Browns vs. Eagles – Browns Bad, But Phil Taylor!
August 26, 2011It’s a Thomecoming, Cleveland Style. Get Your Tickets from WFNY
August 26, 2011Jim Thome is the Indians’ all time leader in home runs. Here is one of my favorites.

And for good measure, here’s what we need him to do in the 6 remaining games against the Tigers.

“I have always thought that cutting down on your swing is a misnomer, you adjust your thinking blahblahblahblahblahblah …”
Tim McCarver at his most precious, my-inside-insights-get-good-to-me worst.
Anyone remember the flap Thome took over the bat flip?
Hey Dave Winfield!
How many times will Thome “adjust his goods” while pointing the bat at the pitcher’s head. One thing I will never forget about Jim is how he does that.
Ahh, the good ole days before his “rock” wanted out of C-town!
5 wins in the last at-bat IN ONE HOMESTAND?! As fun as this year’s team has been in that regard, the squads in 94 and 95 did it better than anyone I can recall.
Did his “rock” really want out of Cleveland? Or did people just assume that so they could vilify her?
BTW, that property in Aurora is still in her name. And if I remember correctly they continued to live there in the offseason for a few years after he left the Indians.
Just sayin…
I cannot believe that vitriol that has been directed against Thome. I used to say that I would never leave Cleveland (and really meant it), but ended up chasing a better opportunity and paycheck to Pennsylvania. Am I still welcome to come back?
I know that a lot of people were “deeply wounded” by Thome’s departure back when they were 12, but … really? Really???
I admire the guy for (among a bunch of other things) being willing to waive his no-trade clause to come back to Cleveland and a very tenuous winning opportunity. I’ll bet that in the next month (hopefully two) he will demonstrate that he is a bigger man than seemingly half of his new (old) fanbase.
I suppose you all will welcome LeQuitter back too in 8 years.
Oh hear we go . . . the equivocation game. Jim Thome = LeBron James = Art Modell = Hitler = Jim Tressel.
I suppose if I don’t want my emotional state to be governed by a stupid athlete (which I don’t), sure, I’ll welcome him back. He did nothing to me.
“To err is human, to forgive, divine.” Not sure what condemning or holding a grudge is, but I think I’d rather be the one who either errs or forgives.
I love a good cat fight!
@8- The fact that you still call him LeQuitter makes me take your opinion much less seriously.
@ Humpy — Good points.
@ Garry — Here’s the thing: if he hadn’t said anything close to “rip the shirt off my back” and instead just said “so long and thanks for all the fish” when he left, I think we’d all be alright with it. But he didn’t; he made some insane promise which he broke. He said it; no one solicited it from him. So yes, he has to deal with the consequences. Not even LeBron ever said he was going to stay. He was “smart” enough not to over-promose; he is and always will be a self-centered @$$clown for “The Decision,” but at least he didn’t lie. That’s the point.
Gary
Well maybe I think those who forgive are weak willed and small minded.
should we forgive osama? why do you hate America?
It seems that the people who haven’t forgiven/forgotten don’t really have a problem with those who have.
but dayum the “forgivers” sure need to make everybody else “get over” it.
seems like they need some sort of validation.
Jim Thome is a Lying D-bag, always will be.
You can forgive him if you wish, I choose not to.
You forgot Joey Belle & Manny. I just sayin’ when we need him most, during the rebuild, he bolted for greener pastures. How much money does one need? The FO threw tons of it and a long term contract at him, but he refused. “You would have to tear the jersey off my back before I leave Cleveland” Sound familiar?
“Wahoo What a finish!” may be one of the best sports films of the 90’s
Boy that video takes me back. Love Jim Hamilton calling a Jim Thome home run. That was my sports childhood right there.
It may just be me, but it feels like the world is right now, Jim Thome is home.
Sorry Tom Hamilton, DUHHH
@ bobby:
Good observations and situational awareness. /sarc
Just don’t cheer for him when he hits a HR, okay, guys? I’ll hold you to it.
