Report: Indians restructure contract for Roberto Hernandez (Carmona)

According to Jon Heyman of CBS sports, the Cleveland Indians have restructured the contract of Roberto Hernandez (Fausto Carmona)-

“Sources: fausto carmona (heredia) contract has been restrcutured/reduced. 2012 salary was lowered and 1 option eliminated”

“Carmona (heredia) was to make $7M in 2012. Now far less than that. #indians have no comment on situation.”

So, assuming Hernandez is able to come back to the States, he will apparently be playing for less.

“Sooo sorry you had a rough winter, Roberto. Yep, for us too, ‘cuz we thought you were 28. What? Cash flow’s a little tight? Shhh, just sign here. No, sign first, and then we’ll let go of the short hairs.”

That might pay for another try at that Winter Fest thing that they do.

I think the sports reporters in general have been far too lenient on these latino players lying about their age. The story breaks, but there is never any outrage that this is occurring. Personally I find it appalling and I think that these players (i.e. Nunez, Carmona) should have their contracts voided and they should be banned from baseball.

  • Garry_Owen

Really?  These guys do this when they’re kids – like 15, 16 – under advisement from people they unwittingly trust – probably MLB scouts.  Banned from baseball?

  • mgbode

no outrage because put in the same situation 95% of us would do the same thing.

option1:  too old for MLB scouts to bother with, continue to live life in squalor with no hope of pulling family out of it.

option2:  borrow 2-3yr younger cousin’s name and MLB scouts will at least give you a look.  if that works, then you get more money on your first contract than you would in 20yrs (even if you bust in the minors).  if you make it to MLB, then look-out.

If only we had known about all this extra money that’s suddenly available a few months ago… Could’ve signed Pujols…

  • EyesAbove

Agreed, anybody who says they wouldnt do the same thing in his shoes is lying.

  • Pjerome79

he’s only getting 7million stupid. not unough to get him…..uh da

  • Pjerome79

talkin to you tim about pujols

You do realize that these players are committing fraud and intentionally misrepresenting their age? I don’t think that’s something that should be so easily passed off as “part of the business.” And if you want to get rid of it, you have to make it a punishable offense.

  • DMohio

    /sarcasm.

  • DMohio

Also, he is still going to make his money and take the risk of getting caught, so there is still that incentive for players to lie. My main point is that once they’re caught there should be consequences to their actions, not a simple slap on the wrist, 2-3 weeks of jokes, and a changed name on the roster. It’s a joke

  • mgbode

He absolutely should be punished.  No doubt.  That’s part of the downside to illegal action that he took.  But, just because I think he should be punished and what he did was wrong does not mean that I do not understandy why he did it.  And, it is that understanding that quells any possible “outrage.”

  • Richard Millman

A victim-less “crime” here fans. Does anyone really care what Fausto/Roberto had to do—or did do—given his personal circumstances growing up? I mean..who is this “crime” adversely impacting? If, as some of you say, what he did is “against the law,” then I say, to quote Dickens, “the law is an ass!”
