March 9, 2012Jay Glazer is reporting via his twitter that the RG3 sweepstakes is over. After reportedly missing out on Peyton Manning, Dan Snyder and the Redskins have apparently ended any kind of bidding war that might have been taking place or looming.
Major scoopage: Redskins have agreed to a trade w Rams for #2 pick of draft. Rams and Skins swap first rounders this yr w Rams also getting 2 future #1s and additional picks.
I said on Facebook yesterday that if the Browns didn’t get Robert Griffin III that I will have wasted a large amount of time and words on the topic. Well, it seems that has come to pass.
If true, it will be interesting to see if the Browns ramp up efforts to acquire Matt Flynn or choose to stand pat with Colt McCoy and whoever might be available in the upcoming draft to play quarterback. While I bemoan the potential loss of a major prospect, it appears that maybe the Redskins offer was just a little bit too far on the side of crazy for me to be upset at the Browns.
In my mind, if this is true, we can legitimately start talking about the benefits of trading down.

Ya I’m not too upset about this, RGIII would have been nice, but not for 3 first round picks and a second rounder when we have so many holes everywhere else. That would have set us back a few years for sure
Thank God…I read the Browns are set to grab Flynn
Not upset either. Now lets swap first round picks with St Louis for their 2nd rounder so they can take Blackmon.
Now maybe the Browns swap picks with the Rams, pick up an extra 2nd or something and it works out in the end for the Browns.
Not upset about this at all seeing how much the Redskins gave up. Rams made out on this one.
Pathetic….
Well let’s hope this means we can add at least two big time playmakers with the two first round picks. That price did end up being rather high. Still need a big upgrade at quarterback though.
Or we could just take Blackmon and actually get a playmaker
Oh and the browns were going to do the same deal but were late. This speaks about the front office
Yeah this positive attitude crap is why this team has been sorry since 99. They better hope they make the right picks now.
Where did you hear that?
Rarely does drafting a franchise QB set a team back. So IF RGIII is one, then the Redskins (or the Browns if they made this trade) will be just fine. While thats a big IF, that’s what GMs get paid to predict so we shall see if Heckerts reluctance to trade up was a good idea.
I had no idea that they were going to get this much. I don’t feel bad no matter what happens now because I am hearing that Cleveland was offering the 3 1st rounders to get him. I don’t think it would have been smart to do this because Cam Newton did something that no rookie has ever done so it’s not as easy as Washington thinks to draft this guy and get this kind of production. Hopefully our spot is the hot pick to trade now because people are giving up so much to get specific players now that hopefully we can do another julio jones deal again and stock up some players. With this happening so early make a run at Peyton.
Espn.com report and Adam shefter
For a team with so many holes,it doesn’t make sense to gamble the farm and offer 3 first round picks+ for one over hyped QB. I like the way Heckert played it. It was too early to get into a bidding war. Snyder did what everyone expected and went all in on the first hand. I hope it works out for the skins. If it doesn’t, its a 5 year setback for them.
I am reading that Cleveland was offering the 3 1st rounders as well.
Ok cool did not see that thanks!
I’m betting Flynn goes to Miami unless Manning signs there. Who’s saying he’s on the Browns radar?
But if it does work then they (the Skins) are set at QB. At some point, not saying it had to be now with RGIII, Heckert will most likely have to take a risk at the top of the draft with a QB.
They offered the same deal, but they were late. Read espn.com
Plus, we don’t have a Steve Smith for him to throw to.
How could they be late Bill? The trade cant become official till tuesday. That makes no sense.
Drafting a franchise QB does not set a team back. Giving up 2 #1 picks does set teams back.
Don’t worry, if ever there was a team to botch this move and prevent RGIII from becoming successful it is these Washington Redskins.
Just read the article – report says its not clear if the Browns actually offered the second rounder in addition to the 3 firsts.
Because as we all know, the Boo-Yahs are always 100% right about Cleveland sports news … I don’t buy that story for a second.
What I find interesting:
According to the ESPN report both Browns and Skins offered 3 first round picks – although our three would not have impacted out future as much since two are this year and one is an extra from the Falcons. What is interesting is that it was an extra second rounder the Skins threw in. Is keeping that second founder really that important?? I mean since it seems Heckert was already willing to trade 3 first rounders according to the report.
If the reports of the Browns offering 3 #1 picks are true, that would seem to go against Tom Heckert’s draft strategy. Maybe that means we can’t believe anything he says and they actually will try to make some legitimate moves in Free Agency.
Wishful thinking, I suppose. Let’s hope he can work his magic with the picks the Browns are now keeping.
Good, if true — and I seriously doubt if it is. Three 1s is insane unless RGIII is the second coming of Tom Brady and Joe Montana combined. Given how poorly Dan Snyder has run the ‘Skins, you should be feeling pity for RGIII, not bemoaning Holmgren acting sane. After all, how many rings does Danny Boy have?
Now go grab whoever the Vikings refuse to draft — and that includes Kalil. I’ll take an OL that nobody in the league will be able to touch for at least the next 5 years as a foundation for this franchise any damn time.
Schaefer is reporting that as well as the report. Think what you want but that’s what multiple outlets are saying. That’s how it make sense.
There is no reason to turn down a better offer from the Browns so the report can’t be true likely we were just driving the price up for Washington.
So what if it doesn’t become official till Tuesday. That doesn’t matter. Shefter is backing the report. Him and glazer are more correct than anyone on this. Believe what you want
the redskins threw in the 2nd rounder and I think the Browns weren’t.
