Happy Birthday: WFNY Turns Four Years Old

Four years ago today, I wrote what was (then called) the first “Morning Minute” on these here pages; a post that recapped the last 24 hours of Cleveland Sports news, meant to be read in a minute’s time. What can I say? We were way ahead of the ADHD curve.

It was the first non-imported that signaled WFNY being open for business.  Back then, there were Gamblogs and op-eds. Rumors and news. We debated Quinn versus Anderson, pondered trading for Mike Miller (then in Memphis), and Andrew wrote about the Browns and the Indians.  Times surely were crazy.

Four years and 15 million page views – a mark which we passed this very weekend –  later, I look back and still can’t believe what WFNY has become. Quick-hitters and longform. Gamers and profiles. Access yet outsiders still looking in.

While We’re Waiting… Competing in the AL Central, More ID Fraud Coming and a Brian Sipe Sighting

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

The only division we can compete in? “Outside of the Fielder deal, while teams in the other divisions have improved, the teams in the AL Central this offseason have done very little to make themselves much better. The Royals and Twins have made a few nice signings, but nothing big or that will put them over the top. Like the Indians, the biggest boost to them will be health and the development of their internal players. The White Sox are in sell mode and are retooling and are not considered to be a major factor in the division this season.

Even with the Tigers continuing to add big pieces in the past year, the Indians should thank their lucky stars they are not in the AL East or AL West as they would almost have no chance every year unless they hit on a bunch of young very good players at one time like the Rays. Beating the “buyers” over a 162 game season is a tough task, but the Indians have never had to really worry about that too much in the AL Central.” [Tony/Indians Prospect Insider" [Read more...]

Varejao: It’s What I Try to do Every Night

Well, it’s what I try to do every night: get the second chance and stuff like that. Tonight worked out. Tonight worked out. We had the ball back and we had the chance to win the game. And Kyrie [Irving] made the shot. And we won. Tough game. But the key for the game to me was how our defense in the fourth quarter. Through the whole game we played hard on defense. And that’s why we won the game.

- Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao following the team’s 88-87 win over the Boston Celtics. Varejao finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and two steals. His ability to harness a loose ball with 22 seconds remaining provided the opportunity to earn the win.

Box Score: Cavaliers 88, Celtics 87

There you have it: Kyrie Irving’s first game-winner, and it was a thing of beauty. Irving took a screen at the top of the key from Anderson Varejao as the clock ticked down, slid around Avery Bradley into a 360, finishing off balance with his left hand in a beautiful swish over a swatting Brandon Bass. The Cavaliers needed one more defensive stop, but they got it and held on for a 88-87 victory in Boston. Irving led the team in scoring 23 points and 6 assists, but Varejao fought for key second chance possessions in the final minute, and Andy finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Ray Allen led the Celtics with 22, but the Celtics came up short as they blew a 11-point lead with 4 minutes remaining. The Cavaliers improve to 8-11 and face these same Celtics on Tuesday night in The Q.

Ahh, sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference by beating Michigan. As far as the regular season goes, it doesn’t get much better than that. The Buckeyes faced some adversity in this one and Michigan’s zone slowed the Buckeye attack. However, the Buckeyes were a little bigger and a lot tougher on the boards, and it propelled them to a 64-49 victory at The Schott this afternoon. Lenzelle Smith Jr. was the star for the second conference game this season, posting 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Jared Sullinger was held to just 5 first half points, but he finished with 13 points and 4 boards as he scored a couple crucial buckets late. The Buckeyes are now 7-2 in conference play and hold a one-half game lead over Michigan State, who doesn’t play until Tuesday.

Report: Keith Butler heading to Indianapolis

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Indianapolis Colts are pairing new head coach Chuck Pagano with Bruce Arians and Keith Butler as offensive and defensive coordinators respectively. Pagano was the Browns’ secondary coach from 2001-2004 and had been Baltimore’s defensive coordinator this past season, Arians was the Browns’ offensive coordinator from 2001-2003 and had been with the Steelers ever since (in the coordinator position since 2007), and Butler, who was the Steelers’ linebackers coach, was the Browns’ linebackers coach from 1999-2002, the lone holdover from the Chris Palmer era. So, that’s three coaches from Butch Davis’s staff in Cleveland. Indy’s hoping it turns out a little better for them than it did here with the Browns. We’re hoping it takes away some of the Steelers’ thunder.

