While We’re Waiting… Getting to Know Randy Lerner, Irving 4th Best Rookie and Buckeye Scholarships
February 2, 2012Urban Meyer Lands the #3 Recruiting Class in the Country on National Signing Day
February 2, 2012Veteran NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb has been in the news and some around the league feel that his next suitor could be the Cleveland Browns.
WKNR 850AM mid-morning radio host Tony Rizzo tweeted live from Indianapolis that three separate sources have linked the former Philadelphia Eagle quarterback to three of his former superiors in general manager Tom Heckert, current Browns head coach Pat Shurmur and recently-hired offensive coordinator Brad Childress.
In a recent interview at the Super Bowl’s radio row, McNabb went on record to say that he endorsed the Browns’ addition of Childress and, while mentioning current Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, that he and Shurmur will “do a great job together.”
In an inteview with Super Bowl Live on the NFL Network this past Wednesday, McNabb stated that he has three teams wherein he could “add a little flavor” if there was mutual interest. Given that the Browns continue to be among the handful of teams that have yet to commit to their quarterback for the long term, there will continue to be a mosaic theory which will place any available quarterback into the Cleveland-based rumor mill until a final decision is made.
McNabb, 35, was selected second-overall in 1999. The Browns selected quarterback Tim Couch with the first pick that very year.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no! No more Holmgren-tree cronies. No more retirement plans for his unproven/over-the-hill/failed former friends/associates. This move doesn’t help the Browns move forward AT ALL. We are not a better team three years from now with McNabb at quarterback. It’s a stop-gap, short-term solution to a systemic problem. If anything, it sets us back a few years. I’m starting to feel bad for Joe Thomas…well…as bad as you can feel for a millionaire athlete.
…assuming this is true, of course.
No thank you.
yuck.
Where are we as a team where Donovan McNabb is thought of as an improvement at the quarterback position? Haha, oh man…this team.
I’ve always liked McNabb, but it was pretty clear he was just about done before he even left the Eagles. He’s not a club house guy, so he’s not mentoring/backing up McCoy (see:
add a little flavor).
so, no
I will assume that this rumor is merely an assist from his old friends to try to get his name out there to land somewhere else. Because I do not want to think it has any validity in it.
Of course he is interested in the Browns. That guy will play anywhere given the opportunity.
I’m OK with this under two conditions:
1) we pay him next to nothing, and
2) It is clearly understood that a large part of his job here will be to mentor McCoy/whoever else we bring in to compete for the starting job. He had a lot of success under Childress/Shurmur in Philly, and he could be valuable as a teacher of “the system”.
It he’s not willing to come here under those terms, forget about it.
Wishful thinking. If you don’t believe these good ole’ boys wouldn’t hire another one of their own who is so far over the hill that he can just barely make it out in the distance behind him, then you’re drinking too much…oh, the hell with it. You get the idea.
Exactly. The dude would play for the Frankfurt Galaxy if they’d have him.
EDIT: And yes, I realize they no longer exist.
No.
what’s with the pitchforks. He’d just be replacing Seneca, and we’re still going to have another guy. If we don’t draft a qb in the first or second rounds he’d be second string. He couldn’t lose more games than Seneca did last year and presumably they’d only sign him if he understands that role. Breathe, everybody. More about dumping Seneca than crowning a has-been as team leader.

they already have “one of their own” as the backup QB and Colt is “one of their own” as the starter since they drafted him. So, they would have to kick “one of their own” to the curb to make room for McNabb.
and, what personnel moves has Heckert made for “far over the hill” ex-players of Holmgren or himself?

