12 Days of a Cleveland Christmas: Day 8

Congratulations to horace who was the winner of Friday’s drawing. A pair of tickets to a Cavs game are going his way.

Let’s get right to today’s giveaway. As always, here is the way the contest works-

Every weekday from now until Christmas Eve, we will give away a Cleveland themed prize. To enter, you need only to respond in the comment section in the appropriate manner. The winner each day will be randomly selected and notified by email. (Which means you better make sure that the email address you use to comment here is a legit one.) I cannot guarantee delivery by Christmas. Some of the prizes (like tickets) haven’t even been printed and mailed to us yet. We’ll do our best with the things we have in hand though. Only one member of a household can enter each day, and only one winner per household during the length of this contest. Just spreading the love around.

Today’s Prize-

Since this video hit the net, the Browns still haven’t won a game. The factory is still pumping. Today we are giving away a Factory of Sadness t-shirt and a copy of Joe Tait’s book with Terry Pluto- “It’s Been a Real Ball”. Joe Tait saw a lot of bad games in his career. It seems like a natural pairing.

Today’s question-

It’s a simple question that may not have such a simple answer. Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Comments must be posted by midnight Cleveland time in order to qualify for the drawing. Check back tomorrow at noon for the results. Remember, only one entry is allowed, but you may still comment to add to the discussion.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

A: The sweet is not as sweet without the sour. Nothing is going to be better than watching a Cleveland team win.

(Yes that is from Vanilla Sky, and I might be the only person who saw that movie)

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I ask that question about weekly anymore and the best answer I have is that Browns football is inextricably tied to so many good memories that I keep going back like an addict chasing that last good high. A lot of the best times of my childhood are wound around Browns games, both at the old Stadium and watching the games on TV with family.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

This is easy. I really enjoy watching football and the Browns are my home team. As I grew up, everyone around me (or an overwhelming majority) were Browns fans, too. So, I’m a product of my environment.

  • Justin

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

It’s in my blood. I take pride in them losing. They are a part of me. They were a part of my dad. It’s a way of life. There’s no turning back now.

  • gflanker

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because being a Browns fan means seeing a glimmer of hope where there is none.

  • Thomas

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because one day when the the Browns win it all, I can say to all those people in SC wearing Dallas, New England and Pittsburgh jersys now: I was wearing this jersy before it was cool! When did you get yours?

  • Drew

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Rooting for a perennial loser builds character and will make any future championship mean that much more. No way I am jumping on the Steelers bandwagon like half of NE Ohio has done over the past 15 years.

  • Ryan

Why do [you] support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

A: I so continue to support the Browns, and I do it because each week I think this may be the week things turn around. I do it because I want to be there when things do turn around, and eventually they have to… right?

  • BuckeyeDawg

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

    1) Because I was born and raised a Browns fan and I’m not a bandwagon jumper. I don’t turn my back on my hometown when things get tough. Loyalty means something to me.

    2) Because I know that when we finally do get this thing right, the city is going to go berserk…and it will mean that much more after everything we have been through all these years.

    3) Because screw Pittsburgh and their stupid little yellow towels and rapist QB and annoying, bandwagon fans…

  • chris

I support the Browns because I always have, because they provide proof that I’m not a fairweather fan and because, when they win the Super Bowl, it will be so much more fun celebrating the Browns’ when they finally get there than celebrating a championship for a team like the Pats, Colts or Steelers. It will change the city.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I have been a Browns fan my entire life, and even though they have been bad I will always stick with them. Being a true loyal fan means sticking with your team through good times and bad times. Since 1999 it has been pretty much nothing but bad times. When they finally do get to hoist the Lombardi trophy after winning a super bowl, true Cleveland fans will be able to appreciate the victory because of all the tough times the Browns have put us through.

  • Andrew

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I was birthed into supporting the Browns. My dad has had season tickets since 1972, never missed a game. Since 1999, I’ve missed 5. But the real reason I support the Browns is out of hope.

For me, supporting the Browns is just like being in love with the city of Cleveland. Regardless in both instances, no matter how many front office/civic changes we have, not much seems to change for the better. However, plenty of people look to the future for better times and fully expect them to come, all while holding the belief that the Browns and Cleveland itself will right the ship and have a renaissance once more. Part of it (for me at least) is the constant echos of glory of what used to be for both city and football club.

