“Frankly, I don’t even care if DeVier did or didn’t get paid for work he did or didn’t do. At the end of the day, these kids did nothing morally wrong. In a world where dictators are hiring foreign mercenaries to slaughter their own civilians, I apologize for not getting worked up over kids receiving free tattoos or cash. To do so would be ludicrous, especially considering this charade is being acted out with the backdrop of media corporations advising conferences on which teams they should pluck from weaker conferences, as they figure out the most efficient way to stack their cash. Are we still shocked kids being exploited by a system with no scruples don’t respect its rules?
If precious BCS dollars and ratings are at stake–Gene Smith will help move heaven and earth for his player’s eligibility. If it’s his own job on the line, he’s shrugging at draconian and arbitrary sentences so not to ruffle the feathers of the NCAA. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. This is all coming from a man who, over the course of this debacle, has held press conferences with hand-selected media and addressed the “retirement” of one of the most successful coaches in Ohio State history with a YouTube video.” [DJ/Eleven Warriors]

Is Upton a possibility? “Ezequiel Carrera and Trevor Crowe are nice depth options and could factor into a fourth outfielder role again next year, but neither is a solution as an everyday outfielder. But one option that may come to light again is Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton. The Indians expressed strong interest in Upton this past July as they tried to work out a deal to acquire him before the July 31st trade deadline, and that interest spilled into August but a deal was never able to be reached. The Rays still appear set to trade him this offseason, and you can bet the Indians will be one of his biggest suitors. He is in his final year of salary arbitration and will be a free agent after the 2012 season.
There is no doubt that Upton would be a considerable upgrade in center field for the Indians. His athleticism and speed would be a welcomed addition to the team both in the lineup and the outfield. He would be better than any defensive outfield option on the Indians roster – including Sizemore – and would be a right-handed bat to boot which is something this lineup desperately needs.” [Tony/Indians Prospect Insider]

“All a ruse, of course, an elaborate prank designed by some puckish gridiron deity in search of a new way to smite the Buckeyes’ last remaining shreds of hope in the cruelest possible fashion. Step 1: Miller fumbles, setting up Step 2: A quick, two-play Nebraska touchdown drive to cut the lead to 27-13. Step 3: Miller leaves the game with an ankle injury, forcing the Buckeyes to turn to senior Joe Bauserman to preserve the lead. Step 4: Nebraska profits.” [Dr. Saturday]

“But we were surprised by this little nugget from USA Today: Fox’s NFL pregame show on Sunday received a bigger overnight rating than any of TBS’ baseball playoff games through the weekend. Holy smokes! What’s even more surprising is that people actually watch the pregame drivel that Fox, CBS and ESPN put out on Sundays before the NFL games.” [Red Right 88]

I used to watch the entire NFL pregame shows every single week, but don’t think I’ve seen more than the last 5 minutes of one since buying my house last spring….somehow mowing the yard or painting baseboard is suddenly more enjoyable than listening to Shannon Sharpe blab about the Ravens or Bill Cowher gush about the Steelers.
Drives me crazy to no end the way that every Browns rival and/or hater is a talking head on NFL pre-game shows… and how every ex-Browns player has about as much charisma as a rock or can hardly speak legibly.
ESPN’s pregame has become nigh unwatchable since expanding to, what, 3 hours now? Is that even necessary? 1 hour is filled with commercials, 1 hour is highlight reels/montages/horrible DJ-video mixes, and the last hour is endless chatter about the Eagles/Jets/or Patriots.
I’m happy just turning the Browns game on at 10 (PST) and going from there.
I can’t believe people still use pre-game shows to get their last-minute fantasy updates 🙂
honestly though, I think people just put the station on or tape the DVR early to make sure they don’t miss anything. doubt that they actually are watching much of it.
we all know baseball has gotten to a point where people either love it or hate it though. it’s sad, but it’s where the sport is right now.
