“Their treatment of the book is no surprise, really. I’m hard on ESPN. The Decision was a travesty, the Heat Index is an ongoing parody of sports journalism, and I genuinely believe that anyone who ascribes any degree of honesty or integrity to ESPN as an unbiased source of sports coverage is a damned fool. All this, and more, is in the book. So I would’ve been naive to think that a book like mine would get much play there. Hell, I’m the one who used #ESPNMiamiHeat as a Twitter hashtag all season. I get it, honest. I’ve worked at national magazines for 20+ years. It’s just business, and that’s all it is. Nothing personal.
Then I found out that Bill Simmons spiked a review of the book written for Grantland, the Sizzler of sports websites.” [Scott Raab]

Not that Jon hasn’t covered this here, several times in fact- “With that in mind, executives from other teams will surely look for other options to fill their closer needs. Several teams like the Reds and Blue Jays are rumored to be considering the trade route to pick up a closer. As these teams and others search through every possible option to fill their closer need, perhaps that search will take them to the Indians’ doorstep.
That’s where Chris Perez comes in. Perez, 26, was an All Star last season and went 4-7 with a 3.36 ERA and was 36-for-40 in save opportunities. He helped anchor a very strong Indians bullpen and at the moment looks to have solidified himself as the Indians’ closer for the next few years. But is Perez’s future really that secure with the Indians? And did he have as good a year as the save numbers suggest?” [Tony/Indians Prospect Insider]

I really hate this lock-out- “So by late last night, we had reached this point: Both sides had released statements to a third party — the press — affirming their willingness to talk, but neither had actually placed a call to the other to set up those talks. This is all very typical of high-stakes litigation, and it’s clear the first call is going to come soon — possibly by Wednesday, and, if the league has any interest in opening on or before Christmas, definitely by the end of this week.
But Boies mentioned another way the league could open for business by then without settling the lawsuit, something only outside legal thinkers have mentioned so far: The league could lift the lockout, create temporary rules for teams to sign players and operate under those rules while simultaneously entering into settlement negotiations with players. Going that route would limit the league’s exposure to lockout-related damages, which are linked to salaries players are losing due to missed games. It would also allow the league to function — games would be played, fans would be happy, networks would have content, etc.” [Lowe/Point Forward]

I’d have thought the ‘Napping Defense’ would have been vetoed in camp- “The embarrassing touchdown by Green led the Browns to change the way they huddle on defense. Cornerbacks Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown don’t huddle with their teammates. Instead, they are ready to line up with the player they are covering just in case the opponent quick-snaps again. Call it the “no-napping defense.” [Schudel/News Herald]

Holiday Hijack
Thanks to all the “Waiting…” peeps
Such great work you do.
i Second that… you guys make my workdays so much more bearable
Is it foolish to think that if it is so apparent to us that we should “sell high” on Perez that other teams won’t figure it out as well? Would we really get that much in return now that he is supposed to start getting expensive?
@Harv, at first I thought you were trying to make a play on words describing how well everyone has handled the waiting. As I was preparing my trophy acceptance speech I figured it out…
WFNY is my only source for Cleveland sports news. I literally don’t watch/read/listen anything else consistently, allowing you to mold and shape my psyche. Thanks for all the hard work.
@5: Ditto.
Thanks, all!
