Best Uniforms in Sports

I make my opinions known on uniforms quite often on the site, and so I thought I’d take a moment and mention my favorite uniforms (non-Cleveland of course). It is hard nearly impossible to completely take emotion out of the equation when ranking uniforms, at least for myself. So even though teams like the Yankees may have the most classic look out there, there is just no way I’m putting them in my top three. Sorry New York. Can’t get past the gag reflex when looking at the NY.

So without further adieu, and with one more brief reminder that these are just my opinions on uniforms, I present my top three looks for the NFL, MLB and NBA. (Remember, Cleveland uniforms were ineligible.)

NFL

This one may have been the easiest to decide. There is much more room for creativity with a football uniform I think. More flexibility to mix and match team colors as well between the pants, jersey and helmet.

1. San Diego Chargers- Great uniforms. I’ve always liked them, but when they went to the white helmet I was hooked. The light blue accent surrounding the lighting and numerals is fantastic. Just enough to really make them pop. White tops with blue pants, blue tops with white pants or even the alternate light blue uniforms are all great. Plenty of contrast, but with colors that work well together. You have to love the lighting as a logo. It is very versatile. Use it as an accent or the main image. Well done.

2. Buffalo Bills- What an improvement. The Bills have had some serious uniform disasters over the years, but the new look for this season is tremendous. Maybe I’m a sucker for the white helmet look, but the new Bills’ lid is excellent. Classic stripes and football font for the numbers complete the look.

3. Chicago Bears- Classic. These uniforms are as simple as you can get, and yet just scream football. The white jerseys are nice, but the dark home look is the one that puts Chicago in my top three. Great color combination, and classic helmets.

NBA

I have to admit, basketball uniforms in general don’t really excite me. Cleveland’s home uniforms during the LeBron era were the best basketball jerseys I’ve seen. Loved the original font for the script Cavaliers. Awesome colors. Then they had to go with the ketchup and mustard look. Sigh.

1. Portland Trailblazers- Love the all-black uniforms. The white and red stripes are so uniquely Portland too. Nobody else has been able to pull off such a radical stripe. Not in love with the slanting font, but it is at least readable, which is not always the case.

2. Philadelphia 76ers- Particularly the red uniforms. Going back to the classic arch block lettering and red, white and blue was such a smart move. Those Iverson era black uniforms with the crazy looking sixers logo was just too much. They get the nod over other classic uniforms like the Celtics and Bulls because, well they are the Celtics and Bulls.

3. Golden State Warriors- This one is my dark-horse favorite. It kind of goes against the grain of what I love about uniforms, but it just works. Perhaps part of the reason is because they ditched that hideous old look. It is really hard to see the numerals on the front, but incorporating them into the logo is just fun. It makes each player both part of the team and unique at the same time. Plus, the bridge design is a nod to the past and the city. Gotta respect representing the city you play in.

MLB

This was the hardest one to do for me. There are so many similarities between uniforms it was hard to really find any that stood out without being garish. And since the sight of Yankees or Red Sox uniforms make me gag, here you go.

1. San Francisco Giants- It’s a great look. I love orange and black as a color combination. These are just clean and classic looking. Love the serif font as well. Love the lack of nameplates on the back too. Then they change up on the away uniforms. I’m not a huge fan of changing the brim color on the cap for home and road unis, but if that is the only change I can live with it.

2. Chicago Cubs- What’s not to love about the Cubs home white unis? They are just classic Americana. Love ‘em. The road uniforms are pretty blah though. That’s probably the reason the Giants beat them out. I do think they may have the best alternate uniform in the game. Love the classic bear logo.

3. Minnesota Twins- Again, a uniform that was recently tweaked for the better. The road uniforms remind me of the Indians’ newest style. Which is a good thing of course. Like the Cubs, they look completely different on the road than they do at home. I also like the slightly more subdued Twins word-mark over the previous version.

So that’s the list. Perhaps I’ll do college football and basketball another day. Go ahead and tell me where I messed up in the comments.

  • Cooley Ford

No Miami Dolphins? I’ve always been partial to the 4-tone Aqua jerseys, myself.

  • mgbode
  • TSR3000

    Here are mine (non Cleveland):

    NFL
    1. Oakland
    2. Green Bay
    3. SF

    MLB
    1. Detroit
    2. LA Dodgers
    3. St. Louis

    NBA
    1. Boston
    2. Portland
    3. Philly

    NHL
    1. Detroit
    2. Chicago
    3. Vancouver

Not to open a can of worms but Michigan football is far and away the best uniforms in all sports, pro or college. just my $0.02.

  • Pale Dragon

No NHL? I think overall the NHL has the best collection of jerseys in pro sports.

As much as I hate Pittsburgh, I think it is really cool that the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates all share the black/yellow color scheme. For Cleveland fans, the brown and orange doesn’t match well with the other teams’ colors. I hate that OSU wears red while Michigan wears blue, but then in hockey Columbus wears blue and Detroit wears red.

Dragon, I have to say I don’t follow enough hockey to really have an opinion, but I will say I have been tempted to buy a Blue Jackets jersey just because of how great they look. Great colors and a beautiful jersey.

  • Frank Minefield

I’m partial to black, so I’ve always enjoyed the Raiders’ (and, as much as I hate to say it, White Sox) uniforms.

  • James

    Nice choices!

    My list would be:

    NFL
    1. Raiders
    2. Packers
    3. Redskins

    NBA
    1. Knicks
    2. Lakers
    3. Bulls

    MLB

I’m a big fan of the Wizards new looks….

The Red, White and Blue is pretty hard to beat, especially after the nasty black and gold and teal uniforms they’ve been rocking lately. Very Bullets esq. just too bad they didn’t change the name back too…seriously…the Wizards? I’m scared.

