Week 14: The Browns Will Win If…
December 8, 2011Blue Jackets Ticket Offer
December 8, 2011Though he had been widely expected to be a member of the Cavaliers for much of the 2011-12 season, point guard Baron Davis will apparently be one of the few players who will become subject to the amnesty provision once the new NBA collective bargaining agreement is in place.
Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears reports that Davis will be in Cavaliers camp until the details are ironed out. He is expected to land in Cleveland this evening with camp tipping off tomorrow. Set to make $14 million this season and $14.8 million in 2012-13, Davis will get his money from Dan Gilbert while not counting toward the team’s salary cap. It has long been a belief that the Cavaliers would hold on to Davis for at least one year as he would be expected to groom rookie point guard Kyrie Irving while providing veteran leadership due to his rapport with head coach Byron Scott. If he is in fact an amnesty casualty, the Cavaliers’ payroll would come in right around $49 million, effectively putting them below the salary cap. Any free agents would have to be offered cap-space amounts as they would no longer have the mid-level exception at their disposal.
It is anticipated that Davis would clear waivers due to his elevated salary and would then become subject to the secondary bidding process. He has long been rumored to be on the radar of several teams including the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Charlotte Bobcats.

Def. in the NFL you can get quality starters (and even pro bowl talent) in all seven rounds plus the undrafted. Plus, there are 11 guys on the field from your team every play. It’s rare that one person has such an impact (except Colts n Manning).
In the NBA, one player (he who must not be named) got a certain team to the finals with Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Damon Jones, and more. Plus, draft picks after, idk let’s say 14th rarely give you any All Star power
Where’s the open thread for the Browns? At least I get to listen to the Always Great Jim Donovan
agree James, I’m missin the open thread….
Chris Paul trade was denied by the league. Interesting.
Anybody think it would be possible/feasible for the Cavs to put an offer sheet in for either Marc Gasol or Rudy Gay, now that they will have Davis’ contract off the books. I don’t see any way Memphis would be able to match to keep either player.
Each team has only one amnesty usage, for the duration of the CBA being drafted right now.
With negatives being the potential loss of an Irving mentor, and the potential that Davis landed in Miami or LA.. the Cavs front office were able to look ahead and say, essentially, “we don’t plan on taking on a contract or signing a player to a contract worthy of this one shot amnesty, in the future.” So, why not use it now. Jamison will get us something this season, a late first rounder hopefully, from a contender.
Valid point earlier (Jack) about Byron Scott being a perfectly suited mentor himself, makes the loss of Davis sting less. (Does it even sting?)
Bottom line- it saves Gilbert some money in what will be a season likely in the red, for him, as he and the f.o. look toward developing a young core and adding via the draft next season.

@55 Amnesty has to be on someone already under contract and on the team. Can’t trade for a player and then amnesty, nor can they amnesty a player they sign next season.
Season hasn’t even started and we’re WFNY.
Davis Amnesty means they keep Sessions, better long term I suppose
