Ohio State’s Dominic Clarke In Trouble Again
January 13, 2012Are We Being Overly Optimistic About the 2012 Indians?
January 13, 2012The more players we get him, the better off he’s going to be and I think there’s no question about that and it’s my job to do that. Colt had some very good games he really did. I do think that he’s shown enough that he can win football games in this league. I think that we can evaluate him and I think that we do. We see enough in Colt and I think he’s got a chance to be a real good player for us. […] Right now we have three quarterbacks and right now Colt would be the guy.
– Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert, in an interview with 92.3 The Fan’s Bull and Fox, on the future of the team’s quarterback position. When asked about the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft, Heckert merely stated that they will take the best guy available “it’s a quarterback or whoever.”

Okay. That about covers it. Clear, concise, definitive. A breath of fresh air. Colt’s the guy, but if Heckert determines that the best player available at #4 is a QB, he’s a Brown.
[As a corollary, this is how you report something.]
Remember, folks, believe NOTHING that the front office says about the draft for the next three months. They’re all playing poker.
“[As a corollary, this is how you report something.]”
Hmm, not sure if this comment is a compliment to Scott or meant as instruction on how he should report. If it’s the former, great. If it’s the latter, then no, you’re wrong.
If your comment is your idea of good reporting, you’re clearly not a reporter. Your comment is… commentary. Reporters report. They do no comment, interpret or editorialize. Looking at Scott’s piece he includes 1) a verbatim quote, 2) attribution to the speaker and credit to the original media source and 3) finally, a paraphrase of something else Heckert said.
This article is a perfect example of good reporting.
Sorry, if I seem a little touchy, but I guess I am. I read comments like this all over this forum and beyond from people who don’t know the first thing about journalism. Best way to illustrate this? Read Heckert’s quote again. No where does he say, “Colt’s the guy.” That’s your interpretation.
Um, yeah, I’d say you’re a bit touchy. It was meant as a compliment to Scott. I’m generally not one to compliment myself, and would never dream of being, or considering myself, a “journalist.”
But hey, thanks for the instruction!
He does not have the arm strength for todays NFL period
It’s just nice to see someone report what they heard as opposed to the usual bad jokes and snide remarks like the PD and certain radio shows.
Finally. Thank you Tom.
Colt needs a perfect situation to be a playoff caliber QB (top 5 offensive line, good play calling, pro bowl running back and stud WRs). This makes every other personnel decision way too important.
Like I said, if it was a compliment, great! I guess I’m not used to seeing compliments on the Internet. You clearly did not need the instruction… my apologies.
Apology readily and cheerfully accepted.
if been playing with a mock draft (i’m up to six rounds if yer interested.). i find the browns first three picks the most difficult to predict and by a wide margin.
at 1a: richardson or griffin or other?
at 1b: wr or olb or de?
at 2: reach for qb or d-back help?
ive got it richardson, jeffrey, foles now and with 0% confidence.
Jim,
I can see Holmgren overruling Heckert once, but not twice. That’s grounds for quitting.
utterly grasping at straws trying to guess which holes the browns will plug first.
most other teams are straightforward: pitt, replace hampton; jets, find safety to cover TEs; lions, d-backs, d-backs, d-backs.
browns could go in five different directions.
I really want WR, RT, and RB in the first 3 picks assuming there are guys at each spot with value for that selection (and, of course, depending on what we do in FA).
WR: Blackmon(#4), K-Wright/Floyd/Jeffrey(#22), Sanu(#37)
RB: Richardson(#4), L.Miller(#22), Polk(#37)
RT: Kalil(#4), Martin/Reiff(#22 – if they fall), Z.Sanders(#37)
Take your pick for what you think is the best 3man combination to help fix out offense as I like all the players listed. Of these, my ideal selections would be:
Blackmon, Lamar Miller, Zebrie Sanders
