garry Owen

    @ NJ:

Does it bother you that Columbus is a land-locked city named after a famous mariner?

(I get your point, though. The “Clippers” name was a reference to the fact that they were the Yankees farm team (i.e., “Yankee Clippers”) in a city named after a famous mariner. For that Yankee connection alone, they should change the name.).

  • Du

    I have the winner…sorry Nate:

    Name plays on:

    History
    Attitude
    Toughness
    Unique yet familiar

    BLIPMS.

I meant to write ‘blimps’ but like BLIPMS better.

  • jimkanicki

    alliteration?

    akron admiral akbars.

    boom.

  • NJ

@7 – I thought the name dated back to when they were a Pirates farm team? But I’m not up on my minor league lore so I could be wrong.

  • http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/ Rick

For the record, the Aeros name was a nod to Akron’s aerospace background.

  • Garry Owen

    @ 11:

Well, you could be right. My reasoning was merely deductive. I’m also not a minor league history buff (but I like my explanation better). We’re going to have to defer to the experts.

  • Garry Owen

    @ NJ:

So, according to Wiki, you are absolutely right. It was the pirates, which frankly makes no sense to me. I sit corrected.

  • mgbode

@Rick – I thought the owner was just a big Aerosmith fan.

  • NJ

Since we’re talking about the Pirates, the fact that it makes no senses makes perfect sense.

  • NJ

    sense, not senses

  • Right Side

    How about the Canton-Akron Indians?

  • theherd10

    #18 – FTW

  • Ben

I say Akron Blast for old times sake…

  • Brendon

    Akron Rubbers (Giggity)

  • LaundroMat

A Clipper is a ship and a Pirate likes to take those.

I just hope they don’t go with an animal name. So overdone.

  • mgbode

Since it’s a farm team and the best names are a bit hokey, I would highly suggest:

Arkon Derby (with a soap box derby car on the hat as the logo). Winners all around.

  • MattyFos

    Canton-Akron Indians

  • T

    Akron Atomic-Ants

  • Garry Owen

Don’t think many pirates employed clippers. About 100 years too late for that.

  • Julie

Why change the name at all?
