NFL Free Agents: Quarterbacks

League-wide free agency begins March 13th. The Browns have stated all along they prefer to build the team through the draft, but will take a look at the players available in free agency. Previously we looked at the receivers available. Then a glance at the linebackers. Yesterday, we stared longingly at offensive tackles. Up next, the signal callers.

The Browns have Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy under contract next year, but that is no guarantee that both will be in camp come summer. Wallace’s deal isn’t outrageous by any stretch, but there was a little noise last year about him wanting a chance to start. IF Wallace asks to go elsewhere, or IF the Browns decide to make a trade or pick a QB high in the draft, they may be in the market for a veteran. Here is the market:

Richard Bartel (ARZ) – Restricted

Max Hall (ARZ) – Exclusive Rights

Chris Redman (ATL)

Derek Anderson (CAR)

Caleb Hanie (CHI)

Josh McCown (CHI)

Shaun Hill (DET)

Drew Stanton (DET)

Kyle Orton (DEN)

Brady Quinn (DEN)

David Garrard (FA)

Chad Pennington (FA)

Matt Flynn (GB)

Jake Delhomme (HOU)

Jeff Garcia (HOU)

Dan Orlovsky (IND)

Luke McCown (JAC)

Tyler Palko (KC) – Restricted

Chad Henne (MIA)

JP Losman (MIA)

Sage Rosenfels (MIA)

Donovan McNabb (MIN)

Brian Hoyer (NE) – Restricted

David Carr (NYG)

Mark Brunell (NYJ)

Kevin O’Connell (NYJ)

Drew Brees (NO)

Chase Daniel (NO) – Restricted

Kyle Boller (OAK)

Jason Campbell (OAK)

Vince Young (PHI)

Charlie Batch (PIT)

Dennis Dixon (PIT)

Byron Leftwich (PIT)

Charlie Whitehurst (SEA)

Alex Smith (SF)

Kellen Clemens (STL)

A.J. Feeley (STL)

Josh Johnson (TB)

Rex Grossman (WAS)

You can go ahead and scratch Drew Brees and Alex Smith off the list. These two will be re-signed by their teams.

There are some interesting choices to be made in the NFL this off-season. In Miami, they have a ton of free agents that they have to make decisions on, starting at the QB position. Many feel like they are the front runners for Matt Flynn.

So is there a name on this list that you would rather see holding a clipboard in Cleveland? We’re already heard the Donovan McNabb rumors.  Are you good with Colt and Seneca? Is it RG3 or bust for you?

cmon now, if we solve the QB-crisis then what will we have to discuss?

fan1:   Hey, BrownsQB looked pretty good this week.
fan2:   Yeah, 450yds, 5TDs.  He makes it look easy.
fan1:   So, yeah.  How about that backup LS?

In all honesty, I did like the guy. I wish had been healthy and had performed better. It would have been good for Colt to have real bench time behind a solid QB (though Daboll was apparently not interested in having him really learn anything).

    I love gumbo.

  • Browns19

Are you guys nuts? Pass on RG3???? Yeah, Oookk. So glad the pros are running the franchise.

and hot sauce and crawfish.  mmmmmm.

  • Anonymous

What are you having him over for dinner next week. First you used his pathetic play in a joke and then after a couple of scotchy scotches you got all sentimental towards the jaker.

if cleveland does not go after rg3 I’ll puke. Anyone who thinks that colt mccoy is the answer I have this real shiny nickel that I found that I can sell you for a dollar.

It seems my hypocrisy knows no bounds.

If he’s bringing cajun food, he’s welcome at my table anytime (see below).

I spent a year in Louisiana one month.

I live only 6 hours away, but with 3 kids that might as well be 6 states.

careful making that deal, it could always end up to be an uncirculated ’16

You’re no hypocrite Doc, you just like to sound like one.

Sorry I’m entering Movie Quote Finishers Anonymous next week

Bartel, Anderson, McCown, Quinn, DelHomie, Garcia. Have any of them ever been in a Cleveland uni?

Honestly, I say trade Seneca for a mid rounder, see what the market is for Colt, sign McNabb as a BACKUP and nothing more(a Childress guy who could actually be a good mentor on the bench) and go all in on RG3. The guy is going to be a superstar, mark my words. Also, can we get some actual BROWN in the jerseys next season? Watching them in all whites got very irritating.