Do the Cavaliers have any keepers beyond their two rookies?

I’ve seen this go through the Twitterverse and it has come up among conversations with other Cavalier fans in person. There is a strong belief among many that the Cavaliers will, in as little as two years time, have 13 new players on the roster, with only Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson remaining.

While the Cavs certainly don’t have another dynamic core player emerging from the makeup of this team anytime soon, I do think that they currently have a few young players (or guys young enough to play a role in two years) that can help fill out a 9-10 man rotation. While I believe the core of this team other than Kyrie and Tristan is going to come from their large amount of cap room and subsequent drafts, the idea that only those two will remain is not something with which I agree.

I’m going to start by talking about the current players that I feel could play a role on a contending team in two years. I’m talking about Daniel Gibson, Alonzo Gee, Samardo Samuels, and Omri Casspi. [Read more...]

While We’re Waiting… Catching Up With Mike Fratello, OSU-Michigan Preview, and Tiger Fans Rewarded

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

First up, our own Brendan Bowers caught up with Mike Fratello, and he asked him about Kyrie Irving, “You know, I don’t know who I would compare him to really. I think it’s better if we let him get his own identity, and down the road let somebody say his game is like Kyrie Irving’s. Because, what do you want to say, want to say he’s a Chris Paul type guard? I don’t know that yet. I’d like to see this kid get his own way, develop his own reputation, and then let people try to be like him.” [Stepien Rules]

Next, the Buckeyes battle for first place on Sunday afternoon against the Michigan Wolverines. Eleven Warriors has a preview with a UMHoops.com blogger, “When you look at Michigan’s roster, it needs a shot taker or a high usage player that can create his own shot and create for others. Darius Morris took 25% of Michigan’s shots while he was on the floor last season and players like Stu Douglass or Zack Novak aren’t going to start attempting five or six more shots per game, it’s not their role. Tim Hardaway Jr. is really the only other player that’s comfortable in that high usage role in the Michigan offense. Burke has essentially shouldered the offensive workload and has proven extremely comfortable as the focal point of the Wolverine offense.” [Eleven Warriors]

Report: Thome Has Handshake Agreement to Join White Sox Organization Upon Retirement

HardballTalk on NBC Sports has the story about former Cleveland Indian Jim Thome having a handshake agreement with White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf to join the club in some capacity following his retirement. Thome, 41, signed with the Phillies in the offseason following his stint at the conclusion of the 2011 season with the Tribe. This could be a blow to some fans who may have hoped for the same agreement between Thome and the Indians. Jimmy played with the White Sox from 2006-2009.

“When he left here to go to the Twins (in 2010), we kind of shook hands and agreed that, whenever his career is over, he’ll come back to the White Sox in some capacity, Reinsdorf said. He did say that he wants to live in Chicago. Whenever it’s over, hopefully I’ll see him back here. And I hope I live to see him go into the Hall of Fame.

Anything he wants, Reinsdorf said. I’d like to see him come to spring training, work with the young players. He’s a great role model. He really understands hitting. This is not just a guy who goes up there with a bat and swings. He understands hitting. We’ve talked about hitting a lot. He understands it. There’s a lot that he can impart. Just being around, you know. If he goes on to be a big league coach, that would work too.”

What say you, Tribe fans? Does this bother you considering Thome spent nearly three times as long with the Tribe as the ChiSox?

