Hafner Could be Shut Down for Season

The Indians sent trainer Lonnie Soloff to talk to the media about Travis Hafner’s injury, and the report isn’t good. Hafner is in a walking boot and may require surgery, which would effectively end his season.

Hafner has suffered a strained peroneal tendon in “plantar aspect” of his right foot. They are currently seeking other medical options, which would keep Hafner from undergoing surgery until the season was finished. In other words, they are trying to find a way to minimize the pain in his foot so that he can function on the baseball field.

This does not sound like good news at all. At the very least, Hafner is out for the next two weeks, which are probably the biggest two weeks of the Indians’ season. The team could be out of the race altogether by the time Hafner would be ready to return.

In the past for seasons, injuries have prevented Travis from playing at least 95 games (less than 60% of the team’s games) three times, despite not playing a single game in the field. His production during this four year span- 45 home runs and 172 RBI.

Soloff did mention that Grady Sizemore could be ready to start taking batting practice with the team by the end of the week, if everything continues to progress. He would not put a time table on Sizemore’s rehab starts.

Currently the Indians have Sizemore, Hafner, Carrasco, Crowe and Kipnis on the DL. Shin Soo Choo is not with the team due to the birth of his child. Shelly Duncan has returned to the team.

    Thome come Home…e?

    @Shamrock

mark this day on both our calendars…I agree with you 100%.

This to me is last months post finally appearing today.

  • corey

Since when have Sizemore and Hafner been hanging out with Greg Oden?

  • The Conductor

Maybe I’m old school, but come on dude, rub some dirt on it.

  • JM

I also agree with Shamrock and Christopher. Bring on Thome.

  • mgbode

the real question here is “at what cost”

we don’t want to strengthen a division rival for a month of Thome despite the nice storyline. very marginal prospect is all we should be considering here.

  • Harv 21

What kind of batting coach lets so many hitters get injured?

  • Harv 21

    (scrolling, scrolling)

“Russell Baker, Russell Bradford … AHA!!”

  • Ghost To Most

Hideki Matsui cleared waivers, so thats another option if we cant swing a deal for Thome.

  • Believelander

    Thome on waivers. #JustSayin

Perez had 32 pitches last night. I understand not giving him the save opportunity today in the 9th and letting Masterson try to finish it out (he was under 100 pitches).

but, why bring in Perez once Masterson was in trouble? he’s not used to entering with guys on base, he’s not good at keeping guys off base, and we have a ton of guys in the bullpen more equipped for that particular situation (save situation or no save situation).

    just makes me mad.

Carrera/Cabrera/Choo/Santana – not a great chance to get a run back, but at least we have a punchers chance here.

  • Ghost To Most

Runners at 1st and 3rd with no out, I said to myself “how are we going to blow it this time?”

    :D

  • mgbode

as did I, but Choo silenced those fears. Chris Perez for the ‘win’ :)

  • Ben

You can’t kill this team off…

  • Anthony

That was HUGE. Now please, let’s carry that momentum into the nightcap.

Brad Penny vs David Price today. Let’s pick up a game and a half.

  • mgbode

Masterson is now 10-7 with a 2.83 ERA. He ended up giving up 5 runs, but 2 came in the 9th when he was obviously gassed (though his pitch count was manageable).

He’s given up 3 or fewer runs in 21 starts this season (in games with enough IP to get the win). He only has wins in 9 of those games.

He’s given up 2 or fewer runs in 19 games. He only has wins in 8 of those games.

He’s given up 1 or fewer run in 10 games. He only has wins in 6 of those games.

He’s given up 0 runs in 3 games. He is 1-1 in those games.

I would prefer Matsui over Thome. I think we should just go all-Asian.