  • Jaker

    Nailed it

  • Jaker

No to Claiborne. Too high for a position that isn’t the biggest need. RG3, Richardson and Blackmon are the 3 worthy of that pick

the same odds of finding this nickel are the same odds of colt mccoy winning a superbowl.

  • Beer Goblin

    # 1    Peyton Manning………..If he checks out 100%
    # 2    Kyle Orton
    # 3    RGIII  @ #4……….no trade-up!
Although, if we don’t do something about the O-line, Clark Kent may be the only option!

  • Tad

Thank you Daniel! I am tired of the knee-jerk reaction to 1st year Cleveland QBs. Put some talent around Colt and see what he can do. Having said that, it is hard to ignore Flynn’s potential to to be inserted into their offense with immediate results. I would not question the FO if they signed Flynn and would happily watch games with him behind center.

i don’t know.  i saw an ’18 buffalo nickel when visiting the US Mint in DC.   that’s alot closer to the ’16 than the Browns have ever been to a superbowl win.

  • Anonymous

and, if Flynn tanks, then we still have Colt.  win/win.

  • Tad

We hear this chant of “We have to have a QB first, it’s the most important piece!”

When you are building a house, do you put up the roof first? or the foundation? The O-line is the foundation, not the QB!

If the QB is so important, how does Pittsburg still win with Charlie freakin’ Batch back there?

So please, give it some time. Look at what Detroit did last year in Millen’s third year behind the wheel? This season will be Holmgren’s third, let’s see how they do before we get out the torches and pitchforks.

If we go 4-12 again though, I’ll be on the street, pitchfork in hand…

  • Mom

I would trade up for RGIII. Franchise QB? I think so. Let’s see how the workouts go, but I go get him at two, by trading the 4 and 22. That’s what it will take. Dude looks like a game changer to me. Pick up Jackson as a FR. Draft a rb in the second or third rd. take a right tackle in the second or third.

  • Zack16

But Schaub has the better overall team around him, put him in here and I doubt that he puts up the same numbers.

  • BrownieBob

The team that caught the pass won the Super Bowl…period….Welker catches the pass and New England wins…..Manningham doesnt catch the pass and NY loses….geez  when will everyone learn that running backs make no difference….besides that almost NONE of them can play a full season….QB’s do…..I dont care how or where we get one but trust me until we get a franchise QB we will always be dogshit…( pardon the pun )….We have 3 picks in the top 37 picks…..we can coninue to upgrade the talent and we will, but we will not be a legit contender or playoff team with a top notch QB….BTW…does anyone else sorta like that Orlovsky kid from Indy??

  • Anonymous

of course not.  but put Colt in Houston and he puts up better numbers.  it’s a 2way street.  we don’t have those skill-makers (yet) so we need to get whoever the FO sees as the best option to build around.  that’s all.

  • Anthony K

Please, don’t draft another quarterback. Look at how that’s worked for us in the past. Is RG3 a sure thing? Does a sure thing for a Browns quarterback even exist anymore?

Look at the talent around Colt this year. We easily lead the league in drops. Give him half of those completed…we’re looking at a spike in completion %, yards, maybe another td or two, and probably another win or two. Sure, a lot of you think that Colt’s worthless. I can’t even say that he’s the answer…but add another weapon or two (Laurent Robinson, Danny Amendola, Garcon?), add the other half of the offensive line that we had girl scouts playing last year…and I don’t think he’s a bad quarterback. He was a winner in Texas, and he got thrown into a totally different system without a preseason, of course he wasn’t Tom Brady. But look at his numbers, hold them up to Flacco’s until the concussion…pretty similar.

I don’t want to draft another quarterback. We have so many needs, I think it would be just throwing another one under the bus. Let’s draft the best available player, and fill one of the many holes on this team (secondary, linebacker, receiver, running back?, o-line, d-line). Give Colt another year, maybe take a shot on Flynn (who I think is going to be great in the system that we have), and if Colt doesn’t pan out this year, then look into taking a shot on a quarterback next year.

  • Galena

The most experienced and proven QB with a strong arm to negotiate the cold and wind in Cleveland is Jason Campbell.

  • Guest

Campbell has proven not be an efficient QB.

  • Guest

Colt is not the answer so yes we need another QB until we get it right.

That is a fact. Period, end of discussion.
