“While it is true that LHP generally tend to develop slower as pitchers – all of which is the reason that there is so much excitement for the 23-year-old LHP Scott Barnes who, in his last 6 starts in AAA has posted a 1.80 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and (this is the important part) 44 K in 35 IP as he’s looking to more than just a PTBNL – Carrasco is thriving with less than 150 IP under his belt, meaning that the maturation that was often thought to be unattainable for him to harness his raw talent may actually be within his grasp.
Obviously, Carrasco is going to have his days when he looks like a 24-year-old with less than 150 MLB IP under his belt, but the Indians unquestionably have a building block in their rotation and – this is important – he is a young pitcher whose workload has been built up to the point that he should be under no great inning restrictions this year. By that I mean that Carrasco threw 173 1/3 innings in 2009 between the Minors and MLB and tossed 201 2/3 innings last year between Cleveland and Columbus. To this point, he’s toed the slab for 79 innings, meaning that the Indians shouldn’t have to worry about keeping inning counts down for Carrasco – which could be a major factor in the team’s ability to stay in the AL Central race.” [The DiaTribe]

The NFL collective bargaining agreement is in draft form at least, and according to multiple reports 4 year veterans could be eligible for unrestricted free agency. Here’s some players that could benefit from that change. [Mac’s Football Blog]

Ouch. Big time O-Line recruit ditching OSU- “This is a big blow for the Buckeyes as it seemed Kalis was headed towards being the “Mike Brewster of this year’s class” and was going to help Luke Fickell recruit other players interested in playing for the Buckeyes. On top of this, offensive line is the greatest need for OSU at this time and to stab the knife in the back one more time, it appears that Michigan is now the leader for his services.
The Buckeyes are still in the mix to land Kalis, but after ultimately de-committing twice, I just can’t see him ending up in Scarlet and Gray. This move could potentially open the door for other elite recruits to jump ship, and things may not head upwards for the Buckeye recruiting efforts until the final sanctions are levied and a permanent head coach is put in place.” [Eleven Warriors]

Obviously celebrating his big WFNY Cleveland Sports Award from yesterday- “Haden’s latest goodwill gesture hit Twitter Tuesday afternoon. Haden invited fans to Sushi Rock in the eastern suburb of Beachwood at 4:15 for what he called “lunch.” Haden, who showed up alone, ended up picking up the tab for 55 grateful customers, some of whom went online to thank him later.” [Jackson/FSO]

Nice gesture by Haden, but why is he buying lunch for wealthy folk in an affluent suburb like Beachwood?!
@humboldt way to find a way to be negative and bring in some class warfare too!
I doubt all 55 that showed up were actually beachwoooders
Can’t believe that he would only buy lunch for raw fish eaters.
Joe Haden is great. Seems to really enjoy hanging-out with the fans. Knows how to work for sure.
According to that article on unrestricted free agents, Eric Wright would be an unrestricted free agent. I didn’t see Joe Thomas’ name in the article, though, and they were both from the same class. Why is that?
I think first rounders usually get a year or two more on that first contract than the second rounders, Robbie.
Not sure though.
no draft page today, so i’ll put this here:
very interesting… http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AqjqAVHwqjj1IBDftDtxP905nYcB?slug=aw-wojnarowski_tony_parker_spurs_nba_draft_062111
now, I don’t want the Cavs to trade either of their picks for Tony Parker. I’m thinking more long-term than that. But, I could see Utah flipping the #3 pick to SA for Parker. the only problem is that SA would have to sign off on taking back Devin Harris and Raja Bell (or a similar package).
either way, that’s bad news for us as they are likely targeting a big man (they have some good young guards).
Ok, found the rub and it’s very unlikely to happen this way:
Marc Stein: San Antonio, as I hear it, wants to attach Richard Jefferson to any Tony Parker deal. Can’t see that appealing to Raps. Or Kings.
I just had another thought after readin some nba draft articles. What if the Cavs take Williams 1st with the thinking there will be less teams to contend with to trade for Irving from Minny? Really, how many have we heard want the 2 so they can draft Williams? And Irving has only 1 workout scheduled (Cleveland). Who else would the Cavs be competing with to trade with Minny for Irving?
@bobby – there’s a reason you have heard only about teams wanting the 2 so they can draft williams. it’s because Irving is #1 on everyone’s board and they know the Cavs will take him.