Maybe Heckert drove this price up to ridiculous levels because his intention is to trade out of the #4 pick this whole time. By driving this up we can get another #1 pick from some team moving up to get their player and he played the Redskins. He is not stupid and he knows how many holes they are to fill. I’m hoping that was his intention. And I agree with someone talking about Dan Snyder going all in. He is not smart with his decision making and he went way too high for this pick.
So proud of the Browns for NOT doing this deal, for as much as the Redskins paid anyway. I’m now completely down with taking Claiborne at #4 and S. Hill at #22 and grabbing an RT at #37. I would expect the Browns to get serious about signing Flynn or maybe drafting Weeden in Rd 2. The fact that Heckart offered a reported large amount of picks to Washington shows the aren’t committed to McCoy. I can’t get over the smokescreen that the front office has created this offseason. I don’t think anyone has a clue what their plans are, but I’m excited to see the results. Go Browns!
That’s why I don’t buy the ESPN report. Two 1s this year and two picks higher this year is a better deal than three future 1s from a team you should presume will be on the rise — even with the 2 thrown in. St. Louis could have gotten better faster if the reports of the Browns picks were truly on the table. And being “late” with the counteroffer? BS. A deal’s not a deal until two sides say there’s a deal.
I think Shanahan’s all hype anyway — he ‘won’ after Elway established himself. Who has he really developed? And how are the ‘Skins gonna find anyone to surround RGIII with now that there’s a cap? Name me an NFL team that’s built through free agency.
Glad the Browns didn’t pay that price. Go from here.
Good. Now lets go get Flynn and keep our picks, or trade down and pick up a couple more.
They had to make the right picks no matter what, including if they’d gone with RG3. Did I miss his Hall of Fame induction ceremony?
I think many had a gut feeling this was going to happen. Redskins and Snyder have a history of grand, overstated and overpaid players. 7YR/$100M on Hainsworth, 5YR/$78 on McNabb. Browns would be in play, but never for that bounty.
and a 2nd.
Who can tell me Flynn is any better than Colt McCoy? Spend elsewhere.
I have no idea whether or not RG3 will turn out to be an elite quarterback, but at some point Holmgren & Heckert have to decide what they want to do at the most important position on the field and commit to it. If Colt is the guy, build a team around him. If it’s Flynn, sign him. If you like RG3, go and pay the price it takes to trade up to get him. These guys are entering their third draft, it’s time they decided what they want to do.
It seems to me there are only three possibilities:
1. They don’t think RG3 is going to be an elite QB.
2. They don’t think you need an elite QB to win in the NFL.
3. They think they’re going to be drafting high enough next year to be able to get an elite QB in 2013.
If it’s #1 and they’re right, more power to them. If it’s #2, I have a problem with that. And if it’s #3, boy, do I have a real problem with that.
How do you get outbid six weeks before the auction ends?
So now that #1 and #2 are set in stone, I’d look for the Vikings to trade out of their pick as they’ve said all along they wanted out of #3. Could honestly see the Rams using one of their 2nd rounders to go back up and grab Blackmon to give Bradford a legit target.
What a haul for the Rams. Well played. Interested to see if we were really all in for this deal or if we were just mildly interested and never planned on actually following through on the price he went for. The forementioned implies more front office incompetence. The latter shows some patience and strategy.
And which of these two options is most consistent with past Browns’ front office practice?
ESPN is reporting that the Browns offered 3 fist round picks as well, but also that Washington had the best offer on the table. The Browns first round picks would have been a better deal then Washington’s 3 + 1 2nd round pick. The Browns pick sooner, and could have offered 2 picks this year, and its always better to get paid earlier than later.
My guess, The Browns held on to their #4 overall pick in their offer. Instead, they offered Atlanta’s pick at #22, plus first round picks for the following 2 years. A draft featuring RGIII plus Kalil or Blackmon would have gotten Browns fans excited and given them more chances to “hit” with a high draft pick.
how many quarterbacks come in and turn a franchise around after one year? i will give you a list… rodgers, brady, p. manning, brees. past that you have a group that needs playmakers around them for them to succeed. eli, big ben, rivers. so you have 7 quarterbacks that are better than RG3 will ever be. oh and andrew luck (the number one pick). Sam Bradford and Matt Stafford will be better (if they can stay healthy). So 4 Picks = to a top 15 quarterback. good job Washington you are fucked for 10 years.
Heckert is just such a good drafter… I wouldn’t want to take that many picks away from him. If we can keep getting Wards, Hadens, Taylors and Sheards with our first and second rounders… give me us many of those as we can get
1. They don’t think RG3 is going to be an elite QB.
Offering 3 1st round picks doesn’t say that at all..
If the deal comes out as reported this is more a “win” for the Rams than a “fail” by the Browns.
St. Louis was able to announce to everyone they were not drafting a QB with the No. 2 pick and despite everyone knowing that they were able to create a market for that pick by hoping there would be a team dumb enough to mortgage their future to move up and they found them in the Redskins, the kings of doing stupid things in the off-season that don’t pay off when the games actually count.
And there is zero chance the Rams would turn down the exact same deal from the Browns; it’s more likely the Browns tried to sell the Rams on a different deal but the Rams took the Washington deal banking on the fact that the Redskins are dysfunctional and their future picks on going to be higher than where the Browns will be selecting.
If there’s at least one team we can count on to make bigger [bleep]-ups than the Browns its the Redskins.
Thank you Snyder for saving the Browns from themselves this draft.
This would make the most sense, and of all the talk after the Apocalypse of not getting Griff this is now, how I hope the draft shakes out. With Blackmon running a 4.4 yesterday, if Minni takes Kalil then hopefully someone other than us falls in love with Blackmon.
