MLB Rumors: The Tribe’s Ongoing Search for a Right-handed Bat
December 14, 2011Baron Davis Released By Cavaliers Through Amnesty Waiver
December 14, 2011What started out as speculation surrounding the use of point guard Baron Davis appears to have turned into speculation surrounding whether or not the bearded veteran will suit up for the Wine and Gold ever again. On Wednesday, after receiving a second opinion on his ailing lower back, Davis has officially been listed as out with a bulging L2-3 disc; no timetable has been set for his return and the team states that they remain undecided as to the player’s future with the team.
Assuming Davis was experiencing pain prior to the first day of training camp when he was held out after the team’s first drill, he joins center Semih Erden and guard Manny Harris as players who had sustained injuries during the extended offseason.
Erden broke his right thumb while playing basketball in his home country of Turkey and has a projected return of three weeks which means he will miss at least the first 10 days of the compressed regular season. Harris, as has been a hot topic around these parts over the last 24 hours, has been diagnosed with a foot ulcer which was sustained during a cryogenic treatment to help cool his muscles following a workout at a Nike training facility, similar to what happened to world class sprinter Justin Gatlin earlier this year. In Gatlin’s case, the second-degree burn resulted in blisters that lasted several days. In Harris’ case, he is expected to rejoin his team in full capacity within the next two weeks.
As mentioned ad nauseum, Harris’ unguaranteed contract means that he is certainly on the bubble when it comes to making the Cavaliers’ final roster which stands at 16 players along with four training camp invites. Harris made the Cavaliers last season as an undrafted rookie when the team opted to part ways with shooting guard Danny Green.
Rounding out the injured players are a pair of shooters in recently-acquired forward Omri Casspi and veteran guard Daniel Gibson. Casspi sprained his right knee in a mid-practice collision and has only been taking part in some light shooting. Gibson paid a visit to the dentist on Wednesday morning and had a tooth extracted.

hopefully, we are able to put a timetable on Baron before the season begins to make the most informed decision we can on whether or not to use our amnesty provision on him.
also, it’s mildly funny that a potential starting lineup is currently out with injuries (except PF):
PG Baron (if we wanted Irving brought along slowly)
SG Gibson (i prefer him to Parker)
SF Casspi (obvious starter)
PF Jamison & Tristan better be careful
C Erden (okay, 3rd string center is the hole in this exercise)
The only serious injury is Davis, who will probably not appear in a game for the Cavs this year. More serious for the Knicks than it is for us…
Erden is like the 14th guy on the roster and Harris is way down the depth chart as well. More PT for Ramon and Boobie at 2 guard.
Question: How serious is this bulging disk? Career threatening? I’m wondering if it would actually make more sense for the Cavs not to amnesty Davis if there’s a chance that he could retire and bring his contract off the books while preserving the clause.
Not sure if that actually makes sense though.
Amnesty him already and get it over with please.
They did.
Bye Bye Baron.
Bye bye BD
The Good Baron Davis will be missed
Sweet on another note looks like Paul is headed to Clippers
So basically Grant traded Mo Williams for Kyrie Irving and a shot Harrison Barnes or Perry Jones.
I’d say that’s a pretty good deal.
wait what? you lost me at harrison barnes/perry jones
Amnesty clause in the new CBA was heavily argued by Gilbert. No Surprise they used it on Davis. Keep in mind, this basically means that Gilbert agreed to pay a minimum of 24 million dollars on the two remaining years of Baron’s contract. Basically Baron could never play again and collect 24 million from Gilbert.
Gilbert is the only owner I would want owning the Cavs right now.