Irving’s fantastic finish cannot overcome Nets’ backcourt duo

For the first 45 minutes of game action last night, the Cavaliers were being solidly beat by a New Jersey Nets team that looked much better than they did in Cleveland on January 1st. Deron Williams looked like the perennial All-Star that he has been, Anthony Morrow added to his profile of Cavalier killer, and Kris Humphries outperformed Anderson Varejao down low and hit some surprise jumpers. Then, Kyrie Irving took charge with about three minutes to go, scoring 17 in that mad dash to the finish and 21 overall in the quarter, as the Cavaliers came up just short, falling 99-96 to the Nets in Quicken Loans Arena.

In a sequence that has only played itself out a few times this season, Scott’s Cavaliers started this one lacking energy and effort. When asked about his team’s effort, Byron Scott in the postgame press conference said, “I just didn’t think we came out with the right frame of mind for whatever reason. I don’t know if guys think that we’ve arrived or that we can’t stand prosperity, but whatever the case may be, we better understand that every night we better come out ready to play, because every team in this league can beat us if we don’t.” While I don’t believe any Cavalier thinks they’ve arrived, the team just came off playing Miami tough to the end and beating the Knicks, so perhaps they failed to recall just how much defensive will it took for those two outcomes. PD Representative Addresses Grossi Reassignment

As we covered here on Thursday, Tony Grossi has been reassigned off the Browns beat after his accidental Twitter jab at Browns’ owner Randy Lerner. There has been a large outcry on both sides, from fans who felt Grossi had lost his objectivity long ago to staunch support from fellow national writers and local radio personalities who feel Grossi was unfairly punished. This morning, we finally hear The Plain Dealer’s reader representative, Ted Diadiun, weigh in on why the Grossi reassignment was unfortunate but necessary. This excerpt drives home the two main reasons why the PD felt this move had to be made.

“‘If in your most private moments you feel like the leader of the institution you cover is pathetic, that raises questions about how fair you can be,’ she [PD Editor Debra Adams Simmons] said. ‘And once those opinions become public, it becomes a bigger problem. There’s the potential for readers to question the objectivity of everything you write.’

An important point to make is that there is a difference between columnists and reporters at a newspaper.

‘If it had been a columnist who wrote that, we might cringe, but that role is different,’ said Adams Simmons. ‘They’re paid to offer up opinions, however prickly. But we’re not asking them to go out and cover a team in a fair and balanced and objective way, like we are with a reporter.’”

Once again, full disclosure, WFNY has a partnership with Cleveland.com, The Plain Dealer’s internet home. Read the rest of the response from Diadiun here.

Chris Kaman is on the trading block, Cavs interested?

UPDATE: Mary Schmitt Boyer has posted an article regarding the Cavaliers’ interest in Kaman. Check that out here. Also, Terry Pluto said on his Twitter account that he got a “no comment” from a higher up in the Cavalier organization, which Pluto believes means there is some genuine interest.

In recent days, New Orleans GM Dell Demps made it public that the team is actively trying to trade center Chris Kaman. There have been several teams reportedly interested, but you had not heard the Cavaliers mentioned as a potential suitor. Then, this morning, the @PDcavsinsider Twitter handle, presumably Mary Schmitt Boyer, tweeted this.

Kaman, now 30 years old, has career averages of 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Now in his eighth NBA season, Kaman, the sixth pick of the 2003 NBA Draft, was on the Cavaliers’ radar a couple of years ago, but injury issues made the wine and gold hesitant to acquire him. While this tweet only implies possible interest, it would be a surprise to see the Cavaliers target Kaman, despite his status as a true traditional center. Anderson Varejao takes up most of those center minutes at the moment, and with Andy having one of his best seasons statistically (not to mention being younger than Kaman), the rebuilding Cavaliers should look elsewhere for a center, perhaps in June with big boards, suits, and funny looking draft hats.

While We’re Waiting… Brad Childress as Offensive Coordinator, More Varejao All-Star Talk, and the Buckeye Offensive Line

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com.

