MLB News: Indians acquire Jairo Asencio from Braves for cash

The Cleveland Indians have acquired a reliever from the Atlanta Braves organization for cash. According to Lindsey Foltin from 92.3 the Fan, Asencio led the International League in saves for Gwinnett in 2009 and 2011.

Asencio was battling Yahan Flande for the final spot in the Braves’ bullpen and apparently lost the battle as he is headed to Cleveland.

We’ll see what this means for the Tribe bullpen. It could be a concern of the team related to closer Chris Perez’ health or it could just represent an opportunity to bolster the pen overall. We’ll see shortly as the Indians will presumably have to make a move to make room on the roster.

I’ll take it.  He probably won’t be a factor, but there is very little risk.

On the other hand, I did read this:  “Asencio spent the 2010 season on the restricted list with visa problems in the Dominican Republic.”  He’ll fit right in!

    Can Asencio play left field?

Maybe this is a move that is a precursor to Jason Donald + Reliever to the Phillies for Dominic Brown.

There has to be a move like the above coming soon.  The Indians cannot go through the first 3 months of the season with Duncan in left field.

you apparently have blocked the Austin Kearns experience from your memory banks

I was thinking (hoping?) that one of the other relievers is being used in a trade for a LF.

    How much cash?

    $1 Billion Dollars

for that money, we could have bought 1/2 of the Dodgers.

looking at their roster that means we could have had Kemp and the other 1/2 owner could have Kershaw.

Looking back now, it is pretty interesting with Chase Utley’s injury woes the last two years that the Phillies would have loved to have JD waiting in their farm system/on their bench and we could really use a young OF with potential….not sure I see it working out that way, but I’m not sure either team would object to a re-do.

He averaged 11.5 strikeouts per 9 innings last season in AAA, could be a nice pickup.

Tribe really needs hitters, not pitchers.

do we need to call him by his “Fausto Carmona” name, Luis Valdez?