  • Foghorn Leghorn

    NFL:
    Raiders
    Bears
    Saints

    NBA:
    Clippers
    Celtics
    Lakers

MLB: (these are all so similar its hard to rank but…)
    LA
    Detroit
    KC

  • Glen

I think the Browns need new uniforms.

  • mgbode

    @10 – blasphemy.

unless you think we need to incorporate brown pants w/ our white jersey for home games (w/ the white & orange piping on the pants – it’s ridiculous all-brown).

  • Frank Minefield

@10 and 11, speaking of the Browns unis, anyone else happy to see the home whites making a comeback this year?

  • mgbode

@12 – hard to complain about all-whites. clean and crisp.

this is my favorite home outfit though:

  • Stinkfist

Chicago Blackhawks have the best uniforms in all of sports

  • Return of the (Alex) Mack

@ Rick: I’d like to see your top 3 NCAA Football uniforms (with ohio state being ineligible) there would be far more choices especially with the new crazy alternates teams have been wearing.

As for the Browns uniforms, call me crazy but I really liked a few years back when they went with the all Orange jerseys. I would also like to see a comeback of the “chocolate” pants.

  • Stinkfist

Loved the Oranges. Bring them back please!!!

  • mgbode

@Return – for me the college ones would be easy.

    1. Penn State
    2. Texas (burnt orange jersey variety)
    3. Bama

*Honorable mention for Arkansas and USC.

  • B-bo

Well if we have to take Cleveland teams (and the Buckeyes) out of the equation, then the tops are:

    NFL: Packers, Raiders, Chargers
    MLB: Cubs, A’s, Reds
NHL: Red Wings, Maple Leafs, Black Hawks
    NBA: Celtics, Bulls, Blazers
CFB: Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami(FL)

Just as fun? Choosing the worst (minus the ‘burgh and the school up north, which are always the worst):

    NFL: Bengals, Titans, Jags
    MLB: Diamondbacks, Marlins, Astros
    NHL: Sharks, Panthers, Islanders
    NBA: Hornets, Raptors, Heat
CFB: Oregon, Wyoming, Oregon (they are that bad)

  • Kirk

    2)Buccaneers Red
    3)Colts Blue
    4)Titans Lt. Blue
    5)Dolphins Teal

    MLB

    4)D-backs Red
    5)Giants Orange

    NBA
    1)Suns Orange
    2)Suns Purple
    3)Lakers Gold
    4)Mavs White
    5)Knicks Blue

  • Frank Minefield

@B-Bo, I think the Broncos deserve some consideration for the “worst” list in the NFL. Otherwise that’s spot on.

  • James

    Here are mine

    NFL
    1. Atlanta Falcons
    2. San Diego Chargers
    3. New York Jets

(skipped NBA because I don’t care for the NBA)

    MLB
    1. Not to be biased but I really like the old fashioned Cleveland uniforms.
    2. San Francisco Giants.
    3. Arizona Diamondbacks

  • Athanasios

Disagree about the Cavs uniforms. Really disliked the LeBron era jerseys. Love the real Wine and Gold…it is an original scheme that is unique to only the Cavs. All of the best teams have a more simple scheme with their own unique colors (Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, etc.) It’s good to know a team by their colors–Wine and Gold…not Red, Metallic Gold, and sometimes Navy, etc.

  • B-bo

@Kirk The Bucs never should have gotten rid of the creamsicle orange. Change the helmet? OK, maybe. But not the jersey.

@Frank I feel like a fool for omitting the Broncos. Their helmets in particular are just plain bad. It’s between them and the Titans to stay on my “worst” list.

@Athanasios Wine & gold would be perfectly fine for the Cavs, though I do miss the orange and blue. The problem is this mustard and ketchup nonsense they went to last season, which just doesn’t do it for me. Looked like they were the official team of McDonalds.

  • Kildawg

Browns unis: Not a fan at all of all-white uniforms as EVERY TEAM has them. (Well, almost and striping varies, but I digress.) Like the Brown Pants for the road, and would like Orange to make a comeback (alt tops) and revert to the Kardiac Kids and 80s look: Brown top with Orange Pants and striped socks. Couple more fun ideas: all brown unis and all orange unis. Keep helmets as is: we’re too good to have logos on our helmets and they’re classic. One more thing: REVIVE THE BROWNIE!

  • CLE

    BEST
NFL: Browns (white top and bottom), Chargers, Jets
    MLB: Indians, A’s, Giants
NHL: Maple Leafs, Black Hawks, Senators
    NBA: Couldn’t care less
    CFB: Texas, Alabama, Clemson,

  • TobaccoRoad

    NFL: OAK, ATL

  • TobaccoRoad

Can anyone explain why the Browns haven’t worn their brown jerseys yet?

  • BuckeyeDawg

    NFL: GB, CHI, SF
    MLB: Cubs, BOS, BAL
    NBA: CHI, BOS, Knicks
    NHL: DET, CHI, Rangers
    NCAA: Alabama, Penn St. Nebraska

  • mgbode

@27 – Holmgren decided to go with home-whites. Most teams use their colored jersey at home, which means the Browns have been in white so far this season.

  • Jen Richmond

Wonderful article! Thanks! And thanks to TSR3000 (?) for liking my Tigers unis.

  • Mark

Earliest possible time to see the brown jerseys, assuming Holmgren sticks to the whites-at-home rule next season? When we play at Dallas next year (the Cowboys have worn white at home since I started watching the NFL in the 80s). Either that, or we play a road game in the preseason or September and its above 90 degrees and the other team wants to make us sweat (e.g., the Tampa Bay opener last year).