@Humpy If we keep Thome, we are cash strapped and the rebuild wouldn’t be as likely to happen… you silly goose. I like how you guys define Thome by one thing he said… like you’ve never misspoke or ever had a moment in your life where you said one thing and then ultimately did another. You self-righteous, pious son of a gun. Why, i bet you don’t even hold yourself to the same standard as Thome, anonymous poster guy!!
What fun is live if you can’t build straw men and construct logical fallacies.
like you did here:
“the equivocation game. Jim Thome = LeBron James = Art Modell = Hitler = Jim Tressel.”
I expect to be asked to leave the stadium as I call him a lying piece of garbage from the cheap seats.
I am sure the “forgivers” will be bothered and call the usher.
Like I said you can be the bigger/better man if you like.
I am holding onto my grudge
Gary
Deal! If & when he does, don’t hold back, let me have it.
So who’s looking for validation here?
All this over Jim Thome? I loved those 90s teams too, but wow. He did what athletes often do–looked out for himself first. It’s a story we’ve seen time and again, and will see in the future. Hate him for it, forgive him for it, whatever–that’s every individual fan’s call. But the rhetoric on both sides of this is all just a bit nauseating, IMO.
Sorry, B-bo. I just think that this is a valid discussion for Cleveland fans to be having – as this sort of thing largely defines what “Cleveland fan” is viewed as outside of Cleveland. Maybe this is the way we should act and be viewed; maybe not. (And I have no ill will toward anyone on this site, if my previous remark was rather cutting – apologies).
I’ll quit, though, if it makes people more comfortable. I do need to mow my lawn before Irene comes to visit.
@Garry Hey, it’s a public forum, and I know there are topics that grind my gears from time to time, so I’m not here to tell anyone how they should conduct themselves. Passionate fans are part of why I’m proud to root for these teams. The tone here simply struck me as unseemly, but to each his own. I have no doubt I’ll need to check myself here from time to time.
My bigger concern is WHY AREN’T WE TALKIN’ MORE ABOUT THESE VIDEOS OF JIMMER MASHIN’ TATERS?!?!
I just can’t wait to see him smash some more. I think this was a great move. A healthy Jim Thome beats a DL Travis Hafner every day of the week, and twice during a double header.
Agree totoally with the Thome-vs- DL’d Hafner point. And I don’t even mind the nostalgia side of the move, though Thome wasn’t my favorite back in the day. Ultimately I just wish we were closer in the standings, so that making a run was more likely than it is right now. There’s still a veeeeery slim chance, but it is remote.
I also “totally” agree. This work day needs to end…
I truly think that Thome meant what he said. But, he also wanted to protect himself and his family. He wanted the extra year guaranteed and Philly was willing to do that while we werent. While its easy for us to sit back and say 74 (or however much it was) million is plenty and he should sit back and be happy with that, but the true fact is thats not how life works. If you had a job in NEO offering 74,000 and in a different city offering 90,000+ its an easy choice. But with Thome we’re talkin millions, not thousands.
To equate Thome to James is ignorant. The tribe were heading into a rebuild. They just traded ace Bartolo Colon and were clearly ready to rebuild. The young guys were moving in, and not to mention we brought in Hafner who has out-performed Thome since. Next we have LBJ, who had a FO willing to spend anything and do anything to bring a championship to Cleveland. They were coming off of back-to-back 60 win seasons and prime for another attack. they tried to bring in some younger role players to help James but he held the franchise hostage by not agreeing to stay longer. LBJ had the Cavs at his palm and could control anything that happened and at once he left leaving them in disarray. IMO Thome was not part of the plans for the Tribe and they low-balled him so he would be made out to be the devil many of you portray him as. Its easy to see fault in a player and not in a club when we speak in terms none of us understand (millions upon millions of dollars).
All of these butthurt losers that are mad that their boyfriends, Jim Thome/Lebron James etc., didn’t want to date them anymore is the reason the national media has a field day with our fan base.
To any one of the Thome haters out there, if an employer comes to you and offers you twice what your being paid or what your current employer is offering, you are telling me you would stay?
