June 30, 2011American League All-Star Team Prediction
June 30, 2011Quite a battle from yesterday in the Favorite Cavalier category. Anderson Varejao came from behind to overtake Kyrie Irving as the player on the Cavs you most want to see.
Today we hand out two more awards. The first is a staff award in the category Best (non big 3) Cleveland Sports Team. There were two great candidates for this award this year. The first is the Cleveland State Men’s Basketball team. Falling a little short of the NCAA Tournament, Norris Cole and the Vikings advanced to the second round in the NIT before falling to the College of Charleston. CSU started the season on a 12 game winning streak, and finished the regular season 25-7. In the end, 3 losses to Butler (which doesn’t look too bad now) and back to back losses to Old Dominion and Milwaukee kept the Vikings away from the big dance.
The second candidate is the Lake Erie Monsters. The Monsters had a great regular season, finishing 44-28 with 3 OT losses and 5 ties. They had a 3-1 lead on Manitoba in the playoffs before dropping 3 straight. During the playoffs, the Monsters out-drew the Indians for a game. That’s fairly impressive for a minor league hockey team in Cleveland.
And the winner of the WFNY Best Non-Big 3 Cleveland Sports Team is-
The Lake Erie Monsters.
Monsters games had the Q rocking by the end of the season. Very impressive. Good team, good atmosphere.
Now it’s on to the readers’ choice award for the day. You probably saw this coming, but I think it will be quite a battle. The category today is Favorite Current Cleveland Brown.

If you were including the non-Cleveland non-Big 3 sports teams covered by WFNY, you’d have to throw the Clippers in there as well….huge roster depletion and still AAA World Series Champs
This is a tough one. Cribbs has obviously been the favorite for the past few years, but with the 2010 rookie class contributing so much both on and off the field, it would be tough to not vote for Haden or Colt… And of course, we do have the most blue collar player to ever don the cover of Madden coming off of his best season yet. This team reflects the city so well.
I went with Haden(not Hadden) because of the Civic pride award. He’s the type of guy that the city, not just the team, needs. From attending Cavs and Tribe games, sporting all the gear, and i mean all, to sponsoring Little League teams and attending the NBA Lottery with BIG NICK, this guy is the perfect role model and absolute stud corner. If there is one player who spends his entire career in brown and orange, I want it to be Haden.
…or JT
Just a quick question, would this only be for Cleveland area teams or in the suround areas, such as Akron? I see you have CSU, which is great, but why not Akron’s men’s soccer team, if I remember correctly they did win the NCAA Division 1 championship. As much as CSU basketball team did this season and by no means was their season a bad one, I would think that Akron’s mens soccer deserves some “love” (and yes I know it’s soccer), but for what they did on the field, to me is better then what CSU did in basketball.

Jake, well said. Nice job. I agree completely.
Joe Haden. Only one D in his name though.
It was a hard choice, I love Cribbs, but TJ Ward is my new favorite, mostly because he plays my favorite position.
man, this is like picking your favorite kid 🙂 you can see the positives in each one of them.
i had to stick to my roots and go with a big ugly. but even then there are 3 of them on the list. man, I love Joe Thomas and how he solidifies one of the most important positions for us. I love how Alex Mack has given us another huge piece at keeping a solidified OL. But, when it comes down to it, I like watching defense more than offense and I think Rubin is a monster.
I’m glad I voted that way too as I was the first and he deserves at least one “Attaboy” (what my sons now call him which derived from a thread on this site)
We didn’t include the Akron or Columbus teams in this award. Thanks for the reminders of the typo on Haden.