Leading off, Brad Childress is the Browns’ new offensive coordinator, and ESPN AFC North Blogger Jamison Hensley doesn’t think it was the best choice, “The problem with Childress is his track record with offenses. In the eight years Childress has been a head coach or offensive coordinator in the NFL, his offenses have ranked in the bottom half of the league five times. The disturbing part is he’s been an NFL playcaller for only one season. The result? The Vikings finished 23rd in yards and 26th in points (17.6 per game) in 2006 before Childress passed those duties over to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell the next season. ” [ESPN AFC North Blog]

We’ve had some talk this week from WFNY’s Scott about Anderson Varejao and whether he deserves a trip to the All-Star game. Over at Stepien Rules, our own Brendan Bowers gives his thoughts on Andy’s All-Star prospects by breaking down the other options, “To reiterate, Anderson Varjeao is averaging over one rebound per game more than anybody on this list not named Dwight Howard, he is averaging more steals than anybody on this list too, while also scoring in double figures. With the exception of Joel Anthony who actually stinks, only Joakim Noah and Roy Hibbert are playing on teams with better winning percentages than Anderson’s Cavaliers are right now too.” [Stepien Rules]

Box Score: Nets 99, Cavaliers 96

The New Jersey Nets looked like a completely different team than the one that the Cavaliers blew out on New Year’s Day in The Q. The backcourt duo of Deron Williams and Anthony Morrow lit up the wine and gold with 49 combined points as the Nets drained 11 three pointers and led by double digits for most of this one. Kyrie Irving led a dramatic late charge for the Cavs, scoring 21 of his 32 in the final act and 17 of those in the final three minutes, but they started their run just a little too late. Antawn Jamison added 20 points for the Cavaliers as the Cavaliers fall to 7-11 on the season.

New Jersey Nets Limp Into Cleveland to Face the Cavaliers

With an extremely dangerous section of the schedule coming up for the Cleveland Cavaliers, it’s important they try to not go into that stretch on a losing note. Friday night the New Jersey Nets (6-13) visit The Q to take on the Cavaliers (7-10). After tonight’s game, the Cavaliers’ next 10 games are all against opponents who should be in the playoffs this spring. The Cavaliers, fresh off two nights sleep in their own beds and a game off, can’t afford a let down game against the Nets.

The Nets are limping into this game, in one sense, and red hot in another. Having won 4 of their last 8 and coming off a great win against the 76ers Wednesday night, the Nets are playing their best basketball of the year. However, injuries and illness are taking their toll on the Nets right now. [Read more...]

NFL News: Brad Childress Officially Named Offensive Coordinator of the Cleveland Browns

According to multiple sources around the Cleveland area from the ABJ to both WFAN and WKNR, the Cleveland Browns have secured the services of Brad Childress as their offensive coordinator.

That news is hardly a surprise as it seemed almost imminent when Mike Sherman was hired to fill the same position for the Miami Dolphins last night.  All along it was thought to be a two horse race for Pat Shurmur’s staff vacancy.

Important questions remain like who will be calling plays, but for now, we know who will be on the sidelines.

Cavaliers’ New CavFanatic Alternate Uniform Review

So you know I couldn’t resist. Being the resident Uni-Nerd I had to chime in on the Cavs newest threads. As always, what follows is strictly my opinion…

The Cavs debuted the new ‘CavFanatic’ uniforms against the Knicks this week. They will wear the alternate set 4 more times this season. They are called CavFanatic because of the “social networking platform” that the Cavaliers established and encourage fans to join. I’ve not paid much attention to the CavFanatic message board, or Facebook page much, but I do know that they host events. Seems like a Browns’ Backers ‘type’ of organization. (I said type of organization, please don’t send letters if you have a strong opinion on either of these groups.)

Originally, I assumed that someone on the CavFanatic board must have designed these uniforms, or at least that the group got to vote on which design they wanted to see made into a set. That isn’t the case however- [Read more...]

Johnson: Kyrie Irving’s Confidence Has Grown Throughout Year

[Kyrie Irving] is a nice, young player. I obviously didn’t get to see a lot of him in college, but he’s a nice, young player. The rotation should be solid with a top four of Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Josh Tomlin, and Derek Lowe. But what will really help carry this Tribe team, as it did last year, is the Bullpen Mafia, version 2012. [Read more...]
