Game Nine Open Thread: Browns Vs. St. Louis Rams

The Cleveland Browns host the St. Louis Rams in a Week 10 clash of last place teams. Pat Shurmur faces his old club, which is a lowly 1-7 and, save for the Colts, could very well be the worst team in the league. The Rams were simply not competitive in the first six weeks of the season, but have improved over the past two weeks with a win over the Saints and an overtime loss to the Cardinals. Quarterback Sam Bradford has had an unimpressive season thus far, and enters the game hobbled by an ankle injury. The Browns have plenty of injury problems of their own, as running backs Montario Hardesty and Peyton Hillis are both out, in addition to Mohammed Massaquoi and T.J. Ward. The 1-7 Rams may be the Browns last, best chance for a W before they enter the rugged AFC North portion of the schedule. Follow along all afternoon in the comments section.

    A go-ahead score would cap an improved day on offense in my opinion, even if the rams are sorry on defense.

    That’s not a horsecollar… he had him by the jersey, not the inside of the shoulder pads. If he had him by the shoulder pads, Colt would be on the ground. I guess I’ll take it though…

    Agree with Cbus……much improved offense and here’s the scary part….they didn’t score a TD yet and we are saying how improved the playcalling and execution have been.

    Why was Alex Smith getting a handoff on 2nd and goal from the 9??? I’m absolutely stunned at that playcall. I’ve been defending the Browns all season, but that’s indefensible.

    And THAT’S what happens when you don’t even TRY scoring the touchdown.

    No joke. I called that missed field goal. After three non attempts at the end zone, I look at my family and say, “watch…they’ll miss this field goal. You run that risk when you don’t even attempt to get the touchdown.”

    Unreal.

    Absolute amateur hour.

    First and goal on the 9 and three straight runs into a stacked defense on the right side.

    Also, there was no reason to let the clock run down and burn a timeout before the try. With 15 seconds before the 2:00 minute warning, it was wasted.

    At least we didn’t cost ourselves a couple draft positions by winning a meaningless game. Don’t really even care if we lose out at this point. What a joke.

    I thought the Browns were going to stop playing for FGs this year.

    There’s been a lot of bad losses in the last 11 years, but this one is top 5. At home against one of the worst teams in the league.

    I dare all you excuse makers to come up with the silver lining in this one.

    It’s absolutely gutless. You need the touchdown with 2:30 or so left to force the issue on the rams. The sad part is that even with a MADE field goal, the plan could have easily backfired.

    Let’s not blow this out of proportion. The botched snap was a freak accident. There’s no way that happens more than 1 out of 100 times. I don’t want people to associate “playing for the field goal” with botched snaps, it just doesn’t happen enough to matter.

    That said, I wish they were much more aggressive on 1st down and goal from the 9. I wish they had not handed to ALEX FREAKING SMITH for the first time in his career with the game on the line. Even without the fumble, you don’t put the ball in the hands of someone who has never had it before. That’s just silly. Based on the way our defense was playing, I don’t think it was a huge ask of them to stop one more drive. Again, that said, I’m appalled by the lack of faith shown in McCoy with the game on the line.

    Shurmur’s post game press conference he sounds and looks like every past head coach here since the return. He gets a little upset and the reporters go silent until a change of subject question. Sums it up.

    Someone should make a list of all the ways the Browns have lost since 99. My favs have got to be Dwane Rudd and his hemlet aaand letting (The Bears?) score TWO TDs in the last 34 seconds of the game to then beat us in OT…

    That sounds like a great idea for a future thread. I would say make a top 10 list of dumbest ways we have lost, but I’m not sure top 10 is enough…

    Oh as for a good 6th round pick,Rubin and Hillis (though we didn’t pick him). Sorry I am late to the discussion I went and drowned my sorrows after this game without passing go and collecting 200$’s. Hell I could not believe how we lost or how bad Shurmers calls were in the red zone but if someone had told me someone lost this way I would guess it would have to be the Browns, hell most of the leagues regular doormats are winning but were are not so it would have to have been us.
