Report: Fausto Carmona / Roberto Hernandez gets charges dropped

The long nightmare that has been Robert Hernandez’ life over the last few months might be over. According to an ESPN report, the former Mr. Carmona has struck a deal.

Dominican Republic prosecutors say Cleveland Indians pitcher Roberto Hernandez has agreed to a deal to have false identity charges against him dropped in return for completing a work program in his Caribbean homeland.

What remains to be seen is exactly when that means Roberto Hernandez will be available to rejoin the Cleveland Indians. Still, this has got to be considered the first good news of the year for the Indians with regard to their one-time Cy Young vote getter.

Just because he is getting a deal in the DR, I can’t imagine this is something that Homeland Security/Customs would just let go. Still think it would be a stretch to see him stateside anytime in the near future.

Dolan just sprayed his dinner wine all over the tableclothe. Here’s an idea, Larry: send Samardo Samuels to keep track of his passport. That should defer some payroll for a while.

A Dolan is cheap joke! How original and clever!

  • Kai

    …and accurate!

  • Harv 21

nope, that’s not a cheap joke, that’s a Dolan Can’t Afford To Own Team joke. Not about moral failings, just business failings that affect my fandom. I also mocked Modell’s ability to do the seemingly impossible business feat of somehow losing enough money, despite the NFL’s revenue sharing, that he had to move the team just in order to keep it. Are Modell jokes original and clever enough to pass muster?

A biting/negative comment from Steve?  How original and clever!

  • Vindictive_Pat

Craig, you left out the part where Fausto Hernandez bribes the Dominican government with boatloads of cash.

  • Garry_Owen

While Roberto Hernandez had the charges dropped, Fausto Carmona is still facing them.  They’re going to release Hernandez, but keep Carmona in custody.  It’s a weird quirk in Dominican law.  So, we get Hernandez, but not Carmona.  Unfortunately, Hernandez has never pitched a day in his life.

  • Garry_Owen

That’s not called a bribe in the DR.  It’s called “civil procedure.”

    /esoteric law school joke

  • Sean O’Gorman

that might actually be good news.

  • Vindictive_Pat

    Nice!

I hate to break this to you, but no one can afford to run a MLB team the way you see fit when they’re in a small market that will only top out at 9th in the league in attendance when the team plays well.

If your fandom is determined by economic arrangments, then I’m not sure you were much of a fan to begin with.

  • Harv 21

I see. It’s all market size. The fans in Detroit, Minnesota, St. Louis, etc. might disagree.

Look, no one doubts the inequities. But if you don’t have what it takes to attempt to compete in the market as it is, don’t play. The Dolans seem swell. They just have no business owning a MLB team. And if being “much of a fan” to you means not wishing we had owners with deeper pockets, yeah, I’m not much of one. Wasn’t much of one sitting countless times in the old cold stadium in April or in September when we were dozens of games out, not one now dropping bucks at games or watching on tv. Whatevs.