It doesn’t matter how much our city and sports clubs have been kicked down, we aren’t going to defeated until we lose hope. For me, it’s all about overcoming this adversity, which if anyone nationwide can do, it’s Clevelanders.

    Audere Est Facere.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I take a lot of pride in being a fan, and the “fan values” I was brought up with do not bend easily. I’ve been a fan of the Browns longer than any other sports team, and switching allegiances is not something I believe in. It has that deeply-rooted, religious feeling. When they win it all, it will feel that much better knowing that the hope we were clinging to was not in vain.

  • Cort

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I’ve lived the majority of my years in Cleveland and I pull for my “hometown” teams. Go Cleveland!

  • Bill

Why do [you] support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

    Because I’m a masochist…

  • Dan

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because I am no fair weather fan.

  • baclap

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Yes I do continue to support them. I suppose it is because of a mixture of a few things. For one, my entire family loves the Browns. So I was born into it in a sense. Secondly, they are the hometown team. I can go to games every year, catch every game on TV, and I just can’t avoid taking pride in my hometown team. Last I’ll say is because it’s going to be so sweet when we get a championship. Which will happen in my lifetime.

  • Bill B.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

The Browns still represent me and my city. I’m a displaced Clevelander, and nothing let’s me escape back to my past or feel more at home like watching a Browns game with fellow Browns fans. I’m actually not sure what I’m going to do if they start winning, because sharing a loss with fellow embattled Clevelanders is a feeling I grew up with…

  • Michael

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I grew up in a state that didn’t have any professional sports teams. Since moving to Cleveland nearly a decade ago, I have come to love this city. It doesn’t matter how bad the Browns, or any other team, are. I love them because I love this city.

I will take the bad along with the good. Despite the Browns being so bad they make me question if I enjoy watching pro football, I still tune in every Sunday. TV when I can and radio when I can’t. It is painful now, but since I’m not yet 30, I can hold out hope that I will see a championship in my lifetime. Go Browns!

  • Bryant

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because I’ve invested too much to not be here to celebrate when it FINALLY turns around!

  • S-Dub

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I don’t support any more, I observe and watch. I’m sick of letting Sundays ruin my week cause that awful team can’t win a game more than 4 times in 16 tries. I watch them the way I watch any other NFL game and just don’t let myself get attached.

  • EdTheRevelator

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I don’t really any more. I’m still a fan, and you may call me fairweather, but I can’t continue to invest myself in this team emotionally or financially. This franchise has been the epitome of dysfunction, year after year since 1999, really no matter who’s in charge. There’s no plan, no leadership and Holmgren’s recent “with us or against us” comments really irked me to the point where I’ve decided to take control and say “no more.” Sorry, Mike. I don’t owe you ANYTHING. I have a right to criticize how poorly this franchise has been handled until I see differently.

  • oribiasi

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because we used to be the class of the NFL and we can bring back those days with competent leadership and tough players. Because this is Browns town and its in our blood. And for God’s sake, what better sport is there than NFL football?

  • Joe

Why do [you] support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Not really. I mostly watch the games for the schadenfreude, which I admit makes me a terrible person. I came of sports-watching age during the years the Browns didn’t exist, so the NFL has never really been my thing, and I’ve never really understood this town’s obsession with a team that isn’t really the same as the Browns of old. My attitude might change once this organization starts demonstrating a bare minimum of competence (although I’m honestly surprised at how poorly Holmgren has handled things), but until then I’ll probably continue only watching the games if I have nothing better going on and spend the whole time laughing at how awful they are. (However, I did love the Mike Polk video and am a huge Joe Tait fan, which is why I’m entering this contest.)

  • John Byrnes

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because Cleveland is the City. Always support them regardless.

  • Gabe

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

In hopes of one day shoving it in the local Steeler fans faces.

  • Bryce

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I’ve tried to not support the browns but they have the gravity of a black hole. I always come back.

