NFL Rumors: Browns Not in Play for Mario Williams
March 8, 2012While We’re Waiting… Tons-o-love for Kyrie Irving, trading Sessions, and appreciating Manning
March 9, 2012“I really like [Brandon Weeden]. I really like him a lot, and we’re actually gonna see him [Friday at his pro day]. That’s the million-dollar question. You go, ‘Wow, he’s 28 years old.’ But I don’t know. If he can play six years, I might not be here, so who cares? If he can play, he can play. […] He’s mature, and he’s telling you it’s a positive. And it is. He’s been through a lot.”
– Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert, Thursday, in a press conference with local media wherein recording-for-replay devices were prohibited, with regard to the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft.

Stupid, kool-aid drinking fans!!!
I just can’t wait until this organization is run out of town with their tails between their legs and you true believers will have to rationalize it and admit you were wrong. It’ll be the day of days for everyone who sees their the veneer of b.s. that this group throws us.
Don’t fret, I won’t even be mean. I’ll just say “See you Wednesday.”
Another point: did anyone ever say everything they have done is wrong? Signing D’Quell was a perfect move, well done. Keeping Dawson as well. Even they aren’t dumb enough to get rid of the man single-leggedly responsible for 40% (or thereabouts) of their team’s points.
huh, remembered wrong. we were in the middle of the uncapped year (bad year for the experiment, but nonetheless).
anyways, we spent the same $$$ as Pittsburgh. one of these teams spent that money better.

See, that wasn’t so hard.
And what portion of that money is going to FA vs. maturing contracts of their own guys. My money is probably not much is going toward FA outside of the skins obviously.
also, I would like to point out that spending on payrolls in the NFL is silly because ALL teams will be required to be at 90% of the cap starting in 2013. so, there will be very little difference in payrolls.
teams will have to differentiate themselves through drafting, coaching, and front office decisions (who to keep, who to let go).

Yeah, its odd how what I say tends to be true and has facts to support it.
Come on over to the dark side, Luke. We have facts.