yeah my first thought was a mentor to RG3 granted we even draft him.
I understand that Holmgren’s wife will be the FIRST Browns cheerleader!
he could if we needed him for more games 🙂
I think the groans and pitchforks are due to him washing out quickly in Washington and Minnesota combined with the fact that most people are hoping Colt is the QB2 next season. So, if we sign McNabb is that signalling we are giving Colt one more year? He should at least be a good backup for longer than McNabb can be, so we wouldn’t dump him right? Would we shift one of those 2 down to the QB3 role?
again, it’s likely just media blather trying to connect dots because McNabb wants to play and we have a bunch of guys he used to play for. possibly even stemmed from our guys trying to give McNabb an assist to land somewhere.
McNabb would be a good QB to mentor RGIII.
I would say bring him in for competition for Mccoy but by no means hand him the reigns to the offense. He could be a good mentor if he is willing to accept that from the start and be a positive influence on the cheap. If not then I say no. Gotta love the silly season!
No matter who u put under center is going to have problems with this team if its Mcnabb, McCoy or anybody else . They need to work on the offense line then we can see how good or bad McCoy really is. If they pick up Mcnabb …..I will have to say ” what the hell r they thinking”
I will second this comment – regardless of RG3, if we bring in McNabb in a mentor role to McCoy to help him learn the WCO and help him grow as a quarterback, that could potentially be a huge asset to the team. After hearing the reports around wallace not giving a damn about McCoy and his growth and how much of a sharp contrast that was to the way Jake mentored him in his rookie season and how beneficial that was to Colt, I see this as a win win.
You bring in a guy that is not only experienced in the NFL as a whole, but specifically in Shurmur and Chilly’s WCO offense to support and mentor Colt. Its a win-win as well because it frees up one (or two if you believe they are considering moving up to #2 to get RG3) draft pick to get some more weapons and/or protection around Colt. Perfect chance to remove excuses and see what Colt can do. If he still isn’t cutting it, then you most likely have a high draft pick again next year that you can use on your (hopeful) franchise QB… but with the weapons and protection already at least partially in place.

Absolutely not saying I want this to happen above all else, but if it does happen under those circumstances, I could certainly get behind it.
If this happens it might just be the last straw
I would assume that McNabb is being looked at as a seatwarmer for a rookie QB. This makes it more likely that the Browns will draft Griffin, at least I hope so.
I agree with this IF McNabb accepts a role as a back up so we can dump the Seneca cancer. I just see this going horribly bad when people remember that McNabb doesn’t exactly like sitting on the bench either, and as soon as one of our young QBs (be it Colt or RGIII) struggle Donavan is going to be standing next to Shurmur with his helmet on.
It’s a disaster. If we stick with with Colt, then please find a backup who has been around the league, knows what it takes to stick around and has ABSOLUTELY NO chance to fool anyone into thinking he is a solution at QB
We don’t want Rg3.we need to stick with Colt he is going to be a really good qb with good talent around him. Don’t give up on qb so fast
There’s a reason Colt fell to the 3rd round… I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
NO.
Is Ryan Mallet available?
If he’s coming in to back up and mentor Robert Griffin, i’m all for it. He would be an excellent mentor for RG3.
this is hilarious. Please someone tell me they remember reading my comment about when childress was hired that all of a sudden donavan mcnabb would be “getting back in shape” and would be linked to the browns. If Randy Lerner allows this to happen this would have to be the straw that breaks the camels back for us. This guy is fat,out of shape, and has no desire to work hard. So thanks once again for turning the reigns over to someone who was run out of town for pete carroll in seattle. This is what holmgren is bringing to the table. Well done holmgren for collecting a check and taking the easiest and laziest way to run a franchise. Come down out of your president’s office and coach because coaching is obviously the only thing you are good at. If someone on the browns does not come out and say that we don’t want mcnabb soon I’m going to throw up.
I hope so.
The Browns will trade down this draft, take Kevin Knob and pay on his giant contract, because he also has ties to Holmgren….Keep it all in the family, baby and the Browns fans will be the ones crying yet for another season !
That has to be the most idiotic statement… So there is a reason Pretty Boy Brady Fell to the 6th Round or Matt Hasselbeck to the 5th or Joe Montana to the 4th I think.

I could care less if he came here , but, I do think he could walk on the field and immediately move the offense better than Colt does – even with our total lack of weapons.

Unless his a backups a young talent…

Great. We finally got our new franchise QB… 13 years late
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
They do that and I swear I will NOT watch them anymore! McNabb Sucks!!
Please no.
Draft Trent Richardson first round and then a receiver with 2nd pick first round maybe the guy from South Carolina! Sorry his name slipping my mind at the moment but I agree unless you are gonna draft RG3 and trade McCoy the signing of McNabb makes no sense!
Please no, a hundred times no! He has not been a functional QB for a long time and he does not have the right “team mentality” to improve the attitude in the clubhouse at Cleveland.
Please God, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I can’t see this helping the Browns and I hope it isn’t true/going to happen.
….and the “flavor” that he would add would be the same bad taste he left in Philly fans mouths!
If the goal is to make our QB situation even worse, then this would surely help. McNabb could serve as a perfect reverse barometer for a rookie QB eager to learn what no to do. May as well bring back Couch while we’re at it just so we could brag about having #1 and 2 from the 99 draft.
Tony Rizzo still has a radio show???