If that is true, you are better people than me. I like my job, but if that finanical opportunity is out there, damn skippy I will be taking it, if it is $80,000 or $80,000,000. Hell I did it, last year and moved to Chicago. I am a bad person for doing what I had to do to further my career and give my family a better life?
Wow, what selfish thing to do, think of yourself and your family. The averge span of an employee with a company now is about 2-4 years before said person leaves for what probably is greener pasture.
I know pro athletes are not everyday people and what they make could be considered downright sinful, but they are still people and are going to take what they can get like every other person on the planet. This is bigger than sports, this is life.
Is bobby arguing with himself or are there two bobbys on here??
definitely 2… maybe i should think of a name change….
(sigh)
ok, who’s up for another dance-off. But this time Denny Terio will not be “coincidentally” dropping by to bail anyone out. You’re in ’til the music stops.
If the Indians sign LeBron James to play centerfield, and he helps them make the playoffs, Ill forgive him too.
That bobby is not me.
the difference between 74 and 100 million is non-existent.
the difference between 7 mil and 10 mil is significant.
If 74 million dollars is not enough for you and your family to live comfortably for the rest of your lives (multiple generations of extended family) then NO amount of money is enough. Because you are stupid with money.
and to try to equate that with a blue/white collar Joe middle class anguishing over uprooting his family and moving for the Difference between 74 and 90 grand is laughable. and no the choice is not obvious… have you bothered to look at what a “Westlake” type home/suburb costs in Chicago or Philly or Boston or LA or San Fran…… or what rents look like?
you will be POORER even though you make more money.
@ Ghost:
LeBron’s not available, but I hear Art Modell plays a mean hot corner (and hits with power). Good?
this is like people complaining about drafting Alex Mack instead of CMIII. let’s just be happy that things worked out pretty good for us and move on okay?
Garry….lawn, Irene’s on her way. Be safe this weekend.
2 things- who said bigger city? I didnt mention Chicago or Philly or NY. Also, More money is still more money. You cannot possibly comprehend the difference because its just 2 huge numbers to you. (purely guessing, please do not take this as an attack)- It is absolutely impossible to argue about that amount of finances when you have never had it. Its easy to say “o wow 25 mil isnt a big difference, they cant handle money if they cant handle 74 mil” so on and so on, but you dont know where the money goes. Who’s to say he didnt donate more to charities or some other non-profit organization. — I am not saying thats what happened, but its unfair to judge what you do not know.–
Okay, Humpy. Between you and bobby (if it really is bobby), and the commie peaceniks Harv and B-bo, I can take a hint. I know when I’m not wanted. I’m out. (That was all a joke, guys.)
(We’ll be fine – far inland PA. The panicked weather creatures here see an apocalypse of apocalyptic proportions, but I’m guessing a couple of power outage days, some roof damage, a tree or 10 down, some deep water, and some really tall grass thereafter. We’ll be fine. The folks further east and south are in for it, though.)
BOTH guys named bobby
say, stay safe.
Why am I arguing about this??? I never was a that big of a Thome fan to begin with. Nothing against him or anyone. I suck. đ
Fast forward to 2019 when Lebron returns to the north shore looking for his first ring…this site will actually explode.
Agreed, one final dance-off for all the marbles. Because if we’re going to have Thome hater/apologist debates for the rest of the season then I’m going to start watching soccer.
the best part of this whole debate is that the signing has no relevancy what-so-ever on the tribe making the playoffs this year.
we signed him, we’ll end the season in third place, he’ll retire a wahoo, he’ll go into the HOF as a wahoo, end of story.
christopher head hurt. he go sleepy now.
A pants off dance off?
Loser is banished from the Island?
To all the Thome-haters:
I said “I love you” to my ex-wife too. Many times. And then I divorced her. 50% of you did, or will do, the exact same thing.
LOL…get over your “jersey” butthurt. It’s silly. Juvenile, even.
@DC you say I am “butthurt”
I say
you lack character and integrity.
And just because you are a *d-bag doesn’t mean everybody else is.
50% of us didn’t do what you did.
* is for divorce – bag I can’t help if you read something else into that.