  • Bobby

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Not a fair weather fan. Supporting them through the down years makes it that much more redeeming when they finally win it (if that ever happens)

  • Paul

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because I am a loyal person, sometimes to a fault. Call me an eternal optimist or just dumb, but what am I going to do… root for the Ravens? The Steelers? Some New York team? Awful.

  • Holly

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because it will be that much better when they finally do field a winning team. Although I am doubting if that will ever happen.

  • Ryan C

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because I’m a glutton for punishment.

  • archangel9282

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I ask myself this about halfway through every season once it’s become clear that we have no hope of even sniffing .500 let alone making the playoffs. It is truly painful to watch them. And you ask this question at a particularly painful part of the season when every other team is fighting for position in the playoffs and our hopes have shifted from winning to losing for the sake of a higher draft pick, which we will undoubtedly spend on a bust draft pick. So, in answer to your question, … Good lord I have no idea. Insanity? Desperation? I’m going to go with gluttony for punishment. Yeah, I’m a glutton for punishment.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because that is what my dad taught me to do.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Cause I grep up watching…Kosar and Mack and Byner and Slaughter and Perry and Matthews and McNeil and Manoa and Newsome and Dixon and Minnifield… even if they suck eggs now…I’ll never EVER not support them!!!

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Tradition, family, and friendship. My family and most of my friends are CLE fans so no matter the outcome of a game the time spent with friends and family watching the games is not wasted. Many great conversations and times with family and friends while watching CLE games.

  • Painesville

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Too many memories growing up I suppose. But mainly because I don’t know any better. Football doesn’t exist outside the Browns and the Buckeyes for me. Besides, I know if I give up and begin rooting for someone else, they will win it all and I’ll feel guilty.

God created Cleveland to train the faithful. One cannot go against the word of God.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I believe the Great Lakes Brewery has something to do with it, though I’m not entirely sure. Also, fair weather fans make me sick.

    What else is there?

  • Domenic

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because you can’t change where you are from. Cleveland is my home town and the Browns are my team. Plus we are clearly the best fans is all of sport and our women are the hottest.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I do not because it feels like a waste of time. Nothing ever changes.

  • John Henrikson

Hope springs eternal so I continue to hope.. it goes back to the thrills I had as a boy listening to the Browns on the radio when Jim Brown was playing.. or going into the old Stadium for the first monday night game.. I don’t give up those dreams easily.

  • SummitOmar

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

It’s simple really, I was at the last game at the old stadium. No loss or collection of losses will EVER hurt as much as not having a team. I can’t quit the browns as much as part of me would like to I just can’t.

  • Dawgpoundgal

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

The answer defies logic. I spent part of my childhood in Cleveland so the Browns have always been my hometown team. When Art Modell ripped out Cleveland’s heart and moved his team to Baltimore, I swore that if the Browns did indeed return to Cleveland, I would be a die hard fan forever! Being a woman of my word, that is what I am doing…but it is more than that – it’s truly in my heart not just in my promise. Not only am I a die hard fan, I am also the president of a Browns Backers club on the east coast. I root for my Browns game in and game out, but it is also my resposibility and mission to keep other Browns Backers excited, involved and coming to watch games and support our Browns!

  • Jason

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

Because I’d rather be the guy that celebrates every win with relish than the guy who moans about his team losing for the first time in a year.

  • kmzipsgolf

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I support them because being a fan doesn’t imply rational thought.

  • Dave

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I will ALWAYS support this and all professional Cleveland teams. Sure, it’s been tough watching them lose more than they won, but I couldn’t imagine not rooting for them. As far back as I can remember, I’ve been a Browns fan. I remember The Drive and The Fumble like they were yesterday. Bernie was my favorite player, but I also loved Webster Slaughter, Ozzie Newsome, Clay Matthews, and Michael Dean Perry. I guess I’m one of the few that can still see hope even when it appears nothing’s going right and that comes from me realizing that sports are fun, but they aren’t life and death. I enjoy the games for what they are and will able to say when they finally do reach the promised land that I was there the whole time.

Why do support this Browns team year after year without so much as a glimmer of hope on the field? Or do you?

I’m a glutton for pain. And by now, I’m pretty numb to it all. Expectations are so low that it’s not that disappointing when the Browns do poorly.
