NBA News: Miami Heat Take Shot at Cavs and Raptors

The Miami Heat apparently need some more of their faithful to “Fan Up” to see three of the greatest stars the NBA has to offer over the next couple of games.  Isn’t it amazing when a team marketing department has to work this hard to sell what would be the easiest ticket in the world to sell in a real sports town with real sports fans?  I pity them, really.

Oh well. I guess I’ll just stop my whining now.  Serious question though. Has anyone ever seen the tip in Miami live?

  • Hurst02

This doesnt really seem like a shot at the Cavs or Raptors…all is says is that LeBron and Bosh are playing their old teams, then relates it to the heartbroken people of 2012 facing their old flames. Not once does it take a shot or put down the Cavs or Raptors. Stretching for a headline much?

If I were a heat fan, i would prob be sick of seeing Lebron/Cle and Bosh/Tor crap.

that is the strangest advertisement for a sporting event that I ever saw.  I thought it was going to be a coupon for a manicure at the bottom or something that happened to get attached to the pic you posted.

could you imagine how it would go over if the Indians tried that type of advertisement?

Did you miss the part about ice cream and where it said to quit whining?

  • Snap

doesnt matter people in miami do not care about any kind of sport

  • @pcteeple

If you were a heat fan, I’d demand to know where you meet the unicorns, leprechauns and non-annoying Steelers fans for your support group for THINGS THAT DO NOT EXIST.

Worst makreting copy i’ve ever read, those people suck at their job

  • Return of the (Alex) Mack

“We don’t care bout nothing but this U!!!!!”

  • Mark Skog

Meh. Miami fans are pathetic. I didn’t need this to confirm that. As fans, they can take their shots. Whatever. Their team is better right now but we know their fans are sad. If they need this to get them to come to the games, well, that says something doesn’t it?

  • Hurst02

No, I didn’t. Did you miss the part where they are saying that to their own fans and not the Cavs or Raptors? Let me sum up the article for you:

Dear Heat fans, what’s better for getting over a break up in the new year with the upcoming holiday? Coming to a Heat game. It will be even better because the Heat are playing back to back old ‘break up’ teams of 2 of their stars.

If it was a jab at Cavs or Raptors fans, then why would they be inviting them to watch the Heat beat those teams?

  • Boomhauertjs

    FAN UP!!!!!

  • Anonymous

So in a desperate attempt to get fans to care they stir the pot about current players former teams to drum up some sort of rallying cry for….support….? I don’t understand how this is supposed to bring fans out other than to rally around the “we got all your players na-na-nah-boo-boo” idea.

If that is the general idea, that is really weak.

Would they write this about the Pacers and the Pistons too?

  • Anonymous

I shudder to think what they’ll do for Valentine’s Day.

  • pelliott

Then why not make this terribly-written press release 3 weeks ago when their attendance was still garbage and they weren’t playing the Raptors and Cavs in the same week?

  • Anonymous

At least they didn’t say, “We need to talk.”

every time I see that I can’t help but to think of the Super Hero Squad Show theme song.  and now it is stuck in my head the rest of the day, so clicker beware:

recreate the scene from Patch Adams with the arena doors having the same entrance as the OB-GYN convention had?

    Dear Fans,

We don’t even know you anymore.

Agree with Hurst. Reading a poorly-written piece incorrectly here, I think.

Not a jab at Cavs fans. And, no, Craig, they would not write this about the Pacers of Pistons because they do not have key players that left those cities.

They are actually taking a jab at LBJ/Bosh given how the article positions everything. LBJ/Bosh are manning up to face their former teams, like jilted lovers should do in their lives…they are aligning LBJ/Bosh with the broken-hearted, not the people they left.

They’d need to say that watching the Raps/Cavs confront their former team might give hope to the broken-hearted to align that correctly.

Really think this was written by a marketing female with little knowledge of the game or “The Decision.”

Sorry, Craig, think you’re being a lil’ too sensitive on this one…

  • Hurst02

No probably not. Yes they connected the dots between a break up and the teams, but they weren’t aiming this at Cavs or Raptors still, they were writing it to Heat fans. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on whether or not this was meant to bash the teams or to just say ‘hey fans, the heat will be facing their old teams, so get off your butts and stop moping around about new years loves’.

  • Harv 21

Not a clear shot at the Cavs, just an ad so weirdly wordy, unnecessarily vague and poorly written that it’s almost incomprehensible who they’re targeting (jilted facebookers?) or why you should buy. They either weren’t sure what they wanted to say or in editing out potentially offensive stuff accidentally castrated the message.

Can be cut and pasted by a marketing professor to help demonstrate why an ad fails.

  • Cody Searl

Wait, Toronto fans miss Chris Bosh? I would think they’d be happy about not having him.

Isn’t the Diet Dr. Pepper guy there, too?

if you get dumped by a girl who decides to marry an 80yr old billionaire, then how does that girl get to be called the jilted lover?

  • JM

Miami fans need to worry about their team not finishing games. Granted they will probably go to the Finals, but eventually that catches up to you.

Since when is Miami a ‘real’ sports town? It’s full of transplants (other teams’ fans), non-sports fans, and first/second generationers. Maybe they get their major market status from their sheer population but do they really compare to the Chicago/New York/Boston/LA as far as sports towns? I’ve always felt like that town is a wanna-be kind of town. They either want to be LA or New York but they never seem to meet either expectation.

  • Jared in LA

That press release is ridiculously confusing who or what audience it’s targeting.

  • Jack

    They don’t. Writer isn’t bright.

Not a single part of that is directed at Cavs fans–not even transitively or in veiled fashion.

It’s extremely likely that the person who wrote that knows next to nothing about ‘The Decision’ or basketball…

  • TOJ

FYI – when measuring reading comprehension scores globally, US students generally score in the middle of the pack.

I follow you on this one.

  • Jack

Also, if this were in fact a shot at Cavs fans (which it isn’t), this is weirdly playing into the exact obsession that they would be playing/preying upon…

…so not sure why the compulsion to get worked up about it.

    Seems petty and weird.

    “Seems petty and weird”

are you new to being a Cleveland sports fan :)

  • Jack

    Fair.

I’m not mad about this ad…..but I do have a sudden urge to drive 3/4 of the way to a McDonalds.

    Ahh, thank you.

  • Anonymous

sorry, couldn’t help the response :)

  • NoVA Buckeye

miami still thinks the heat beat dallas 3-3…

  • Foghorn Leghorn

Its Miami.  Jilted Facebookers are the target audience.  Get with the times in South Beach, Harv.  Priorities: Gym, facebook status, job, bouncers you know, celebrities in town, family, car, knowing LeBron’s real estate agent, Heat.

  • Albert

This was a poorly conceived marketing ploy to stir up excitement for games against two of the lowest selling road teams. No big deal.

  • Hurst02

Nice jab about my reading comprehension you threw in there. There’s a difference between reading comprehension and reading too much into an article to fuel one’s agenda to hate the Heat more and dig for stories.

As for teams that are really good and their fan-bases don’t
seem to be getting bigger and bigger, it’s the Heat. They are a big-market team
and they are the current champions, heat tickets
    are available at http://www.casatickets.com/miami-heat-tickets/
The miami play better team basketball but i do think
    bulls is more talented.