You over pay for players that may or may not be any good once they hit the jackpot.
That’s how I read it, but even if it isn’t meant that way, who cares? It’s true and it won’t take 6 years to find out if Weeden sucks or not.
Exceptions to every rule blah blah blah.
There is no discounting the genius of the Steelers’ organization, as much as I loathe them. I have to admit, they do more with less than maybe any other team in the NFL.
They are spending more now, I think, and that is why they had to cut some people, but man, they can find diamonds in the rough (Big Ben, i.e.) like no other.
THE POINT is, the the tendency for teams who spend more is that they win more. Why I needed to go through all this work to prove that to anyone is beyond me.
Don’t fret, my pet; the Browns will find a way to overspend for someone that will keep them RIGHT at the line they need to be at while not improving the team.
I love how the NFL is forcing teams to be competitive. Even Goodell knows its bad for the league to have a bunch of Cleveland Browns.
we have been right in the middle of teams for spending? we have drafted terribly under past regimes. some of us think Heckert is drafting better. how is that so hard?
The guy just had major heart surgery. After that I wouldn’t be looking six years ahead either. That being said, analyzing all the QB’s in this draft is a waste. We need only figure out if RG3 is the real deal or not. All other QB’s available in this draft are a hope and a prayer, and talk of them should be nothing more than a smoke screen.
other facts: 4 of 5 top spending teams had losing records. 2 of 5 bottom spending teams had losing records. and again, spending means nothing in the NFL anymore as everyone will be about the same going forward.
Ugh you’re both wrong, you can’t just look at 1 year’s spending, how was the team going into that year? What are the long term affects of being able to retain your own players? Pittsburgh may have spent as much as us, but they also probably had more payroll tied up in the their veterans whereas we have a bunch of youngsters. They’re cutting and restructuring and will be lucky to have enough to sign their own draft picks and retain Mike Wallace, we still have loads of flexibility.
You’re “facts” didn’t support anything other than good teams can add players in FA and get better and bad teams that spend money in FA don’t get better.
I dunno if I am just a ridiculous optimist or something, but I read him saying “who cares about 6 years down the road, we need people who can play now.” Isn’t this what you expect a GM to say? Anyone expect him to say: “Oh yea, we’re on the 6 year plan so don’t buy your season tickets until then”. To be honest I kinda like it, he knows we aren’t going to the Super Bowl next year, he knows we are a couple years from contention, but the guy wants guys who can play.
Careful Darth Vader.
I didn’t say I agree with your facts supporting the argument you are trying to make, just that it is easier to have a discussion with them versus everyone “feeling” or “betting” on something.
I do agree here in that the smartest move to be made by this team is to continue to give yourself cap space and improve draft quality in ALL rounds.
So far Heckert is doing that but this year’s draft does seem to be the one to make the most impactful yet as the sense of the fanbase is leaning towards “why do I renew my season tickets again?”
You could add to that list the lockups of Joe Thomas and Chris Gocong. Both being forseeable assests to the team.
As a Browns fan why would I want anyone associated with the team to fail? What value is there in that to me?
i agree. and this being the uncapped year makes it worse.
Agree on Thomas, disagree on Gocong. We overpaid for Gocong.
I want our TEAM to succeed. These guys are not the TEAM, they are the ownership and they have gone awry.
I do not believe they will succeed under this ownership. So, I want them gone. The right coach can do wonders; see the 49ers.
The man just had heart surgery, he literally might not be here in 6 years. Who knows exactly what he meant ?
Well, of course you don’t agree. I didn’t expect you to. But, it will be interesting to see your response as well when these idiots go 4,5-whatever next season.
No different response that what was already stated by mgbode and Henry Brown. There are more variables to the monetary numbers you provided than a simple “see, they spent a lot, therefore they won”.
PS – I am already as disengaged with this team as it gets, but I am past the point of “LOUD WORDS AND UPHEAVEL”, I have been very apathetic to the Browns for quite some time. Truth be told they are my fourth team in the area behind the Tribe, Buckeyesand Cavaliers. I have commented before on my disbelief at the blind faith this city has shown the franchise while the Indians put up the most consistent chance at a championship over the past decade and recieve a quarter of the city’s interest. But one comment on the negative situation is good for me. I’ll gladly sit back and watch from the comfort of my home until they can prove to earn my dollar back to the stadium.
Obviously I start with 2 open laptops. That way can act smugly and much easier than messing with the space/time continuum.
Your GD point is absurd. The 2010-2011 season was the famous “uncapped” year. Look at those numbers, the salary cap is something like 120-130 mil, all of those teams had to scramble to get back down under that number this past offseason. Only 2 of them revisted the playoffs in 2011-12. So yes you are right that if the NFL had no salary cap like baseball teams spending the most would have an advantage over others. Let me know when the next uncapped season begins so you can be right for the second time.
That brings up a great point.
When Holmgren was talking about how it took six years to get to a SB in Seattle, people were hounding him over it. Here we have the opposite: a front office person saying that he’s concerned with winning now. And people are hounding him over it.
how does locking up Cribbs not get a mention? pay-da-man! respect that is 🙂
wait, what? I already bought my tickets to New Orleans! what ever am I supposed to do the 2nd week of February in New Orleans now?

Comparative to the recent contract of Patrick Willis I could lean on the side of “overpayment” to Chris.
That’s not to say it was not a good move to lock up a strong OLB for the team however.
Mardi Gras? 🙂
I would love to see Uncle Craig defend this one.
Exactly, people talk about how bad the Browns are with the press. This looks pretty polished to me. Your president preaches patience and the “slow building process” while your GM emphatically says he wants guys who can play now.
Behind the scenes Heckert knows we aren’t going to win now, but he knows it’s the president’s job to manage those expectations. It’s his job to get people excited about making this team better.
I don’t understand the logic then of not going after Peyton Manning then if your days are numbered. You also just broadcasted to move up one spot ahead of the browns 2nd round pick to if you want him if cleveland does not get RG3. I’m just glad they are talking qb but I hope they like Brock Osweiler and are throwing up distractions or something. I don’t need to hear who Cleveland likes before the draft just go after Peyton sign Reggie Wayne and draft Justin Blackmon and draft lamichael james in the 2nd round and sign a right tackle and we will win the superbowl next year.
ok, but if anyone asks, I’m just there for the Superbowl 🙂
So … you want Heckert to fail, but you will root for the players that Heckert selects for the team.
But the only way Heckert will be “run out of town” is if the players he selects for the team fail.
So you are rooting for the players to fail.
That’s some kind of fan.
